Gopher Hockey Recruiting

I said 1 because I recalled him playing one instead of two. Basically my question is who was the last legitimate NHL goalie from the U.
An NHL goalie would be great but I care more that we have had solid to really good college goaltending. Laffer won a Richter award btw.

Adam Wilcox had no NHL career but I’d take another one of him in a heartbeat.

I'd say if the Gophers had NHL caliber goaltending in those big games from 2022-2024, there could have been two titles in three years. The Gophers are often amazing despite just good goaltending. Why can't we hope for great.

Especially now that it's easier to find it

McKay won a hobey, perets is in the AHL, Matt Davis ain’t making the nhl. Devin Levi has just barely cracked a lineup and is looking rough for Buffalo. There are very very very few NHL goalies in any league. There are only 60 or so rostered a year and they play a long time. For whatever reason, the goalie making the NHL somehow decides if they’re good enough or not despite the fact it’s less than 1% of college goalies that ever make it given there’s an awful lot of leagues and very few goalies who get to play. Very different than your skaters. There’s about 4 guys being seriously talked about for the NHL now with Fowler, Augustine, Gajan and Slukynsky with Slukynsky I think already being rather a shocker if he has a meaningful career in the NHL because of the change towards having bigger and bigger tenders (some of the same that’s being said about Augustine now). Everybody wants these guys and they want to start from the get go of arriving. We’ve had some older goalies recently and close sticking around which is going to limit that. There are multiple ways to do the goalie approach and going with a little older/seasoned guy is not a problem as these guys can all be outplayed in a one and done (Augustine was not great last year when MSU was bounced either).

The NHL thing is more or less just me saying we don't get ultra high end goalies.

How many recent Gopher goalies outside of Wilcox have even stuck in the AHL? I agree I'd take another Adam Wilcox all day every day, and the fact that he stuck in the AHL means he's a better goalie than the others we've had.

I'm setting the goals high but also can understand how few NHL goalies stick. The pain is seeing Minnesotans do damn well (Oettinger, Lyon, Slukynsky promising)... We can't miss the next Minnesotan great. Keep the borders locked down. At the same time, Wendt may be the next Edquist.

We all hope for great, and I don't even disagree with your point about winning a title or two with an elite goaltender.

Once again it's the tone of your message and overall doom and gloom that people have issue with. If you ever figure this out you will be a great message board poster.

John Stout to uw. It's okay, it's not like he'll be more ready for college than the three super raw 07 D the Gophers have lined up for next season...

we'll see how many guys we're actually replacing next year. Koster for sure. The rest we'll see. would guess theyll push some for chesley. rinzel i think they leave in college. Whipple and Gruba will be looking to move into bigger roles and Thomas and Mittelstadt are back for sure.

You have 9 with two guys you don't really like to play. You want them to be your 8 and 9 again next year.

Lose Koster
Lose Chesley as he's doing decent enough to get a contract
Rinzel major risk

You might need to bring in three guys. For sure two. And we all know Motzko doesn't hit the portal (Wood and Souliere basically came to him).

I don’t disagree with you that there’s a chance you need 3. Bob has used the portal as you cite and none of us know exactly how it played out. Again we’ll have to see who all is coming and going. Bob did pretty well filling this year yet again at the areas of need

I'm shocked that Bonin is panicked and complaining about things. The only reason Bonin is complaining about Stout is that we didn't get him. Any recruit the Gophers don't get is a miss for him. He thinks we should have a 50 man roster with all of the players he wants. Maybe he should apply to be the lead recruiter and then the Gophers would win 10 straight Natty's.

Me calling out guys they miss one by one is the same as those people that put together a list of 20 recruits at the start of every cycle and check off all the ones that go elsewhere.

Forward pipeline looks okay
D pipeline looks sketchy and bare
G pipeline is literally empty

It looks like no first rounders in the whole pipeline potentially, and there were none in the 2024 incoming freshman class. I am of the opinion Motzko's recruiting is on the downhill now the same that happened to Lucia. Maybe I'll be wrong but that's just one person's opinion as Berchild felt a lot like Boeser going elsewhere. Some rumors the parents don't like how the U itself and Dinkytown is trending, which I completely agree with. Gophers completely botched the Boeser thing by blowing him off when he was in the Mariucci parking lot for a visit. So Motzko is dealing with more macro factors but will have to figure something out.

