Gophers get a #1 seed in the NIT - host High Point Tuesday night

+1 I'm not going to say that making the NIT is better than making the NCAA tournament - it's not, making the NCAA is clearly better. But being a #1 seed in the NIT is not a terrible thing. Things are only humiliating if you let yourself be humiliated. It is what it is, if we have to be in the NIT, then let's win it.

This. On the list of humiliating things that have happened in Gopher sports, making the NIT in 2014 does not crack the top 10,000

Congrats to the loser board that is ok with the NIT. Missing the NCAA tourney doesn't make for an ok season. This is the equivalent of the football team going 4-8 and missing a bowl game, but getting to play something called High Point in a consolation football game.

Lol. Are you seriously calling the football board the winners board?

The NIT is the equivalent of the ****ty loss to Syracuse in the everyone gets a trophy bowl.

Congrats to you for being such a winner - I wish I were you

This would be funny if it wasn't true!!

We're in it, we might as well win it.

Go Gophers!!

Look, the NIT may be nothing in your book of cheap minds. To the players, it's important. That is what counts. **** you fair weather fans, and GO GOPHERS!!!

Iowa used a deep NIT run last year to build some media hype and high rankings this year, even though they clearly didn't deserve it. It isn't what anybody wants, but it beats sitting and watching everyone else play.

Playing in the NIT is a reminder that it was a failed season. Better to just shut the thing down for this year and let Pitino spend his time recruiting. If we had a young team, someone could make the argument that guys are getting playing experience that could help them down the road. Unfortunately, we have an old team with mostly juniors and seniors.

Do you not think that we are disappointed? Should we shut the board down due to playing in the NIT. Should we boycott the team and kidnap Coach Pitino due to the failure of this season? Should we remove all mention of our upcoming games and ignore that the team is still playing?

Kudos. You are a pathetic fan.

64 teams make the NCAA tourney. We didn't. What would you call a season where you aren't one of the top 64 teams in the country?

High Point doesn't have a football team.

Playing in a football bowl game is roughly the equivalent of making the NCAA tourney. There are 60+ teams that get to participate in both.

Well, if "we" didn't make it, why don't you get out there and work on your free throws, champ?

Did anyone know they had a basketball team until 15 minutes ago?

I assume most of us did since it's Tubby's alma mater and was talked about quite a bit through the years when he was here.

Go Gophers!!

Well, 4 teams would call it "still being in the NCAA Tournament" since its a 68 team field now.

Go Gophers!!

Playing in the Texas Bowl or the Little Ceasar's Pizza Bowl is the equivalent of playing in the NIT. Not Making the NIT is the same as not getting 6 wins. Playing in any new years day bowl or the Buffalo Wild Wings bowl it the equivalent of making the tourney. If there weren't any auto bids and it was actually the top 64 teams then it would be the rough equivalent of of getting 6 wins but not really since there are over 300 teams in basketball and 120 in football.

No, it isn't. Any B1G team that finishes .500 makes a Bowl even if they are 3-5 or 2-6 in conference, typically 8 teams at least. Generally, making the Texas/Music City/Insight Bowl is no better than making the NIT.

2013 may have been an exception to that, as the Gophers actually went 4-4, 8-4 and got screwed on which Bowl game they went to. 2013, 1999 and 2003 teams that went to the Sun Bowl with Mason are the only years that the football team had an 'NCAA tournament' type of year. The rest of the toilet bowls were NIT-esque.

You're being such a tool, I can't believe I'm responding. There are 120-130 FBS teams and like 300 DI hoops teams. If it were equivalent - the NCAA tourney would have around 120+ teams.

This team was predicted, like the football, team to finish last or next to last in the preseason. Like the football team, they played good, bad, and ugly ball - but overall exceeded expectations. Let down at the end of the season, but excited to see what happens next.

Exactly. There are 128 FBS teams and 350 basketball teams. Nearly half make a bowl. It is not the equivalent.

How many top 25 teams did the football team beat this year? How about rivals?

Its more like not being top 45 with the auto bids and our RPI was 50. Its not really fair to say that we weren't a top 68 team in college basketball this year.

It's not the best 64 teams. All the mid and low major conferences get at least one bid. The Gophers are better than about a quarter of the teams in the tournament.

60 out of ~120 football teams go to a bowl game, 68 out of 351 basketball teams go to the tournament. The football team won two thirds of their regular season games this year, which is about what the basketball team has done most of the last 7 years.

I'd call it a "John Galt" - weak but it is what it is.

Nope. About half the football teams make a bowl game. About 20% percent make the basketball tournament.

Stick to the terrible fiction that you apparently worship.

When was the last time the football team beat Wisconsin? That is easily the most humiliating part of being a Gopher fan right now so get off your ****ing high horse. Only Gopher fans would troll Gopher fans of different sports.

This has turned into a very dumb thread. Why don't all you guys meet at Parski's house and duke it out.

Given the fact that we were picked to finish near the bottom of the conference, I don't think that it can be said that this is a "failed season." While the fact that we made it to the NCAA bubble at the end of the season and didn't quite make it in is disappointing, it is also the fact that we only reached that point because it was a relatively successful season. True, we had some tough losses, but I don't think the fact that we almost had a very good season changes the fact that we over achieved based on pre-season expectations. I'm looking forward to the NIT. While we have some veterans, we also have some young players who can benefit from the experience.
