Gophers at New Mexico State - TV Broadcast Situation

All the complaining about this game possibly not being televised is humorous. There is no Big Ten Network where I live, so I don't get to see most games that I'm not attending. It's not the end of the world (though Las Cruces might be).

That said, I'm making this trip. Flights to El Paso are surprisingly expensive, but Albuquerque is quite cheap ($208 round trip for me). It's a three-hour drive each way to Las Cruces, but it will give me a chance to check out a part of the country which I've never really explored.

When you only play 12 or 13 games a year, it is a big deal to me. You wait all year for the season, and it would be disappointing to not have the game televised.

I wouldn't expect to have every Mississippi State game on TV every week here, either. I don't think it's that far fetched to expect a Gopher game televised here in Minnesota, where the U is the only D-1 college in the state, in the 15th largest media market in the US.

A few things of note on the broadcasting front.

- Nothing to do with the NMSU game, but Comcast is finally picking up BTN2Go this season.

- An Aggies fan Tweeted at me that AggieVision was picked up by ESPN3.com over the past few seasons. At this point, the game isn't on the slate, but could be added later. NMSU was part of the now defunct WAC which had games picked up by the ESPN networks and syndicated by ESPN plus. So there was a relationship there that is now severed which may account for ESPN3.com not having the game so far.

- AggieVision's own site noted that select games were picked up by Fox Sports Arizona and Altitude both of which get clearance on DirecTV. No way to tell if that carries over to this season.

- In my youth, I recall usually getting a game per week on ABC with the few doubleheaders being big deals. The Gophers were lucky to get a game per year on the air at best. However, times and expectations have changed. Every game for every Big XII, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC team aired on TV last year. Most ACC and Big East games did as well, with a few sneaking on to ESPN3.com. Of those ACC and Big East ESPN3.com games, all but three were non conference mismatches.

I'm not saying anyone has a right to see a particular game on TV, but the days of listening on the radio and thinking of a televised Gopher game as a special event are long over. Putting the Gophers in a position to not make TV in the Twin Cities is a bad showing on the part of the athletic department.

Sid Hartman's source says "no chance of the New Mexico game being televised"

per Sid:

Teague talks TV

Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague was asked if the football team’s lone nonconference road game at New Mexico State on Sept. 7 will be televised.

“[The first game of the year at home against] UNLV will be, and we’re not sure about New Mexico State on the road yet,” he said.

Right now the word from a good source is there is no chance of the New Mexico game being televised.

However, Teague added: “All of that will be coming out here really soon as the Big Ten starts shuffling and assigning TV assignments. We’ll see. I have a feeling it probably will [be televised] and we hope so.”

Go Gophers!!

But but but.... Sid just guaranteed it wouldn't be televised!
I would not believe Sid Hartman 1 bit, heck, i would not be anyone from Star Tribune period, that is Sid, Patrick, Jim Souhan. Those are the 3 you never want to believe anything anymore.

When you listen to Sid you lose your hearing.

When you lose your hearing you confuse Chisago with Chicago.

Dump Sid

Get Direct TV

Anybody know which directv package will have one of those channels?

ESPN3 will work for me too I guess.

DirectTV 681?
Have to check if I have that one when I get home.

I assume this is the same ESPN3 that I get through my iPad & ESPN app, even though I'm an Xfinity/Comcast guy?

I think the only way you'd have those channels on Directv is if you have the top line package (all the channels), or you have the Sports Pack. You could just turn on the Sports Pack for the weekend and turn it right back off afterward.

Altitude is 681
FS Arizona is 686
Don't believe Directv has CSN Houston.

Have you done that before? That's what I'm thinking of doing, but I'm concerned that they'll try to charge me the upgraded price for the full month. Do they just charge you the pro-rated cost for a day or two?

I have Comcast, and they only charge for the time that you have the channel, however they charge a service fee for adding the package so they make you pay somehow. I assume other providers do something similar.

This is what Dish Network does as well. At this time last year I had Dish and upgraded to get CBS sports network for the UNLV game. They charged me the prorated rate of the upgrade (so 1/30th of $5-$8, whatever it was) as well as a fee that was a few dollars. It was worth it. I have directv now and I'm hoping they do something similar.

If its on Dish Network, it might be worth just going to Joe Senser's and watching the game there. That's probably what I will do if it doesn't get picked up by anything on Comcast. Heck, that's probably what I would do even if Comcast does pick it up, I tend to enjoy myself more with a group of friends at a sports bar. If anyone is at Senser's, feel free to swing by my table. I'll be the one in the Eric Decker jersey.

ESPN3 was added to apple tv a few weeks back. Hopefully they won't black our game out.

I wouldn't recommend that route unless you enjoy being hold with Direct TV's frontline customer service representative trying to amend a purported error on your billing statement. I've been burnt before trying to add an upgraded package for < a 30 day billing cycle and they'll charge you the minimum monthly package rate and pro-rate you thereafter if you cancel after 30 days. Long story short I'd activate the sports package via your online account a day or so before the game and cancel the upgraded sports pack 30 days later. The D*TV sports pack is only $12.99 a month which is a hell of lot cheaper than 2 or 3 beers, a meal or an app plus tip at a Joe Senser's or a BW3.

Not that tight of a timeline, but like a couple weeks of a premium channel. It was prorated for the half of month. I don't recall a service charge, but I could be misremembering cause this was like 5 years ago lol. They could have changed everything by now tho.

Ah, interesting, I don't recall getting the full month for it initially. If that's the case, yeah, I'd just measure the worth to you of either going out somewhere that'll have it, vs. if you really wanna have the comforts of home while you watch. For me personally, that $13 would be worth it, cause I enjoy watching it from the comfort of my home lol. Also allows for DVR ability if you have/want to.

Hey ESPN 3 is good enough for me.

Did I miss something? Where does it say it will be on ESPN 3?

I know on my sports add on package (cable tv), I get three different Fox College Sports channels that show various college sports games. Many of the Gopher hockey games are on there. I'm assuming there is a chance it is shown on one of these games since it is being carried on a FS affiliate.

I too have pulled that trick in the past when the sports pack was needed for a single game but Direct TV no longer pro rates if you have a specific package for less than 30 days. I specifically asked that very question to the DTV CSR and they have changed their policy and billing to reflect that.

This Aggie Vision guy on Twitter (Frank Allison) said ESPN3 picks up Aggie Vision.

Good to know for future reference, thanks for the tip!

Fair point in bold. However, the cost of 2 or 3 beers and a meal or app at Joe Senser's or BW3 includes 2 or 3 beers and a meal or app.
