Some select notes from LNH Insights on Nate Mason (full article here):

LateNightHoops.com said:
Nate used more possessions for CP3 than anyone not named Theo Pinson. His 23.6% usage rate for a very good team projects well for the future, although more so as a scorer than a distributor (~27% %Shots – highest on CP3).

As things currently stand, Nate would walk into a great situation next fall. With two senior point guards in Dre Hollins and Dre Mathieu, Nate could be taught the ropes and brought in with ease as a freshman. However, if he’s ready to make an impact immediately and earns playing time, Dre Hollins and he can certainly be on the court together.

Assist rates for some other point guards Minnesota has been involved with: Lourawls Nairn 45.5%, Tyler Ulis 42.4%, Tyus Jones 41.9%, Alex Robinson 38.0%.

The question is what can Mason do in college and the answer is better than 20.4%. That said, we’re not overly concerned with his assist rate this summer. We’re far more impressed by his low turnover rate of just 11.6%. (Turnover rates of those four guards mentioned in the bullet above: 19.1%, 16.2%, 15.0%, 24.5%.)

Go Gophers!!

Anyone have any insight on actual height/weight?

According to Scout.com Mason picked Minnesota over Virginia and Kansas State. Mason’s a native of Georgia, but he currently attends Montrose Christian Academy in Maryland. Last season as a junior at Shiloh HS in Snellville, Ga., Mason helped lead the team to a 23-8 record and his ability to put points on the board has led to some comparing him to former College of Charleston guard Andrew Goudelock.

With Minnesota losing Maverick Ahanmisi, Austin Hollins and FIU transfer Malik Smith at the end of the 2013-14 season, Mason’s ability to make things happen will be a welcome addition to the program. And with forward Reid Travis taking his official visit to Minnesota this weekend, Golden Gopher fans are hoping for more good news on the recruiting trail this weekend.

Excellent pick up at a position of need. Welcome Nate!

left montrose a few days ago for his 3rd or 4th high school. He can score in many ways and is a tremendous defender.

Mason is ranked 126th on 247 while Lachance is only ranked 147 on rivals so not a bad pickup

Appears compfortable driving and finishing with either hand.

One glaring weakness that I noticed. I am sure that working w/ Dre and he can improve on it. SMILE (or at least grin).

I LOVE how calm he looked after making a big play. Seemed to use the Barry Sanders approach: "act like you've been there before."

in viewing his video, it seems to me his release point is too low right now. going to have to raise that up to have any chance against strong defenders, especially at 5'11". also, don't really care for his demeanor on the court in this video. he's no austin or dre hollins in that regard. hope i'm 100% wrong!!

247 and Scout have him at 6'1. Rivals and ESPN have him at 5'11. Hopefully 5'11 is outdated and he's now 6'1. Or just average them and he is 6'0, which is not bad at all for a college PG.

After watching "The Assassin" video I was concerned about his release point as well. Looking like more of a set shot than anything and a low one at that. But if you watch his 2014 video it looks a lot better, and if that's something he worked on intentionally, and it looks like it is, that's not only a huge improvement but a great sign to think about how coachable he is and how much better he has the potential to get down the line.

As far as his demeanor on the court I think that's my favorite thing about him. Kevin Durant was always the same way too. (note: this is not calling him Kevin Durant, in any way).

What are we gonna do if we get Jarvis?

He is no Jarvis Johnson. He may get pushed to the 2 when we sign Jarvis. There is room for both and they are different players, but I like McNeil better. McNeil is better defensively and taking the ball to the hole. Mason is a better shooter. Handles and passing didn't look all that different between the two.

Welcome to the Gopher Family Nate! I would rather have Nate Mason fill this spot rather than Riley LaChance who committed else where. He seems to fit what Coach P is looking for.

It'll be nice to have a true point guard on the team again. Nice addition!

I agree. However, if Jordan Hulls gets shots off, anyone can....

All three posts stole my answer. It's hard to see the 3-point arc in Mason's vid in this thread, but he has good range out beyond it, just like Hulls. Part of what makes Hulls' release point less of an issue is his quick trigger (like Mason) and that he shoots from the next county.

OK, now it's time for Nate to eat little Tum Tum's lunch for four years! (That sounds strange.)

Mason had offers from Kansas State, Virginia, Marquette, Clemson, La Salle, Providence, SMU, Harvard, and Lehigh among others...
Big time get for us!
