Gophers get a #1 seed in the NIT - host High Point Tuesday night

Sorry Mav/Smith/Hollins but it's time to play McNeil 25 minutes in every game, and encourage him to look for his offense. Hell, I'd even consider shutting down Andre if he isn't 100%. Play Buggs and King equal minutes. Start Mo over Elliason.

Congratulations on your careers and thank you for your service, seniors! Now go sit on the bench!

We may not be a YOUNG team, but we are certainly not an EXPERIENCED team. This will be a great opportunity to take a longer look at McNeil and Buggs, as well as continue to work on the Pitino system. I guarantee Austin and Mav are not happy about being in the NIT, but I also guarantee they are not going to tank it to get the season over with. As unhappy as all of us are that they didn't make the dance, imagine how they feel? If we're going this route, lets make the most of it and support OUR team as much as possible! Go Gophers!

Look at the N.I.T. as spring football practice. It's a great opportunity for the young players to get minutes in a meaningful game.

I agree to an extent. But nobody is going to get increased minutes if we lose after the first or second game. The goal should be winning the whole thing, which gives everyone more experience. Additionally, all the games after game 1 should be on ESPN/ESPN2 and the semi/championships are played at MSG. That kind of exposure is good pub.

John Galt, you're ridiculous. I have a tough time believing you're a true fan. Maybe you're just very disappointed right now. Nobody is "ok with losing" but this is Pitino's first season. We have to be "ok" with losing. What are we supposed to do, boycott? Is Pitino supposed to get fired? Those are the ways in which fans or administration can be not ok with losing. It's Pitino's first season. Give it a rest.

"We're too good for the NIT! I demand better! I will go sit in the corner and pout until the Selection Committee reconsiders and offers the Gophers a spot!"

I'm in if you think this will work

Just wanted to chime in that I'm pretty sure anyone can watch espn3 games. It's when they're on espn/espn2 and also on espn3 that they make you sign in with your service provider.

I don't have any type of cable/Dish, and I watched a lot of the non conference games that way earlier this year without signing in or anything.

Shouldn't the "John Galt" portion of this thread have ended when the basketball savant stated the "top 64" teams in the country make the NCAA Tournament? (Cal Poly is 13-19 at last check).

This is true. Everyone agrees. But most people don't think they should just give up and go cry in the corner about it. Playing more games is never a bad thing, I don't understand how you can argue against it. Of course making the NCAA tourney is better, but we don't have a choice at this point.

I think saying no to playing more games even if it is the NIT says more about your team's character than not making the NCAA tourney.

Agree with most of this. Sucks to be in the NIT, but since we are there I would like to see us dominate it. Losing/skipping the NIT would definitely we worse than winning it. However, as to the bold, I think 2 years ago we turned down an invitation to play more games when we got into the CBI or CIT or some other damn tournament whose acronym I don't know (and didn't know existed until the Gophers got invited).

"68" teams are in the only tournament that matters.

The game is for the kids. Of course they want to play. This isn't like a bowl game where you get 15 extra practices.
you gear it up right away. If you get to New York you probably do get beneficial practice time, otherwise I don't see
It as a big learning advantage. You don't make any money in the NIT. At 20.00 a ticket I wouldn't expect a crowd of
more than 4-5,000 fans. The first 500 students get a free ticket. I certainly support the team and the diehard fans,
but for me I've seen enough of the Gophers in the NIT to last a lifetime. Many years ago before the NCAA started expanding the dance the NIT was considered equivalent to NCAA tournament. The big thing for the kids is if they make the semifinals they get too play at the Garden. And who wouldn't like hooping it up in the Garden?

As we all knw--when you play hated High Point--you can just throw the record book out the window

Football fans on the Basketball message board

Every year, someone from the football side decides it is his mission to come to the basketball side and explain how bad the basketball program is.
If we make the tournament, they focus on that 'fact' that we will lose.
If we don't make the tournament, how clueless we are for not shunning the program for not achieving the NCAA tournament. How disgusting a 'fact' it is that we are not even one of the top 68 (or 64 if you can't count) programs in the country! Or that some of the opponents are less than the caliber of the powerhouses in the NCAA field, like, oh say, North Carolina Central.

This is my formal invitation. Can we please have some trolls from Wisconsin or Iowa visit the board to perform this vital function, because at least that would make sense.

Don't make me put on my calendar the dates the bowl games are announced so I can return the favor.

We've already deleted some posts in this thread and sent PMs to a few that took this thread way off-topic. Any additional post that isn't on topic will be deleted. Thanks.

