The Gophers are primed to make another big run this season and for just the purpose of depth alone, having JD on the team would be huge. Our Gophers have been mostly very fortunate with a lack of injuries in the WR corps but luck doesn't last forever. This would be a very different team without Rashod or CAB on the team, but Spielman could be huge in mitigating any such loss.
Spielman would not be there for 'depth'...
Doesn't have to be there for that purpose to make him valuable for it.
There is no doubt. Only Purdue and Ohio State would be even close in my mind.Would Spielman's presence on the team give us the #1 receiving corps in the B1G?
#1 overall receiver in Bateman + CAB, JDS, DD and tons of Depth.

He would be the slot receiver. There were few times when we didn't have 3 WR on the field, if it wasn't short yardage. He'd be the same role as Tyler Johnson was last year.This.
JDS was without a doubt going to become the ALL TIME LEADING RECEIVER AT NEBRASKA. And he never had a legit quarterback. He would be nasty good across from RB13 and catching balls from Morgan.

Do the Gophers have a scholarship, or would Spielman simply walk-on with his dad paying tuition?
It might not have just been up to him. It's also possible he is ok with the risk too as if he isn't eligible anywhere, he can just train for the draft next year.I don't understand.
I thought we already looked at this and determined that he wouldn't be eligible to play.
Why wouldn't he just stay in Nebraska and finish out his campaign rather than risk ineligibility?
Anyone here saying that he wouldn't be a valuable addition to the depth chart is off their rocker. He's very good, and would likely slot in as a #2 behind Bateman.
Yeah with all this time at home I ASSUME that JD and his family has had time to think about what to do and they're probably ready to make whatever his next jump is (play for team X, just train, etc) .... unless things are more in flux than I would otherwise imagine.JD has had a lot of time to think and plan his future as a student athlete. Are the Gophers a good fit for him and will he fit with Fleck's culture? Does PJ want him?
I would think that these questions have been already answered and we will soon know where JD ends up.
Choosing MN would likely be the easiest place for him to get a waiver.
I’d still give an edge to Purdue with Rondale, David Bell, Sparks, Anderson, Wright and Anthrop.Yeah by far #1.
It's difficult to compare, producing more stats and being more skilled do not always align when opportunities to produce differ greatly. Purdue throws it 20 more times a game.I’d still give an edge to Purdue with Rondale, David Bell, Sparks, Anderson, Wright and Anthrop.
Right. Do we have a scholarship, though?Pretty rare anyone chooses to pay.
Folks who have a lot of money didn't get it by paying when they don't have to.
By my count, not only is the answer no, but 6th year Witham actually puts us at 86.Right. Do we have a scholarship, though?
I got $18 in my wallet if that will help.Right. Do we have a scholarship, though?
Thank you for making my point in a much more concise manner.Love CAB.
Ridiculous to pick him in a “who would you rather have” with JDS.
I don't think you understand what he's saying.
Spielman would challenge for #1 reps on this roster.

He can play slot, outside, special teams, he catches out of the backfield and can spread the defense horizontally, he's a good to great route runner, and he has a nose for the ball.
If he came here, then there's a chance that he would become the #1 option even with a healthy Bateman.
Bateman has better hands and he's shiftier, I might give him a slight edge when it comes to route running, but Spielman's toolbox is something that Minnesota doesn't have right now.
