If you get fired three times in seven years your not a good coach.

Disregard the 10 years he spent as head coach in Minnesota and just look at the last seven years of a 17 year pro head coaching career. Well played.

The first NBA GM was Kevin McHale, and is wasn't even so much that he got fired as it was simply making a change for the sake of change. And the T-Pups have never been the same. In retrospect, it was not a good move.

His getting fired from Detroit, was looked at by a lot of people in NBA circles as probably not fair. But there is not fair in big time pro sports. Owners can hire or fire whoever they want, and many times good coaches get fired and the team gets worse.

His 3rd gig? Well, some teams are so bad, it doesn't matter who they hire to coach the team.

Some situations its the managements fault, not the coaches fault, but management blames the coach, because otherwise they would get fired.

The fact that you don't understand these kinds of things JohnnyBOY, is not surprising because you are just a stupid kid who hasn't been around long enough to have figured this sh1t out yet.

You must not pay attention to the NBA, getting hired 3 times means far more. George Karl has been fired 3 times, Adelman 4 times; both are top 5 NBA coaches. If you coach in the NBA you'll get fired, and if considered good you'll get hired again and again.

Actually agree.

Lets look at various winners of the "NBA Coach of the Year" award and times they've been fired

Gregg Popovich 2012 - never fired
Tom Thibideau 2011 - never fired
Scott Brooks 2010 - never fired
Mike Brown 2009 - fired by Cavs and Lakers
Byron Scott 2008 - fired by Nets and Hornets
Sam Mitchell 2007 - fired by Toronto
Avery Johnson 2006 - fired by Mavs and Nets
Mike D'Antoni 2005 - fired/resigned by Suns and Knicks
Hubie Brown 2004 - fired/resigned by Hawks, Knicks, and Grizzlies
Greg Popovich 2003 - never fired
Rick Carlisle 2002 - fired by Pistons and Pacers
Larry Brown 2001 - fired/resigned multiple times
Doc Rivers 2000 - fired by Orlando
Mike Dunleavy 1999 - fired by Lakers and Blazers, stepped down from Bucks and Clippers (GM)

Getting fired in the NBA happens to a lot of good coache.

I did not make reference to mid-major. My reference was that a large majority here on GopherHole think Shaka Smart is the True Reincarnation, and I just happen to not agree. Who is the True Incarnation? Damned if I know.

Another chance to vote for me but no mention.

Do you believe these guys getting into a pissing match? Something you or I would never do.:cool02:

Very true. Often times professional coaches are fired just to satisfy the fan base. MLB probably tops the list. Pro coaches often have very little say in the make-up of the roster. In college sports the coach is the GM as well as on field/court manager, and is responsible for acquiring the players.

In pro sports many times a star player(s) will have input into aquiring players. See Kevin Garnett.

Didn't the Twins have a pitcher who set the major league record by starting his career 0-24? Doesn't mean he was the worst pitcher. He had to be somewhat good to get 24(or more starts).

His name is Terry Felton:

Hey why don't you either supply PROOF, or let it go until you do?!

I've supplied a link to the mshsl website that backs up my recollection. I've admitted that maybe, somehow, theres the possibility that both I, my friend who was at the game with me, and the mshsl website are ALL wrong. But until you supply some proof to back you up, just let it go. You are acting like a little immature prick.

And I don't care one iota if you believe that I've got a 20 something girlfriend or not. Just like God or aliens or a 9/11 conspiracy or any other thing out there that some people believe in and others don't, don't "need" you or anyone to believe that they exist for it to be true that they do, or that they don't.

Everyone knows I'm MinnesotaPride, so when I take her to a Gopher game, I'll introduce her to whatever GHs are there. Until then, go ahead and keep being a class act and calling me a liar.

I didnt call you a liar. Never.

I said you are wrong. And you are. Just admit it.

3 posters have told you so, one of which lived in Lake City during the Breuer era, one played in the same conference during the same era, and the other is as knowledgeable a basketball guy that I have ever met - Selection Sunday.

Admit it - and it will be done.

I'm agreeing with you here, and piling on Johnnyboy a little. Here are a few damn good college coaches who were either fired or forced to resign from the NBA:

Rick Pitino
John Calipari
Lon Kruger
Jerry Tarkanian

Flip coached the Wolves for 10 seasons, a lifetime in the NBA. Then he got hired again. He got fired from Detroit for reaching the conference final all three years, but his successor lost in the first round the following year. Then he got hired again. With the Washington Generals, er, Wizards, he had no chance.

There seems to be a love-hate thing going on with Flip. While I think it would be great to find someone better, I'm not sure we could. But I admit I may be focusing on the positives. On the other hand, to the non-Flip crowd he's the basketball equivalent of Marc Trestman. He's proven to be a good NBA coach. Good to great college coach? Nobody knows.

