Gopher Hockey Recruiting

Hard to know what to say with Mooney with the injury but a ppg before he went out is not “bad”. We’ll see how he finishes the year. But yea they definitely need additional high end talent
He just got ranked in the 200s by Central Scouting. Yikes.

Rumor mill on HFB "Sounds like we may have some news coming soon...first big name guy may have picked a school."

Probably BS but you never know. I'm ready to be saddened.

His rankings have been super all over the board. Hard to know what to make of it in light of all the time he missed, but I have zero problem if he’s a 5th rounder and spends 4 years on campus as I think he’ll be productive at this level with his play making. Hoping he ends up being similar to Zeimer or Hendrickson is very reasonable from a production standpoint and you need those guys. At his size, the likelihood of being a first rounder was always exceedingly rare

Seems closer to Taylor Cammarata than Logan Cooley

Very possible but you definitely take near 100 point contributors whenever you can get them
It will become more of a moot point when everyone gets a full scholarship because yes then you take that for the "price" of one scholarship all day every day.

We should absolutely be expecting 100 points in a career from Mooney based on expectations.

So is he a 1st rounder or a 5th rounder to you? Just asking because either you think he’s high tier and the screw the rankings so we really don’t “need” another blue chipper or you don’t and agree with the rankings thus “expecting” 100 points out of a 5th rounder is pretty crazy.

This is not a dig at you, but he’s still the same player he was this fall, just pushed back a little on dev due to the time he missed

Huh? He's absolutely not a first rounder. We need first rounders as we might lose three or even all four of them this offseason.

They're definitely giving him a full ride and I'm really not so sure about that at this point. But I was calling out that once everyone gets a full ride, even if he's not a superstar, a four year 2nd/3rd liner is good enough.

More meaning expecting 100 points at the college level out of anyone aside from your 1st round draft picks is over the top. Brodzinski didn’t hit that until his bonus year. Nelson didn’t over his entire career. So that’s why I’m asking what you think irrespective of his ranking for the draft as I think he’s a very intriguing guy in this class but I’m not expecting 100 points though I hope he takes that development angle.

First rounders are actually rarely going to hit 100 points because they will leave after one or two years.

Mooney is the combination of too tiny for the NHL but skilled that results in a four-year career expectation that is much more likely to add up to 100 points.
20 + 25 + 25 + 30

I mean we all know he’s not 1 or 2 and done, and outside of the high first rounders, it’s seeming line we see less and less of that (example our current 1st rounders who will all be 3 year plus guys). Again I’m more getting at almost no 3rd round or later guys are “expected” to hit 100 points. Don’t know why we’d start with him.
Kurth and Lamb could get there with good finishes to this year and solid years next year (provided they stay which I’d think they would).

Last year we had 2 freshmen hit that 20 pt mark who were both 1st rounders. Year before 2 hit it who were also both first rounders. Year before that it was just Knies (though Lucius and Pitlick were close). Again that’s why im asking what you think his talent level is. Most 3-4 year guys don’t hit that mark. You’ve got be a high end player to do so (which I’m certainly hoping he is). Very happy to see him be a Walker, McLaughlin, etc who sticks it out and hits that mark, but it’s a crap shoot who of that crop hits that type of production consistently

Again I’m not here to fight you about points and production and so on. I’m asking you what you honestly think of his talent. Sometimes first rounders “talents” go in the third round due to features like size. I’m hoping that’s him but I don’t watch enough prospects outside gophers recruits /targets and family friends to know where he will end up falling.
