I guess this means we offered. Amelia's tweet:

"JC forward Daniel Edozie has verbally committed to the University of Minnesota. He called Tubby Smith this morning, he said. #Gophers"

Go Gophers!!

I am anxious to hear what Tubby's Fan Club President, jamalo, has to say next. :horse:

So are we out of the Nigel Hayes sweepstakes? This one is a bit of a head scratcher for a fall recruit.

last year 5ppg, 5 boards a game, 49% fg% not good for a big, less than .6 blk per game, 67% from the line and less than one assist per game for a 18-12 juco team. Sounds like a stud to me! THESCOUT!

thanks for providing us with your blog and twitter info, we were all waiting on pins and needles for this information. The previous 20 or so Shameless plugs were insufficient .

His video on Youtube (google his name and you'll find it) makes him look like a borderline D2 player. Slow, unathletic, bad form on his shot, slow release, etc.

Head-scratcher to say the least. Trying to remember my feelings of Mav, Nurumbi, and Wilson when they committed. I think they were similar.

Would much rather have banked the scholly for the 2014 class but then I remembered that Tubby and his staff would probably still be recruiting them so it doesn't really matter.

Best of luck to him and I certainly hope he proves me wrong but this doesn't pass the eye, ear, and nose tests.

Are you talking to me? If so, what are earth are you talking about???

Normally I side with the coaches who know more than I or others do...but this one seems a bit odd. Seriously, we were this guys only big school offer...he would have waited to the spring for us...this is a head scratcher.

I think he thinks Amelia is really Nadine or vice versa...

I'm underwhelmed with this recruit. However, Tubby seems to go get his "muscle"/power forwards (Mbakwe, Ingram, Edozie) from the juco ranks. You need bodies in the Big Ten...I just wish more skill was attached to these same bodies.

So are we out of the Nigel Hayes sweepstakes? This one is a bit of a head scratcher for a fall recruit.

We have 4 open scholarships; Mbakwe, Ingram, Welch, and Williams -- So Hayes could still be an option...

Just wanted to clear up that Mbakwe is head and shoulders more skilled than the latter two that Tubby has secured...I only referenced Mbakwe because of the juco link.

When all is said and done, who will have a better Gopher career. Aliou Kane, Ngen Nurumbi or Daniel Edozie?

New Gophers Commit Daniel Edozie Details His Decision to Commit to the U

http://www.gopherhole.com/news_article/show/182105?referrer_id=331171

Daniel Edozie, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound power forward from Tyler (TX) CC, became the second Minnesota Golden Gopher verbal when he committed to head coach Tubby Smith today. Gopher Hole.com caught up with Edozie to learn the latest on his decision.

Gopher Hole: What was the main reason you decided to commit to Minnesota today?

Daniel Edozie: Three factors. The campus had everything I needed to help my reach my career. Two, coaching staff and history. Tubby Smith, of course, is well-known. Three, I loved everybody. I loved the environment and atmosphere that the coaches and the players provided.

Gopher Hole: What other schools were you down to when you made your decision?

Daniel Edozie: I was considering pretty much Minnesota. Minnesota had been there from the start and it came to at.

Gopher Hole: What were the other schools you were considering?

Daniel Edozie: Oregon and Oklahoma. Minnesota just stayed there through the whole time.

Gopher Hole: How would you describe yourself as a player to Minnesota Gopher fans? Unfortunately, since you are a junior college player, a lot of people haven’t really seen you.

Daniel Edozie: I am 6-8. I’m 240. A lot of people say that I am strong. I am strong and athletic. I am a hard worker. I do the extra little things to help the team win.

Gopher Hole: What things are you continuing to work on to improve yourself as a player?

Daniel Edozie: To be honest, to get in a little better shape. Also, post game and hook shots. My face-up 15 foot game. My mid-range game, I am still working on it.

Gopher Hole: Had you planned on deciding this early or to be honest are you a little bit surprised that you made your choice quite so early?

Daniel Edozie: No, I am not really surprised at all. I knew that I was going to make a decision soon. I was just going with the flow. I considered Minnesota very highly.

Gopher Hole: When did Minnesota start recruiting you?

Daniel Edozie: Early in July and they started coming down in September in the open period.

Gopher Hole: What have they said to you about your role for next season?

Daniel Edozie: All I know is that I have been told that they were in need of a forward, so whatever it takes. I wouldn’t know my role until I get there.

Gopher Hole: Have you seen much of Minnesota on TV or did you know much about Minnesota before they started recruiting you?

Daniel Edozie: Yes, I did know a little something about Minnesota. I heard that they made it to the championship game of the N.I.T. last year against Stanford. I saw them a little during the season last year.

Gopher Hole: Had you ever been to Minnesota before your visit?

Daniel Edozie: No. I hadn’t.

Gopher Hole: What all did you have a chance to do during your visit?

Daniel Edozie: I meet the coaching staff and players. I got to go around the campus andsee what it had to offer. Everything you would do on a normal visit, eat and hang out with the coaches.

Gopher Hole: What has the reaction been from your friends and family?

