Mav Ahanmisi has made a good living playing basketball. I'm not ripping on him but he was probably a less than average Big 10 basketball player.

By the way, remember when you were butthurt because I had the audacity to say that someone you think will finish ~35th in the Big 10 in 3PT% is an OK shooter? You clearly do, which is why you're here crying about everyone one of my posts. You should have just taken that L. I moved past it.

As I said in an earlier post, I realize Ben was behind the 8 ball with Eli. However, the argument that we are going to lose the Caledonia kid because he's rural is silly. I don't even know if it was your original argument. It seems like it might have been because it's terrible.

The truth is that kids choose school for hundreds of different reasons. At the end of the day, Ben is going to have to lock down some local kids. The excuses of them being "rural" or them "wanting to get away for school" is are tired. I heard it for years with Pitino and it was tired then too.
 

I finally listen to the 1st Coach Johnson’s interview on KFAN podcast with Guard. Ben was very specific about wanting guys with very high BB IQ and guys that can shoot. He is not as interested in guys that are just athletes. He wants his players to be students of the game.

That may explain why he might not have fought so hard to keep Gabe. And it may explain which MN HS kids he is going after.

He pretty clearly wanted to be in Iowa - those were his final two schools - and he had a very close relationship with the new coach at Iowa State.

Both facts. Not an excuse. If I come here and say this kid is "too rural" or this kid "wanted out of the city" about every 2022 recruit, then come at me.

This is one kid. I just said I don't think he was ever too serious about the U.

TJ Otzelberger was Eli's older brother's coach at SDSU. I think this has a lot more to do with TJO than it does Iowa State. There has been a longstanding family relationship here between TJO and the Kings. I'm not really sweating this.

Yep. As soon as TJO left SDSU the older King did a year later.

I know when Richard was hired we heard it a lot about the Tyus/Travis/Vaughn group--that he didn't have enough time. Don't know the difference in time now compared to that group though.

I'm not talking in circles. I'm wondering if people's provincialism is going to prevent them from enjoying recruiting success. It didn't end up being much of a concern with PJ and the football program cause it translated into wins in 2019.

Case remains to be settled for Ben. But, as a fan, if Ben starts winning and builds an identity for the program, I could care less if we ever get another in-state kid again. I like Minnesota kids and hope we can get more of them. But I'm not going to be pissed about his hire if he wins with players from other states.

Aligbe is the starting safety for Minnehaha. He is a good football player and a great athlete. He is not a great basketball player but is physically gifted.

Agreed! But he was introduced and talked about as someone to keep kids home. That is what the hire was based on. So if he can’t do that—that is a concern. 0/1. We’ll see how it goes.

Umm. . .you realize that the post I was responding to wasn't yours right? The post I was responding to was an exchange with SpottedMuskie where he said he wasn't surprised we lost out on King because he is from Caledonia. That's an implication that people from outstate MN aren't going to pick the U.

As far as King. Sure. If you say that he personally wanted to go to a small town campus, I have no reason to not believe you. Obviously people pick something about the schools that they like. I don't think him narrowing it down to two Iowa schools is really proof that he was going to go rural.

My point, which wasn't even directed at you, was that we can't continue to chase our tails with excuses for coaches. People did it for years with Pitino.

Owen was a D1 QB had he gone that route, Noah is a better bball player and could have been a good safety. Eli is the most athletic and could play either Bball or football at the D1 level.
 

Don’t see Aligbe on their football roster. Wasn’t on the field two years ago when they beat BSM to go to State?

It may also explain why his first two non-native commits were from elite schools (William and Mary and Lafayette). And his other non-native transfer recruit started out at Vanderbilt. Remember that Ben himself started out at Northwestern so he may have a thing for the more cerebral athletes.

We will see. Most people from the board seem to be from metro area. They really can't relate to the mind set of kids and parents from out state. But hey Alexandria's Treyton Thompson will be going to the U. We will see, outside of Lee from Byron, every other '22 recruit from Minnesota is metro area.

Agreed. The problem is Coyle's introduction of BJ was all about getting MN kids to stay home and then he said he would figure out the whole calling time out thing later. That means he thought BJ would get the MN kids. So based on Coyle's knowledge of BJ he felt his strengths were going to be in recruiting MN and wasn't so worried about the coaching spectrum of things, so people are going to worry when his strength is not looking great out of the gate. You may not care about in-state kids, but BJ hasn't been sold to people as getting out-of-state kids. Remember the other theme has been you may not see why BJ should be a B1G HC, but Coyle knows what he's doing and you're just a rube, so shut-up. Well if Coyle's stated case starts falling apart, then so does that theme. Granted there is a lot more to play out, but every time this sort of thing happens people are going to be getting concerned.