How many High Point games have you watched in your life?

None, but I've watched St. Mary's, Utah, Missouri, SMU, FL State, and St. John's numerous times. Some of the reams included because of the automatic qualifier rule (you can look that up since I doubt you know what that is) do weaken the quality of the tournament. Still, there are plenty of quality teams left and the Gophers will not have an easy time winning this tournament. Illinois is a second seed in another bracket and they beat the Gophers decisively a few weeks ago at the barn.

But I would suspect that anyone who names himself "John Galt" isn't very open minded by nature.

Here is the auto-qualifer affect this year: there are 13 automatic bids in the NIT - teams that were their regular season conference champions. (Belmont, Boston University, Davidson, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia State, High Point, Iona, Louisiana Tech, Robert Morris, UC Irvine, Utah Valley, Vermont, and Wisconsin-Green Bay). So many automatic bids this year means so many good teams who would've made the NIT in previous years get pushed to the CIT and CBI.

Agree that the automatic qualifier rule results in some pretty low quality teams pushing out higher quality teams. Still, of those 13 teams on that list, I'd say that maybe 8 anyway are deserving. I think the rule was designed to discourage the selection committee from loading up the tournament with 17-15 quality power conference teams, but there surely must be a better way to accomplish that goal.

The same thing as ESPN 3??

No. ESPN 3 is an internet channel. It's not on cable, but if you have broadband and an internet connection, you should be able to get it on your computer. The few times I've used it the feed has been poor. That may be them or it could be my equipment. Not sure. Good luck.

I don't think I'm being presumptuous thinking that we'll be victorious Tuesday - anyone know when the next game will be?

If you use ESPN3 through Roku or AppleTV is works significantly better than on your laptop or mobile device. It is just as good if not better than cable on my Roku. I'm guessing you can probably stream it through a playstation or xbox as well.

If you have a cable plan that supports it. As said Directv doesn't. ESPN has like 34 channels and can't even bother to broadcast the NIT anymore. Used to be the only reason to watch ESPN was the fringe sports (and tournaments) they showed. Sad day. Maybe Fox Sports One will get the broadcast rights and we can actually see it again.

Anyone know how ESPN3 works in other countries? Or if it'll work at all?

I looked briefly but couldn't find anything. I'm sure someone has experience with this from travelling or some such thing.

ESPN does broadcast the NIT. They just can't broadcast all of it. They'll probably broadcast 3 or 4 of the opening night games at least. The reason they're not broadcasting the Gophers' game is because its a #1 vs. #8 game and isn't expected to be very close (or have much rivalry interest).

Update. They are broadcasting 7 of the 9 opening night games. The other one not broadcast is the Wisc-GB vs. Belmont game. Not sure why they are not broadcasting that because its a 4 vs. 5 seed.

Because the game does not include any team not named Wisconsin-Green Bay or Belmont.

I don't have cable nor satellite so I love it when it is on ESPN 3…I just run it on my computer and put it on my big screen through Apple TV…it works as well as my broadband connection which most days is pretty good. And it is FREE.

ESPN3 works pretty well for me. The picture isn't quite as good as normal HD tv, but it's not bad. Internet connection speed probably has a lot to do with it. I'm guessing all our games after tomorrow night will at least be on ESPNU, if not ESPN or ESPN2.

If you have a Roku (and probably other devices) you can stream ESPN3 directly from it. When the internet connection is sufficient, there really is no noticable difference between the TV channel and the stream. BTN2Go is sadly not on there as of yet.

Playing in a football bowl game is roughly the equivalent of making the NCAA tourney. There are 60+ teams that get to participate in both.

Cause no one responded with actual numbers: According to my count from Wikipedia, there are 37 bowl games. 37 bowls * 2 teams/bowl = 74 teams. 128 FBS teams => 74/128 which is strictly greater than 1/2. So over half the teams in FBS make bowls. 351 teams in D1 for basketball, 68/351 is strictly less than 1/5. So basically this is a ridiculous comparison. I tried to keep them math simple for you, by the way.

Anyway, I'm excited for this game. Hopefully it's not during one of my classes. Hopefully our young guys get some more playing time as we go throughout this tournament, and the seniors get to go out on a positive note.

I was thinking in the next round we will play either St.Mary's or Utah and possibly a Mizzou in the third round. If these teams came to the barn in the non conference schedule would they be the type of home games fans would show up for. I know it's not Duke or Kansas, but they're recognizable names

Yep - we'd be thrilled to see these names in the pre-season.
