Daniel Edozie a Gopher commit, per Amelia UPDATED (11/26) Edozie signs with Iowa St

This signing is mind blowing. His HS and JC stats are St. Olaf level at best. We better get Foster/Hayes/Chris or Reid next year.

If by Chris, you mean Chris Perry, he committed to South Florida within the last few days.

In fairness to Edozie, the YouTube video of him was done while he was still in high school. As someone who didn't play much basketball before coming to the US, it's entirely possible that he's significantly improved over the last year.

On the bright side, other bigs won't fear losing pt to him and he'll only be here two yrs. Until a solid signing, I'm worried about our bigs after next year.

As Stan said a few posts ago, I wonder if the young man didn't mistake an expression of interest for a scholarship offer and jumped the gun by contacting the media. At least this is what I would like to think. This is the kind of an offer that should be made next July if Tubby were to decide not to bank the scholarship. Guys who average 5 pts a game for a juco aren't difficult to find.

Not sure what to think. He did have an Iowa St. offer out of High School.

He did NOT have an Iowa State offer. From Chris Monter's Q&A:

Gopher Hole: Who offered you out of high school? I thought that I had heard that Iowa State had offered you?

Daniel Edozie: Iowa State did not offer. I did not have an offer from them. Schools like Fresno State, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Washington and Idaho State were recruiting me.

Go Gophers!!

Luckily for us we have all these great talent evalulators and recruiting experts on the Hole letting us know that this player is a waste of a scholarship a year before he even shows up on campus.

If I understand the bolded portion correctly, those schools were recruiting him but did not offer? Did he have any other documented offers besides us coming out of either High School or J.C.?

in an attempt to stay positive, this is the take I am going with. All of the 2014 and 2015 recruits will be able to see the minutes available to them immediately. Having to compete with entrenched starters will not be something other schools can use against us in recruiting battles.

I meant Gavin Schilling, I keep thinking his first name is Chris.

I absolutely hate this response. You can't have it both ways. You can't rip fans for questioning this recruit with the "Tubby is a better basketball mind than fans," retort, because, essentially every other D-I coach in America AGREES with the fans, because none of them have offered him a scholarship. Your argument also doesn't make sense because fans aren't questioning it because they have done a professional evaluation themselves - they are questioning it because of the lack of interest in other coaches during the last two years.

We don't know how this will play out, but there is nothing foolish or stupid in fans questioning this signing, especially given the timing of it.

On the surface this makes no sense. This guy sounds like a generic big body for end-of-game, cannon fodder duty. Are you telling me Tubby can't find a HS kid in MN who could accomplish the same thing?

Maybe we're all wrong, and this guy will be a diamond in the rough. Then again, maybe Tubby landed his extension and just doesn't give a bleep anymore.

Bottom line - signings like this just keep upping the ante on 2014. Tubby has to land at least 1 of the "Big 3" from MN - if he goes 0-for-3, it's going to get ugly.

Which both ways am I trying to have it? Nothing at this time is known about how this recruit will work out. You watch a youtube clip and you have made up your mind whether he can play or not. With regards to timing if this guy was signed in the Spring the reaction on the board would be the same. Has nothing to do with the timing.

You're trying to point out that this signing shouldn't be questioned by fans because they don't know as much about basketball as Tubby. However, at the same time no other D-I coach has offered him a scholarship. So you can't rip fans for their reaction by saying they know nothing about basketball, because the vast majority of D-I coaches (which I will assume you agree know a lot about the game) don't think he deserves a scholarship either.

Are you telling me Tubby can't find a HS kid in MN who could accomplish the same thing?

Do you have anyone in mind? Would you rather have this kid for 2 years or Reggie Lynch for 4?

If we've reached the point where we sign a kid that can't play because he'll only be here for two years than were are in bad shape.

Maybe Edozie is a 4.0 student a la Shell to help our APR... Or whatever that number is that we need to maintain.

Name one piece of "Tubby disinformation" I've spouted. I'll be waiting.

The most recent one is that Jerry Kill offers kids sight unseen like Tubby, even though 6 of 7 of the fall football verbals camped with Kill

Luckily for us we have all these great talent evalulators and recruiting experts on the Hole letting us know that this player is a waste of a scholarship a year before he even shows up on campus.

If you like lazy recruiting, then you are probably in hog heaven. All of the other great talent evaluators (and Division 1 and Division 2 coaches) missed this diamond in the rough as well

You can't really be this stupid, can you? You are talking about commits. Your previous "point" was talking about offers. Do you understand the vast difference between the two? Jerry Kill does indeed extend many offers sight unseen. This is an inarguable fact.

Oh, but he'll argue anyway.

Just might be lazy recruiting. Recruiting has been trending down, people see this guys stats, no offers, watch his little video clip and decide this is a poor recruit. The staff seen something in the guy and made the offer.

The reaction to this recruit IMO shows more abut how people feel about Tubby at this point. If this was on the football side a lot of people would be falling all over themselves to praise Kill and his staff for finding this "diamond in the rough" and getting in on the guy before anyone else.

Holy Christ. So now, according to you, not only is Tubby smarter than every other coach in America, but he's the only one who actually puts in effort to recruit kids? Give me a frikkin break. Do you actually believe your own B.S? You think 330 D-I coaches get to where they are in this ultra-competitive field by being lazy?

Just admit that this kid is a bigger risk than most recruits. It might turn out well. It might not. But please stop trying to convince us that Tubby is smarter and more hardworking than every other D-I coach. Nobody is buying it. Just admit he took a risk based on something he sees in the kid, and it's OK to be skeptical of the signing until proven otherwise.

Admitting this doesn't mean you don't like Tubby or aren't a Gopher fan.

Not sure how you got this out of what I posted. Being skeptical of the signing is one thing to utterly dismiss it as some have done a whole year before the kid shows up on campus is another. No one here knows anything about the player or why no one else has offered. If he didn't commit early he might have or still might have other offers coming. If this signing was done in Tubby's first year admittedly would be curious but the reaction would be quite different.

Thinking I am tyring to defend Tubby is completely wrong. I am not a Tubby backer nor a maroon and gold color glassess wearing Gopher apologist.

The difference is that in basketball you have 13 scholarships and in football you have 85.

It is becoming increasingly more & more apparent the Gopher program needs something resembling a stellar 2012-13 season. Any chance at landing Tyus Jones and/or the other Minnesota studs, IMO, hinges on a season that shows significant upward mobility. We don't need a third straight disappointing, "fart around" kinda' season.

Tubby and these players are capable of a special season, but it needs to get done on the court. That, only, is what might convince top-tier kids like Jones the program is truly on its way to legitimacy. That's the only way we have a snowball's chance of landing Jones. I don't care that the Kentuckys, Dukes, Michigan States, North Carolinas and Kansas' of the world are our competition for Jones. If we don't get the truly elite local talents like him -- especially 6 years into the regime -- IMO it's an indictment of the program and doesn't bode well for the future, no matter how it's spun. And I say this as someone who views himself as "still in Tubby's camp."

Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
