Daniel Edozie a Gopher commit, per Amelia UPDATED (11/26) Edozie signs with Iowa St

BOOM!! scools12 you just got served!

Holy Christ. So now, according to you, not only is Tubby smarter than every other coach in America, but he's the only one who actually puts in effort to recruit kids? Give me a frikkin break. Do you actually believe your own B.S? You think 330 D-I coaches get to where they are in this ultra-competitive field by being lazy?

Just admit that this kid is a bigger risk than most recruits. It might turn out well. It might not. But please stop trying to convince us that Tubby is smarter and more hardworking than every other D-I coach. Nobody is buying it. Just admit he took a risk based on something he sees in the kid, and it's OK to be skeptical of the signing until proven otherwise.

Admitting this doesn't mean you don't like Tubby or aren't a Gopher fan.

Be nice dpodoll....calling someone stupid does not enhance your argument.

You can't really be this stupid, can you? You are talking about commits. Your previous "point" was talking about offers. Do you understand the vast difference between the two? Jerry Kill does indeed extend many offers sight unseen. This is an inarguable fact.

On the surface this makes no sense. This guy sounds like a generic big body for end-of-game, cannon fodder duty. Are you telling me Tubby can't find a HS kid in MN who could accomplish the same thing?

Maybe we're all wrong, and this guy will be a diamond in the rough. Then again, maybe Tubby landed his extension and just doesn't give a bleep anymore.

Bottom line - signings like this just keep upping the ante on 2014. Tubby has to land at least 1 of the "Big 3" from MN - if he goes 0-for-3, it's going to get ugly.
He really needs one of the big two. Vaughn or Jones or it should get ugly.

Something just seems really weird about this whole thing...

Amelia reported the story, but her story doesn't have any sort of quotes or information from Tubby or his staff. It's all from Edozie saying he's committed here. Maybe that is the case, but you'd have to figure that Tubby or somebody from within the program should have been interviewed, saying things like "we're excited about this commit," etc. etc.

Instead, we only have quotes from the recruit himself. Just seems really off. Tubby has shown he'll go after guys like this, but not this early in the recruiting process. And with no confirmation from within the program, I'm just as quick to think Amelia botched this report than that Edozie is an actual commit.

We'll see, I guess.

It's illegal for coaches to comment on any specific recruit until national signing day. You won't find a single HC commenting on any verbal commitment until the LOI is signed later this Fall.

Go Gophers!!

He sounds interesting...

6-foot-8 240 pounds and from his coach "Daniel runs the floor better then most guards and can finish with the best of them."

• AAU coach Donley Minor on his former player, 6-foot-8 forward Daniel Edozie, who gave a verbal commitment to Gophers coach Tubby Smith on Wednesday: "I heard he really enjoyed his visit to Minnesota. Daniel is a very, very hard working kid in the classroom and on the court. When Daniel was in the ninth grade, he couldn't even make a layup. He improved a little in the 10th grade, but basketball wasn't his passion. It was football. In the summer after his 10th grade year, Daniel devoted himself to basketball and by his senior year we could see he was a D1 prospect. He didn't like any of the offers he was receiving, so we decided to send him to Tyler junior college in Texas to continue his development. I thought he was going to commit to either Montana State or San Jose State after last year, but he wanted to get his AA degree first. Daniel is a strong defensive player and rebounder. He has a nice mid-range jumper, but still needs work with his back to the basket. Daniel runs the floor better then most guards and can finish with the best of them."

Just like I'm sure it was "illegal" for anybody at NASA to comment on where the movie studio was where they filmed the moon "landing." The truth will come out.

I hope this is a joke. I lived in South. There are plenty of people who think like this.

Jon, I know you post quite a bit about the recruits. You might be interested in this "raw feed" from the Tyler CC website. The Tyler team is playing Kilgore. Daniel is the player farthest away in the back of the 2-3 zone defense they play. (Seems like the easiest way to identify him. Also, I think he and the point guard are the only ones not to wear white sleeves on their left arm.) It you fast forward to about the 20 minute mark, they introduce the teams and the game gets going. Heavy on the "raw feed". http://www.ihigh.com/tjc/broadcast_216126.html?silverlight=1

Thanks I will check it out when I get to a faster connection.

Not playing this game; it obviously takes an offer to get a commitment. Please provide examples of Kill providing offers sight unseen. You are obviously a very angry person who lacks the rudimentary skills necessary to frame an argument. Hence, my earlier comment about your view of obnoxiousness = knowledge; I've been around the block too many times to buy into it....

Minnesota will be at:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bartow (Fla.) High School tomorrow to talk with defensive back Vontarius West.

Maybe they'll offer him on the airplane on the way down. Have they offered him yet, DPdoll?

I know this is slightly off topic, but someone mentioned earlier about finding an MN player similar to this guy. Whatever happened to that Akolda Manyang kid? Didn't he reclass to 2013? I know he had baggage, but just more curious about him because he looked like he had some good potential. And where did Woodard end up? Thanks

There has been a lot of speculation that Manyang will have a challenge qualifying because of grades and his multiple school transfers. I haven't heard where he plans to play this season. I don't believe Woodard has made his choice yet.

Okay, thanks for the info. Maybe both of these guys will have to go the JC route and could be options down the road. Both seem to have enough talent to play in the Big Ten, especially with some JC time under their belt.

This will likely be the case. Pretty sure that is the plan for Woodard, but I'm not 100% sure. I believe Manyang is down south now and is class of 2013. May go juco route as well. Both are more than talented enough to play for the Gophers in my opinion.

Daniel Edozie absolutly comes out of left field. Who saw this kid coming?

Why wouldn't he sign??...Minnesota is the only "major" Division I school showing any interest.

What role is he going to have in this program? Let's see...next season there is a major hole at the PF spot (PG: Hollins, SG: Hollins, SF: Oto, PF: ???, C: Elliason), but I would hope that Tubby has a better answer than something called Daniel Edozie. Unfortunetly, that's what he's giving us. I feel like he sat down with an assistant one day and had this conversation:

Tubby: "Trevor graduates this year...boy, I suppose we need a power forward next season. Ok, is there anyone out there that will sign with us tomorrow?"

Assistant: "Coach, there is this junior college guy named Daniel Edozie."

Tubby: "What are his stats? What is he ranked nationally? Hell, I don't care about any of that, I never do. Do you have any video?"

Assistant: "Yes, I have this YouTube thing."

Tubby: "Good enough. Bring him in"

Who is this Woodard you guys are referring to? If it's Graham Woodward then I doubt he goes JUCO considering he has Major Conference offers in Wazzu and Penn. St. plus other good offers like Gonzaga and Butler. If you're talking about Johnny Woodard from Duluth East didn't he graduate last year?

I believe it's Johnny Woodard they're referring to. Yahoo lists him as class of '12.

That's who I figured too and that's exactly my point. Unless he reclassified he would have already made his decision (which I can't seem to find out what that was).

Woodard is at San Jacinto CC in Texas along with Gopherhole's favorite player, Zach Lofton

Amelia Rayno twitter:

"Word on the street is that #Gophers' JC recruit Daniel Edozie will soon de-commit"

That is interesting, that's a quick turnaround, and especially considering his options, so to speak.
