Holmgren has not been contacted yet...

My dad is personal friends with Dave Holmgren. He told me he talked with Dave on the phone today and apparently Ben hasn’t even reached out to Chet yet. He said that Chet told his dad he saw a tweet saying Ben had reached out to him and he told his dad that was news to him. He hasn’t heard anything from Ben Johnson.

Also my dad is at Chets game tonight and Ben Johnson is not there...

Chet obviously is leaning Gonzaga but he is not committed yet.

I realize it’s day 2 but I thought Ben made it clear he would hit the ground running...

This is not the end all be all and obviously the chances are still slim to land Chet but a phone call is probably worth it. Ben can still be a great recruiter without recruiting Chet but it’s just odd to me.

Take it or leave it.

You getting tired yet? You've turned into the neighbor dog with the high-pitched bark who just won't quit. It's gotta be exhausting being so negative for 36 straight hours. Go take a walk and get some air or something.

10 people got killed for happening to be in a supermarket yesterday and you're on EVERY thread on this message board acting like Mark Coyle just embezzled your retirement savings.

Get. A. Grip.

Those exact words were spoken about Richard and Tyus Jones’ class. What class is it reasonable to judge him on? Sincere question. ‘23?
He had an extra year to work on the Jones, Macura, Vaughn, Travis class. They were juniors.

I'm glad Ben is hitting the recruiting trail hard but i hope he saves some time to develop an offense, fix our shooting problems, fix our defense, as well as look at tape on how we didn't make any changes in game as we slowly lost games by 30
PG-.......
SG-Gabe, Williams
SF-Gach
PF-Ihnen, Mitchell
C-Robbins??, Freeman

he sure as heck better be hitting that recruiting trail......we got a roster to fill out....

He has no relationship with chet, he needs to move on. Has no time to try and placate holmgren.
Have no idea if this rumor is true or not, but to the point of Coach Johnson moving on that's ridiculous. One of the best players out of Minnesota in a decade or more (that is saying something), you 100% reach out even if 0...1% chance. Especially if your MO is recruiting.

It's a zero percent chance. Reaching out changes nothing. If chet was serious about the U he would have committed already. Unless there is money involved, johnson should focus on more important things like putting together an excellent coaching staff and finding out how many current players will be returning.

It’s 10 minutes of his time. He isn’t that busy
talking to current players. If he is then maybe find a few minutes to just confirm Chet isn’t interested. I’ve been reading all week Pitino was the issue here...

Shouldn’t his immediate priority be putting together a solid staff and convincing our best existing players to stay put? Those are (1) necessary and (2) attainable goals. He needs to call Chet at some point, and the sooner the better, but com’on. He’s not coming here.

If chet could be convinced to come here in 10 mins to play for an unproven coach, I would agree Pitino would look like 110 percent of the problem.

I love how everyone is a professional recruiter...Makes me wonder why there are not several gopherhole attributers on the staff right now recruiting for Johnson. How did the University miss out on your expertise and skill!
I love how you have nothing to add except ripping other posters for posting on a message board. Might as well shut down the hole, no one allowed to have opinions anymore. No one is an expert, but to think 10 mins could sway chet after being recruited by mark few for years, is farfetched at best. Big knock on pitino was over prioritizing targets he had no chance to sign. We want johnson going down the same path?

Wasn't at the game last night. . . . . . My son play high school ball in the South Suburban Conference. Every game I personally went to allowed 2 fans per player with Covid. Ben most likely can't attend the game. Hello.

Without a coaching staff in place there is zero point to reaching out. He won't come here just because we have a new head coach. The staff matters more. I'd say chances are lower now because there is no assistant coaches on staff yet.

just to get some feedback if anything else.
"So, why wouldn't you consider playing for the Gophers?"

"Because I want to get out of Minnesota and I want to play for a team that can win a national championship. You know I'm a 5*, right?"

"Ohhhhh .... right ... right, right ..... OK, makes sense!"

Done.

For sure. Thats part of the issue. He isn’t a big enough name to land major recruits immediately (no one was going to be that person for the gophers) so he needs to start working now on 22, 23 and beyond. If he isn’t making in roads by the 23 class I think a change is needed. If he is, let it play out. I only feel this way because they have publicly said he was hired to help in state recruiting.

The only issue I have with this line of thinking is that in-state recruiting is just part of the story. Say he isn't making great inroads with local guys but he is getting quality players from out of state and the team is winning.

The problem with Pitino was that the on the court results were mediocre to bad combined with the fact that he struggled to keep a lot of quality players from leaving the state.

There are lots of good basketball players right here in the state of Minnesota. And I will be pretty shocked if Johnson isn't able to do a better job connecting with those players based on some of the comments we have been hearing. But in the end, his job is to assemble the best team possible regardless of where the players come from.

Plus players from Minnehaha Academy like to play in weak conferences where they don't have to play the best players every game...

This. No one would be talking about in-state recruiting if Pitino won big and we could see quality coaching play out on the floor. That's barely even debatable.

I didn’t say he could convince Chet in 10 minutes. He can connect with him and if Chet says “no way, thanks but no thanks” you move on. It isn’t hard to contact the #1 player in the country. If he says no, move on!

At this point seems like Chet and his Dad are really enjoying the ride. They want the attention now, we know you're good. Pick a school already though. I dont see why it's taken this long. Okay you have a good offer from the g league? Take the $1 million
It is funny how people know the motivations of others. When you or your kid(s) are the top recruit, you can do it your way. Until then, how about let a high school kid make a choice at their leisure.

For sure. I started a thread showing it takes out of state players. This is the best Minnesota hoops has been. Lots of Big Ten caliber players that weren’t staying here under Pitino. Johnson needs to make some in roads there and add from elsewhere. He can do it, but i don’t expect patience from fans.

When you were hired to recruit MN and MN has the #1 recruit in America, you damn well better contact him ASAP, even if your odds are 1/1000.
Make the call, yes. However, it is probably to tell Chet that he would love to have him, but it's probably not in his best interest to be a Gopher. Probably the same discussion Whalen had with Bueckers. Chet is G League or Gonzaga
