JD Spielman. RTB?

He already had a red-shirt year tho; so he needs a waiver either way.
Thanks for the reminder, forgot he redshirted. Because he can't grad transfer I just assumed he hadn't redshirted.

I'm waiting for the first qualified rumor before I get too excited, but I am antsy

People are counting chickens before they are hatched.
He may have more problems than being discontented with Frosty.

As for the waiver situation, it will be hard for the NCAA to say no to a kid who wants to be closer to home in the middle of an international health pandemic, who also has a known mental health issue. The Spielmans will hire a big time attorney and that almost always forces the NCAA to grant the waiver.
Because it's the Gophers, I would assume any NCAA ruling would go against them. However, the bolded is a very good point. Many of the kids playing NCAA sports probably can't afford an attorney. The Spielmans, on the other hand should be able to afford a very good one.

He very well may have more problems. I trust PJ more than just about anybody to make the right call. I highly doubt he would take a chance if he thought it could turn south. In the Gophers favor, he's basically only a rental for one semester. I don't know what his "issues" are, but the risk seems relatively low.

Maybe but I'd take a chance on a transfer for him.

He'd be near family, support, PJ & Co.

Media wouldn't be on him as much provided he keeps his nose clean (and as far as I know he hasn't been in any of that type of trouble).

The transfer is disappointing to Nebraska, but they got plenty of production out of him.

Agreed it's far from a slam dunk that he comes here, for multiple reasons. In my non-expert opinion I think it's much more likely he doesn't spend 2020 in a gopher uniform.

That said if he wants to play here and we can make it work compliance wise, we absolutely need to get him on the roster.

This is a good point and I think may go against the gophers honestly. I think if he wants to play anywhere in the country they would have the means to fight it until it happens. I realize there are "rules" but it hasn't stopped people from transferring, still being far from home, and still being eligible right away.

Three JD Spielman threads at one time, is that a GH record?

How do the rules work in this case? Does he have the option to sit another year and then play? If not, that pretty rules out any landing spot other than the homeland of Minnesota.

Spielman is the far superior player to CAB at this point. No disrespect to CAB as I think we all like his potential, but to think Spielman couldn't jump him on the depth chart is ridiculous.
Boy, over all I'm not sure about that...CAB is TJ clone but a bit more elusive and possessive. He will get a lot of balls thrown his way. I think JD would be a dynamic #3 and main return guy as others have posted.

This priapism feels good today. Some old Gopher blogger used to use that term all the time. I think Iaughed every time

Quite possibly. I have to imagine that JD knows exactly what is going to happen. I have a hard time believing dad would let him leave NE without a landing spot secured. If he doesn't get a waiver, he'll essentially lose a year of eligibility (assuming he doesn't return to NE) and his career would be over.

Does anybody know what kind of pro prospect he is?

If CAB is a more elusive and possessive version of TJ, then why was TJ's stat line 86/1,318/13 while CAB's was 28/371/5 last year? I think some people have a tendency to undervalue TJ and overvalue CAB. CAB is a good receiver, but TJ was elite. JDS is somewhere in between.

I would think as a return guy...so late round draft?

Well, assuming his personal mental health issues are legit, then I doubt the Spielmans are interested in having JD play at some far away location. Although a few of his Nebraska friends have ended up at Oregon State and that was a rumor. I'm not sure what the appeal to playing there would be over playing here in his hometown with his family 25 minutes from the campus.

Hopefully Speilman and CAB have 1,000 yards and for some weird reason Bateman is 3rd on the team in receiving yards. He then feels compelled to come back for his senior year and shatter all records

If JD actually comes to Minnesota, that's a lot of wide receiver talent for one team... especially considering the fact that Fleck loves to run the football.

If JD is a Gopher, I'm especially excited to see him in the return game.

If Spielman wants to transfer to Minnesota, great. IMO he is a big play guy who also happens to be extremely undisciplined and needs to mature quickly on the football field. He fumbles or mishandles punts too often for Fleck's liking. If he can become part of the culture and works his ass off he can then let his natural athleticism take over. Fleck and Morgan can truly make him great!

I can see headlines now. "With so many wide open recievers Morgan struggles to figure out which one to throw to." Or "Speilman struggles to adjust to having other recievers who can catch the ball and throws that hit him in stride."

Spielman struggles to adjust to all these catchable passes / the QB isn't trying to murder him with throws into no mans land...

Because CAB had two more proven guys in front of him. Not undervaluing TJ at all...he was #1 for a reason. Just my observations of watching CAB last year. I see 2020 as a breakout for CAB.
