Correct we just think athletic dudes are good defenders sometimes I think. Being a good defender is hard. It requires more than effort. It requires knowledge, vision, and sacrifice. Jarvis gave an effort and worked hard, but he got lost positionally all the time
ffs. I think the stats comparing him to Hollins earlier say it all. His value dropped every year. While I'd like to keep him I don't think he's irreplaceable.

This didn’t happen often to Gabe until mid way this year. Most teams didn’t help off him a ton and he created space. Also no one shot well. At some point it’s not just a Gabe issue. He can certainly carry much of the blame as he was awful and had lost all confidence before he went out with his injury. However this whole team fell apart.
Guy is a gym rat and incredibly hard worker. It’s mental with him and a confidence thing. One thing to add that can effect performance. He never lost before these last two years. I’m sure it wore on him and others.Well maybe that's what it would take to actually motivate him to fix his shot?

Hear what you are saying and at the same time he did have an awful lot of really good looks that were airballs or bricks. I would want him back as well.

It all changed when the 3 point line was moved back staring with the 2019-2020 season. I was on 1.75 inches but it has made a huge difference for him. 2018-2019 was the only year he shot the ball well and it happened to be his first year.
Check my post history. I’m far from the “one of us” nostalgic types. I do like high character guys who do things right. I also get tired of seeing folks sad that we are losing Martice Mitchell and David Mutaf, but rip Gabe. I think when creating a culture in year zero, Gabe is a perfect fit. Will we win a ton of games if he’s relied on to be the 3rd guy offensively? Probably not unless we are a top 10 defensive team in the country.
I’d bet he’s not be happy with his shooting either. If he wasn't angry then yeah we wouldn’t want him back. I’d really be interested like the post you replied to said and see the difference if he’s getting more threes in transition or in some sort of rhythm more consistently
It's not like the 3-point line moved 5 feet. It was a small move. He was already shooting from those types of spots before it moved. Your statement that Gabe can shoot, I think is just wrong. Maybe it was style of play, but shooters shoot. The really good ones move to open spots without the ball. If Carr dribbles into a spot, it's Gabe's responsibility to move to an open spot on the floor. This needs to look like Ben's team; I'm fine if he leaves. If he chooses to stay, I hope to hell he gets way better than he is. Two straight years of deterioration from him is not a good look.
His 3pt% has also dropped significantly outside of that one season
The difference in your comparison is that Martice and David are being looked at based on their potential and people want to see if that plays out. Gabe has had three years. One really promising year as a Freshman which gets everyone's hope up; followed by two declining years. If Martice and David had the same history, everyone would be shoving them out the door.
I know the difference and it was kind of my point. I think it’s hilarious that we think dudes that couldn’t crack the line up are better than the ones we had in. Especially when we were beating some good teams. I’m far from a Pitino fan, but he and his staff were at practices everyday not us who watch a dude score some points in garbage time and think it’s indicative of whether they are good or not.
Gabe had surgery to fix the break so probably a bit more complex that being assumed.
I thought he played decent on offense, getting open looks off of hard cuts. Still put up 10ppg, that long ball just wouldn't fall. I want him back and that would be awkward if he went to wisconsin and left Ben like that

I think that is what is confusing to most of us that see people dismiss him. He is a DeLaSalle kid, from Minnesota of course, worked hard, was a great teammate, led by example from an effort standpoint, was an excellent defender, is solid in the classroom, and averaged double figures in the Big Ten. He did not shoot well last year. No one disputes that. But he was a tremendously valuable member to the team overall. We do not want to lose players like this.
