True but the other three all became more "go to guys" who end up taking more shots and in some cases the opportunities are not as open as when they were in a more complimentary role. As I said though- your point is good.

He is not correct on Joey King and Mason. I demonstrated that empirically. One was a consistently good (actually, very good) shooter and the other was largely a below average shooter but his senior year was his best. You can make conclusions based on lower quality evidence or higher quality evidence. The choice is yours.

Great, now show out. I have to tell my daughter this all the time. Putting in work is great, showing out is just as important.
 

Good luck to him and I am sure he is a good kid but he just isn't a Power 5 player on the offensive end anymore

Wild, wild guess: they (or BJ alone) told him that if he stays, his role may be more limited than in the past?

Otherwise, I agree ... doesn't make any sense.
 

Keeping Minnesota kids home....from the beginning this hire felt like a reach hoping to get Minnesota talent to stay home....good for Gabe to leave as he took a lot of heat last year some of it deserved...it didn’t help that Carr played absolutely no defense leaving Gabe trying to help all the time.
 

It's not that Gabe is some out of this world talent we couldn't replace. It's that we hired Johnson (and Thoreson) to keep kids exactly like him here. And he left to go to a team that was AWFUL last year, its not a guarantee of failure, but it's not anything in the realm of good news. If we were replacing him with super high level kids fine, but the middle of the road guys Im not sure are doing that. Buckle up boys, it may be a pretty bumpy ride. (PLEASE prove me wrong BJ!!)
 



Not a big loss by any means. If you can't replace a player like him, then your program is in huge trouble.

There are 3 people verbally committed to this team next year. No way that conversation happened.

my wild ass guesses that I haven’t seen on here are 1) Gabe felt like BJ sold him on bs the first time around, and/or 2) was pissed when BJ left after recruiting him to stay home. I know RJ said that Johnson was the only reason Gabe was still considering staying home, but RJ has a vested interest in keeping people happy enough with BJ to read about him. Plus that would be a super MN thing to say on your way out the door.

he probably just wanted a clean start tho. All things considered, I’m glad he’s out of the big ten, wish him well.

Honestly, it's the natural thing that kids everywhere go through. You grow up some place, you get angsty and resentful as you approach your freedom, towards your "captors" and the place you feel like is your "jail", then you fly the coop to anywhere that isn't here for a while .... then you come home to raise a family.

I disagree. It’s a big loss from a defense perspective, shooting perspective, leadership perspective, and really puts a dent into Coach Johnson’s theme of keeping MN kids home.
 

I generally think it is a smart thing for players that have coaches leave or be fired to enter the portal. Take a look around see your options. I would not hold it against them if they chose to leave. With that said, I was really suspecting that Gabe would be looking at a school that gave him the option to be on a better team and make the tournament next year. Unless, Iowa State has a loaded transfer class and Freshmen class, I would not suspect they will do really well. Regardless, good luck Gabe and very glad he didn't go to another Big Ten school.
 


Ames is the closest city (Minneapolis excepted) to the TC with a power 6 school.

Maybe BJ told Gabe how he envisioned his role, with an emphasis on defense and leadership and minutes and shots assuredly dropping. If in Gabe’s mind, he’s a volume shooter and a top offensive option, this would be a tough pill to swallow.

I wish Gabe the best. I can’t imagine how tough last year was on him mentally. Hopefully some new scenery does him well and he regains his freshman form.

Let's pump the brakes on the Johnson narrative. Trying to stop an in-state player from transferring after playing 3 years here is apples and oranges to bringing in-state HS recruits. Not getting Race is more of an indictment than losing Gabe, although that is still not nearly the same as losing out on an in-state HS kid you were probably working on for multiple years.
