Contract Extension for Fleck

Minimal distraction. (y)

Both sides wanted it. (y)

Fleck's agent gets it done again. Leverages other school openings and strikes while iron is hot.

As mentioned, hope he could feather in a nice increase for assistants as well. There are only so many wake boats on Minnetonka that a man needs.

Fleck is in year 5 and this tells you how much our program has suffered.

"In his fifth season, Fleck is 10th already in school history in games coached (53) and sixth in wins (32). Fleck's .603 winning percentage is third best among the 11 Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games at the helm, trailing only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, '45-50)."

Damn!! I take a power nap at lunch and wake up to this?!?! Hope I’m not asleep and still dreaming.
Great news to hear. Thanks to the admin for getting this done and thanks to PJ for wanting to be here!!!!

Now, let’s win the damn West!!!

Me too!

I think this is a good move on the part of Coyle and likely a committment from the UM.. Maybe this will be the push needed to nab a couple of new recruits this week.

I don't think these things really keep anyone around if they really want to go.

But I also don't like to think about that stuff and PJ has certainly done an outstanding job / I'm glad to hear PJs comments.
There’s always a way out nowadays, but gotta think this makes it a bit harder to leave, I like that this signals the intention by both the school and PJ to be together for a long time. Love to see it.

I could not be more proud of our coach.

Anything in the press release about him being the most attractive coach in the Big Ten west according to a recent poll?

Got to help with re recruitment.
Yeah that's usually the reason for the small extensions every year.

I'm sure that has plenty to do with this too.

If you're going to a school for the culture of the coach..... You want to know he's going to be there.

Because I know everyone on this board has been waiting for my opinion, here it is. 😉

I like this move. Despite what the crusty old curmudgeons in this town think, he is a very good coach at this level.

Ski-U-Mah!
Row The Boat!

Any chance you could take a power nap during the Iowa and Wisconsin games?

Love to see this! PJ has brought stability and consistent competitiveness to the program. He was just what we needed 5 years ago. He is still learning as a coach, there are issues he needs to improve on (game management for one), but there is no reason he can't continue to grow as a coach...

I think you're right, but these extension/buyout increases just make it more onerous for someone to hire him away.
And those looking to hire him have to say is he worth all the money they have to pay for a buyout or can we find someone else just as good or better for a lot less money. Yes, elite programs could easily afford to pay that money but even a rich man doesn't want to pay too much for something. We may think Fleck is the greatest coach since Vince Lombardi but elite programs are not that impressed with one 11-2 season.

I had a friend who said to me jokingly congratulations on the Gophers 2-2 season in 2019, implying the games against Penn St, Iowa, Wisconsin and Auburn were the only ones that "counted".

I do think that his two best seasons are impressive to the elites. He won 13 and 11 games at Western Michigan and Minnesota?! Wow that's impressive because those teams suck.

I'm guessing the buyout until November 2022 is very high, just like the last extension. This essentially takes him off the table for this coaching cycle, probably not beyond that.

True but still not a long track record.

I wonder how long until we get details on the increased pay, buyout and assistant pool? Maybe that has to wait for regent approval, but have to think we may know in the next week

Deep breath, wow, maybe, just maybe I (we) will get to see our Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Rose Bowl before I (we) are all gone!