Daniel Edozie: I haven’t told my family yet., but I talked to my coach and he was happy for me and congratulated me.

Gopher Hole: You are a California kid. How did you end up at Tyler?

Daniel Edozie: I wanted to get out of the state, personally. Get away from home and get the out-of-state experience and also play at a high level and experience better competition. I’m not saying that there isn’t competition in California. There is. I just wanted to get an out-of-state experience and play at a high level.

Gopher Hole: What are the expectations for you guys at Tyler this year?

Daniel Edozie: I think that there are a lot of expectations. We have four sophomores and two transfers. We expect to go deeper this year than we did last year. I want to make our team as focused as I am to get to our dreams and reach our accomplishments as a team

Gopher Hole: Do you feel that deciding now takes a weight off your shoulders that you can now just concentrate on the season and not have to worry about recruitment?

Daniel Edozie: Correct. It takes a lot of the pressure off and allows me to work hard and better myself for the next level at Minnesota.

Gopher Hole: You didn’t average a lot of points and rebounds as a freshman. How much of a better player do you think you are now than you were last year?

Daniel Edozie: Last year, it was like taking a crawl as a baby and now that I know the system and what the expectations are and how the coaches want to use me and how I have gotten comfortable and worked hard in the summer, I am expecting to be at least 15 and 10, if not 20 and 10. A double-double every game.

Gopher Hole: Have you thought about what you would like to major at Minnesota?

Daniel Edozie: I want to go somewhere in the medical field, health sciences.

Gopher Hole: You were a qualifier out of high school, right.

Daniel Edozie: Yes, I was.

Gopher Hole: Who offered you out of high school? I thought that I had heard that Iowa State had offered you?

Daniel Edozie: Iowa State did not offer. I did not have an offer from them. Schools like Fresno State, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Washington and Idaho State were recruiting me.

Gopher Hole: You thought that by going the junior college route you could get some bigger schools to recruit you after two years in junior college, right?

Daniel Edozie: Yes. To play at the highest level I could possibly play.

We wasted a possible 2014 scholarship on this guy?

The big body, banger inside is yesterday's game. I would rather have a big who can shoot, defend multiple positions and isn't a project. Bright side a better recruit than Riley Dearring. lol

I'm not too happy with this one. Seems like another Andre Ingram type get. There goes another 2014 scholarship.

Geese....He may turn out to be good but no big name schools recruited him. So Tubby can't get the 4-5 Star guys? Not what I had hoped for.

I think I'd rather have a possibly undersized white guard with a slow release, but I'll have to trust Tubby on this decision.

I'm a backer of Tubby's recruiting, but this is quite odd for a fall recruit. Let's hope Tubby found a diamond in the rough. I was really hoping that we'd only take two players in this class, so we could have four scholarships for 2014.

Also, does this mean we gave up on Foster and Hayes? I think Ohio State is the clear favorite for Hayes, but he still definitely enjoyed his visit to Minnesota. Hayes' visit to tOSU is this weekend, so it's puzzling that we offered Edozie before Hayes' Ohio State visit.

Also, we just got a commit from one of Foster's best friends. It's not unreasonable to say that we would be his favorite right now. I hope we continue to go after both Hayes and Foster despite Edozie's commitment.

Daniel Edozie
6-foot-8, 235 pounds
Power Forward

Scouting report: Instant impact-type player at Division I level. Big, strong body with soft hands and range out to 17 feet. Superb lateral quickness and unreal athletic ability. Well above average ball-handler for his size with ability to attack the rim and finish with both hands. Rebounds at an exceptionally high level at both ends of the floor. Dominant defensive force on the blocks but isn't affraid guard the ball on the perimeter. Intelligent, hard-working individual who has the ability to make his teammates better and elevate the level of play while on the floor. Should project as a top 5 lottery pick after first season at Minnesota.

Haha, Mrs. Edozie, I just hope this is a case where the staff didn't really offer and your son jumped the gun.

Dr. Don, I am excited about this signing because I think he will be another under the radar signing like Mav, Chip and Ingram!!! I'm glad that we locked him up before the FCS schools and Auggie Tech, etc., started pursuing in earnest.

It just means the following:

1) Tubby is tired of recruiting
2) Tubby got his extension with an increased buyout
3) Tubby has moved on to Plan F or G

Pretty good numbers for a Juco!! Needed to lock him up before Auggie Tech and Hamline came calling.

This is absolutely embarassing; Tubby giving everyone here a big FU and a majority are applauding him. Where is the voice of reason Gopher4Life (God rest his soul) when we need him? He called the Monson situation a year or more in advance of everyone else.

Wow.... I'm usually a glass half full kind of guy. All I can say is "In Tubby I trust????...." My favorite part about what he's going to be working on is getting in shape. After watching his inspiring video, that's a good start.

This signing is mind blowing. His HS and JC stats are St. Olaf level at best. We better get Foster/Hayes/Chris or Reid next year.

Unfortunately, Tubby just blew one of those scholarships on a guy where even St. Olaf wasn't interested. Again, a total FU from Tubby, as he now has his extended money and increased buyout. Even Tubby disinformation agent DPdoll can't put a positive spin on this
