Gophers get a #1 seed in the NIT - host High Point Tuesday night

Given the fact that we were picked to finish near the bottom of the conference, I don't think that it can be said that this is a "failed season." While the fact that we made it to the NCAA bubble at the end of the season and didn't quite make it in is disappointing, it is also the fact that we only reached that point because it was a relatively successful season. True, we had some tough losses, but I don't think the fact that we almost had a very good season changes the fact that we over achieved based on pre-season expectations. I'm looking forward to the NIT. While we have some veterans, we also have some young players who can benefit from the experience.
Agreed - we did just well enough to suffer on Selection Sunday.
We'll go to the games.

NIT requires a better than .500 season. I notice that Illinois is the only other BT team - so no Indiana. Think they said 'No thank you'?

It's not the best 64 teams. All the mid and low major conferences get at least one bid. The Gophers are better than about a quarter of the teams in the tournament.

60 out of ~120 football teams go to a bowl game, 68 out of 351 basketball teams go to the tournament. The football team won two thirds of their regular season games this year, which is about what the basketball team has done most of the last 7 years.

+1 The NCAA tournament is not the top 64 (or 68) teams. If it was, the Gophers would be in the NCAA tournament. Making the NIT is like getting to a minor bowl game. We wanted better, but it doesn't do us any good to be miserable about not making the NCAA tournament. If this is a failed season, what can we call the teams that didn't even make the NIT or even the CBI? Enough people will crap on the Gophers, I will not be joining them in doing so.

Playing in the NIT is a reminder that it was a failed season. Better to just shut the thing down for this year and let Pitino spend his time recruiting. If we had a young team, someone could make the argument that guys are getting playing experience that could help them down the road. Unfortunately, we have an old team with mostly juniors and seniors.
How about let's win the NIT outright, and then let Pitino spend some time recruiting. The NIT actually gets decent TV coverage and media attention--especially deep in the tournament. Let's show ourselves to be a team on the rise. Baylor, Iowa, Kentucky, St. Joe's, UMass, Stanford, Stephen F. Austin, Providence, Mercer, and Arizona State were all in the NIT last year, and are all in the Dance this year. Let's win this thing, make the committee wonder if they screwed up, and move on to next year.

Keep digging your hole. I'm sure you feel the same way when gophs don't make the rose bowl, just waste the 15 practices a bowl team gets and shut her down eh? It's been a long 52 years for you hasn't it? Also there are half the D1 football teams compared to basketball teams, so really after the BCS maybe 20 teams are post season worthy if you want to compare the two

Is next year's pre season nit in the same place as the last few games of this tournament? If so, if we have success this year it could help us more in next year's preseason nit. But obviously making the ncaa should have been the best result

I don't think the Gophers or their fans should be down at all about playing in the NIT in a rebuilding year. Keep in mind that Indiana didn't make the NCAA or the NIT.

Sucks that I'll be in class for the first game. I'll probably get unlucky and be in class for the second game as well........

If you go to the U it's spring break this week

Nope. St. Cloud and we had spring break this past week. Just checked out the bracket. Will be able to watch the second round if our game doesn't land on the 20th or 24th and the third round if the game doesn't land on the 25th. I will be in class for both the semifinals and the championship game

Of course we all are feeling down about not making the NCAA tourney, but you have to make the most of the current opportunity.

Go win the NIT, it will be a good experience for the younger players and it will also be a good experience for Pitino.

You continue your run as one of the dumber "fans" here on GH. I hate the NIT, but this is not the year to shut things down. Spend time recruiting? Uh, o.k..

Lol. Are you seriously calling the football board the winners board?

The NIT is the equivalent of the ****ty loss to Syracuse in the everyone gets a trophy bowl.

I'm not making this about football vs. basketball. It sucks to be in the NIT, and no one other than the diehards on this board cares. I'd rather lose by 20 in the 1st round of the real tournament every year than win the NIT. We just lost to Wisky by 26 in the BTT. Wisky, Iowa, Iowa St., and even NDSU are all in the NCAA tourney. We aren't, and that sucks.

That's the best you can do? I'm a dumb fan on here, yet I haven't posted on the basketball board all year. You're really smart, aren't you?

I don't think it is fair to say however that we exceeded expectations just because one idiot writer(Brent Yarina of BTN.com) picked us to finish dead last in the conference. We may not have had the best roster in the big ten going into the year but it did have some talent with both the Hollins coming back and Malik Smith being a 14 PPG transfer coming in. I really can't see how anyone that has any knowledge of college basketball whatsoever going into the year could have picked Northwestern, Nebraska, Purdue, Penn State and also Illinois with how much they lost to all finish ahead of the gophers. I predicted a 6-7 place finish in the big ten right with Iowa and i was about right so i would not consider this season a success or failure, right about how it should have happened with a roster like this one. Any reasonable or knowledgable person would have figured this team to be a last 4 in or a first 4 out team.

Did I write basketball board? Nope. I wrote GH. That is short for GopherHole.

So, what you are saying is that you never post here until now to rip on the team. Real smart.

Agree for the most part. I had them winning one less game and being in the exact same position. I wasn't expecting Nebraska's season.

Not the team. The fans who are ok with losing and being in the NIT.

You've always been one of the most boring posters on here. Not sure if you have had an original thought yet after 7000 posts? Still waiting...

The fans continue to support the team regardless of whether they are playing in the NCAA's or the NIT. If every fan were like you.....this would be a really pathetic fan base.

What would you like them to do? Protest? Stomp on the ground? Again...brilliant.

You are getting killed in this thread so keep going or maybe go back to ripping Leinder on the football board.

Some of us follow the team not just for our own enjoyment but also for the reason of supporting the players and the school. It may be hard for you to imagine a response that involves something other than you and how you feel about it at the center but just try to imagine for a moment a world where that is possible.

This is true. Everyone agrees. But most people don't think they should just give up and go cry in the corner about it. Playing more games is never a bad thing, I don't understand how you can argue against it. Of course making the NCAA tourney is better, but we don't have a choice at this point.

I think saying no to playing more games even if it is the NIT says more about your team's character than not making the NCAA tourney.

It's amazing how some people can't figure that out, isn't it? How dare anyone be supportive? Get your pitchforks out, let's go TP Pitino's house. That'll show him!

Rip the fans that continue to cheer on their team? Oh my.

Why are people feeding the troll? He's obviously not a fan in any way, shape, or form.

Go Gophers! Let's rock out these last few games of the season and end things on a high note.

You really are a dumbass aren't you? He said GH not the basketball board. Also where on this board did anyone say they wanted to be in the NIT other than that POS who started said thread where everyone took him to the woodshed. You made this about football in one of your earlier post

64 teams make the NCAA tourney. We didn't. What would you call a season where you aren't one of the top 64 teams in the country?

Wow.. people really believe this. Did you forget about the auto-magic qualifiers? If you really believe that the powerhouses of Coastal Carolina or Weber St. are truly in the top 64 teams of NCAA basketball, then I've got a bridge to sell you.

Galty just showing his true colors here on the BB board.

Read his stuff on the OT board and you will quickly understand ............

Look at the N.I.T. as spring football practice. It's a great opportunity for the young players to get minutes in a meaningful game.

Sorry Mav/Smith/Hollins but it's time to play McNeil 25 minutes in every game, and encourage him to look for his offense. Hell, I'd even consider shutting down Andre if he isn't 100%. Play Buggs and King equal minutes. Start Mo over Elliason.

"We're too good for the NIT! I demand better! I will go sit in the corner and pout until the Selection Committee reconsiders and offers the Gophers a spot!"