Color me shocked the people of the western suburbs don’t like the direction dinky is headed when all that’s ever publicized is any crime. If you wanted a smaller private school that’s fine with truly excellent hockey, Denver is the best place in the country. Denver is going to be every bit as liberal as the U of M (hence the whole them creating a big shit storm wanting to get rid of the Pioneers moniker because it “endorses violent colonialism” a few years ago). Regardless, it’s a beautiful city in a great state with lots of outstanding outdoors things (random aside, I wonder if they allow their players to go skiing?) and the best coach in the nation. I wouldn’t try make a mountain out of someone choosing to go there, especially someone who went Minnetonka—>Shattuck—>USNTDP

For sure. And unfortunately the kids that come from money are often the ones that excel at hockey these days because of the advantages that come with that. Berchild's family is loaded.

But I will say, Dinkytown is waaaaaay worse as far as crime than it was ten years ago. We didn't deal with any of the crap happening there on many weekends now.

Yep.

People come from the city and shoot fireworks at cars and people. It's a bad place at drinking time. It never used to be that way. It's sad.

They come from the west bank. Short trip, which is unfortunate for Dinkytown.

Brook Cullen - MSU

Meaning they'll probably get the other two.

We’ll see if it works. Lot of scholarships to eat up but with B10 likely expanding rosters it won’t really matter by the time he hits campus

Lots of U of M kids go out of Dinkytown to drink and party now. Neighbors kid says NE or STP are destinations. Maybe better bars, cost, or safer, probably different reasons for everyone.

If Motzko goes after and gets this kid I won't post for three months.

Flood gates are opening. Time to wake up Bob.
A random prior 4th round draft pick committing to Vermont is your big call to action? He’s cited as being at best an AHL player in their system to the point where they relinquished his rights and who is doing well in the OHL this year as an overage player. I hope we’re generally aiming higher than winning recruiting battles with vermont for guys with debatable long term futures.

These guys are going to have a big impact on college hockey considering they're coming in as 21 year old freshmen. Which I don't like but you have to adjust to the times. This is one of the better unsigned 2004s in the CHL. He'll likely put up some points and my point is the caliber of players committing is ramping up and you don't want to be too late to get in the mix.

Also you act like a 4th round pick wouldn't be a solid recruit for any NCAA team including the Gophers...

Or put it this way. You don't think that kid will have a bigger impact in college hockey than Hayden Reid? I'd swap those two for next season every time.

He’s 18. We don’t have room for next year which is not when Reid is coming in. This kid wants to come in next year and is trying to land in the pros asap and has said as much.

No I don’t want a random 4th rounders who’s nhl team gave up his rights for one year.

Cedric Guindon is 21 in April. Reid: I just don't think he's very good and I don't think he'll wear a Gopher jersey.

The Gophers absolutely have space for one or two forwards next year and if you don't see that you're not paying attention.

Lose 4 forwards, maybe 5
Return 10, maybe 9

Bring in Mooney and Moore.
Nevers, Townsend, Reid, and Kvasnicka could all use another year of juniors.

So ya, you can bump some of those guys to help not only their development but also the 25-26 Gophers.

Much Much Much rather be in the portal for someone (which you can get better players than he is) once you know what you have back.

Totally fine we can have different approaches, but this is not as dramatic as you’re making it

You already know... Snuggerud is gone. You're only waiting on Wood and Moore and I highly doubt both go. With the portal you get 3 or fewer years out of the guy. College coaches are going to like getting 4 years out of these way too old for college hockey Canadians.

He’s not staying for 4 years. He has said he wanted to sign a nhl contract. Yea Bob should recruit the OHL. This is not the guy to die on that hill and I am talking about this specific recruit

I'm not either about this kid. I'm just calling out that it's ramping up and you're going to start seeing the NCHC teams and Big Ten teams getting a handful of impact players to commit.

Yeah and that’s totally fair he should recruit the OHL. You also said the floodgates are opening and he needs to wake up in response to this kid committing. It’s not that dire