You "implied" that I was lying about having a 20 something girlfriend.

And I sorry I don't INSTANTLY believe some poster on an internet sports discussion board, who I don't know from Adam, in opposition to what the MSHSL website says, what my memory recalls, what a good friend of mine recalls, what my entire home town possibly believes.

I am sure that there is some explanation that probably makes us both right, to some degree. As much as two people saying opposite things can both be right.

I'm a little lost here since I generally don't read your posts (as I'm sure many people don't given their absurd length), but are you claiming to be an "old fart" with a girlfriend in her 20s? Is that a joke, or are you basically telling us that you are a disgusting human being?

I can't help but think that GH would be much improved if it had a reputation system for posting.

I didnt say a word about your girlfriend or anyones girlfriend. You are obviously confusing me with another poster, which is not surprising given your insistence on the Lakers - which I know is incorrect.

GophersOnTheRise --

WOW, lol, are you honestly going to pull out some sort of PATHETIC judgemental card on me?! WOW

That is TOO FRIGGIN FUNNY!!!!!

This old fart, is a whole 45, and that 20 something is going to be a 30 something before I turn 46.

And I will admit to doing things that aren't "righteous" when I am guilty as charged, but with many years of Bible College under my belt, and decades of my life spent studying the scriptures, and a girlfriend with a heart for ministry and a desire to minister to the less fortunate in this world, I could be offended at your completely uncalled for and IGNORANT attempt to put yourself in a place to judge me.

But I'm choosing to take humor in your attempt to discredit my opinions I post about sports, by trying to make me out to be a "disgusting human being".

Barnburner --

I apologize, I was wrong, you did not imply that I was lying about my girlfriend. You only stated emphatically that I was making an ass out of myself, despite the fact that I posted the MSHSL website to back up what was apparently a very legitimately held memory of mine, corroborated by several other people.

I admitted the possibility that I could be wrong, but you are calling me out for simply not accepting your word for it.

My years of study have taught me that its not a good idea just to believe this or that without proof to back whatever it is up.

I've stated that AFTER you show me proof, then I will publicly admit that I was wrong. As I am now publicly admitting that I was wrong about who implied I was lying. That was Winisotagopher. I am sorry for making this mistake, and should feel horrible for making such an error, especially in regards to someone who was being so courteous and kind to me leading up to my making this error.

Thread has been hijacked.

Winasota Gopher --

I remember just laughing at your comment when you first made it, and then let it go.

So if that was all it was, it wouldn't be an issue.

Ha. If it makes you feel any better I was picturing like 60 and 23. That, to me, would be disgusting. Sorry if you disagree. I also never tried to discredit your opnions. Not sure where you got that from.

Ok, I'm fine with that. Does make me feel better actually.

Gotta say, one half of me would want to congratulate the 60 year old for nabbing him a 23 year old. And the other half of me, would lean towards agreeing with your assessment of it being kind of disgusting. lol But I guess that would depend on the situation and circumstances. Probably disgusting because in cases like that, its rare the woman actually loves the man, they love his money. But I would not want to be one to try to dictate the rules of love to other people and even if I disapproved, I'd not think it my place to tell him or them that publicly.

As for the whole discrediting my opinions thing, where did I get that from? That is usually the intent behind why people choose to attack the person they are discussing/arguing something with's character.

Although it is not always the case, so I will accept your word on that.

Now if barnburner can just agree to let the whole Lakers vs Tigers thing rest until I've had a few days to figure that out, we could get back to talking about Gopher bb.

Just admit myself and others are correct and move on.

Barnburner --

Call me stubburn and principled. You haven't earned it. PROVE IT is what I say to you.

Or let it go. Thing is, its got me very curious now. How both me and my friend could have the same memory and supposedly we are wrong?! I am curious to figure out how that happened.

Like I said, my local hometown newspaper's headline the day after the game said, "LAKERS BEAT THE LAKERS". So how did they get it wrong as well?!

So whether you produce proof or not I'm going to continue to look into it, just to satisfy my own curiousity.

But out of principle, I won't admit to something just on someone's word. SHOW ME THE MONEY as Cuba would say.

To quote the late, great Bob Casey when a bunch of hooligans were chucking Duracells, hot dogs and nickels at Chuck Knoblauch, "Now, quit this!"

How does anyone know that Saunders would be a "great" recruiter? Because people want him to be? He has never had to recruit on any kind of level (unless GV Luth college counts 30 years ago) so I am not sure why people think he is the obvious answer...
He was an assistant coach for a couple years at Tulsa. I believe they are a D1 program.

Kind of funny.

Tulsa, rated by Street & Smith as the 59th best cbb program in history, made the NCAA tourney both years Flip was an assistant there.

Then they didn't make the NCAA tourney again until Tubby Smith took over.

I know its just coincidental, but still kind of funny.
