Daniel Edozie a Gopher commit, per Amelia UPDATED (11/26) Edozie signs with Iowa St

I'm almost thinking that a better recruit (Nigel Hayes?) at the same position wants to commit, so we basically told Daniel we wanted to go in another direction.

I really didn't think a JuCo recruit made sense for this year. That would put him in the same graduating class as Coleman, Osenieks, Eliason, Dre Hollins, and Walker. That's 6 of your 13 scholarship players in 1 year.

Or we never really offered him (Tubby supposedly has the ability to be a little confusing in that regard - ask Joe Coleman) and this is a way for both sides to save face. Who knows. Maybe he read this thread and decided he didn't want to be here any more. Maybe Tubby only intended to offer him a walk on spot an it got misinterpreted.

This has been an odd situation from the beginning tho.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was another misinterpretation of an offer issue either. Nothing Gopher related really surprises me anymore though.

That's a good point, I never thought of that.

So we go recruit a new Fab-5, or in this case, a new Super-6???

They have had this fuzzy offer thing going on. Ask Estan Tyler, Chad Calcattera, Shelby Moats and yes Joe Coleman. I doubted this from the start.

What's the story with Tubby's fuzzy offers? I haven't heard about this before. Thanks guys.

Tyler's family talked of an offer from Tubby and the others seem to have similar stories. At one time it was reported each of them had offers. If that was true I do think they would have all been Gophers.

Amelia blog: Edozie planning to de-commit?

So what happened? No one is saying anything for certain (and Daniel Edozie’s coach, Mike Marquis has not yet returned my call), but it appears that some wires were crossed in the recruiting process and the two sides might not have been on the same page.

Go Gophers!!

After winning the NCAA Tourney Tyus, Rashad & Reid will go pro.

Apparently this is not the first time this has happened. Why?

Seriously, does this happen elsewhere, is this common? It seems like it happens here once a year!

Maybe it's a bit of a publicity stunt by the kids to get some recruiting attention, but this one just did not make sense from the get go!

My guess is Edozie read this thread and has since decided to decommit. Good work guys!

But seriously what a bizzare series of events. Even as one of Tubby's biggest supporters this is a head scratcher. I'll be curious to hear more about this...

Marcus tweet: "Mutual decision between the #Gophers and junior college PF commit Daniel Edozie for him to look elsewhere. Still 3 scholarships left."

Go Gophers!!

It was fun while it lasted!

Who is going to be the first dip*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# to say we missed our or got rejected by another player.

brings up memories of Jimmy Williams

for me, obviously not the same situation as he was a coach supposedly offered a position only to quite his current job and then be told that it wasn't available to him but strange that Tubby shows a history of doing this type of thing with players as well.

Did it ever occur to anyone that possibly, just possibly, Tubby found out something relative to this situation and is too professional and classy to divulge so the National Enquirer Reporters here on GopherHole could throw dirt on a kid?

Don't forget Jimmy Williams thought Tubby offered him a job too.

You do your homework before you offer. Just another stupid chapter in "This is Our Best Shooting Team Ever". They just don't seem as a staff to be on the same page or have a plan of attack in recruiting.

Ryan James tweets suggest that there was no communication issue with the scholarship offer. Jirsa went to watch Edozie play this weekend and after those games, a "mutual decision" was made to part ways.

Reading between the lines, it appears that Edozie did not perform well this weekend and Jirsa got on the phone to Tubby...and a decision was made to pull the offer (similar to Nate Garth in Tubby's first year? don't remember the details there).

I remember when there was a confusion when Joe Coleman was offered, he had contacted me and told me he committed to the Gophers, and was out celebrating with his family and we did a story on it...and it turns out, Tubby hadn't offered him yet.

I also recall Trevor's offer - he had said he didn't know Tubby had offered him until months after.

Mutual decision? I don't know about that. Was his decision to commit last week a mutual decision?

"and"

I hadn't posted here about Edozie, but in private conversations have thought this sounded like a case of the young man jumping the gun. Perhaps some of this is due to a writer poking around for an update, getting one & sharing it, and then things snowballed with others who believed it as well.

It doesn't look good, but my take is this has little to do with the Gophers staff and more to do with the young fella and media.

I do firmly believe Minnesota should work the JUCO angle hard for a PF / back to the basket / interior type that can board and defend. It's a need for 2013-14. There aren't a lot of possibilities that will could make a nice impact in a year, but there are some.

Not doubting he said that, but there was a span of just 9 weeks from the time he quit Marquette to "go the JuCo route" and the time he committed to Minnesota.
