Contract Extension for Fleck

Any word on the updated buyout?

Not that I can find, but as much as people hate on Coyle's press conferences, he is rather intelligent. I don't see any way he does this extension now without getting the big buyouts back in place for this year and next. It's an astute move. Coyle is well aware of all the helmet jobs that are open this offseason.

I like the vibe of this music for an end of third quarter thing perhaps everyone screaming gold when it comes around in the song
It really fits the gopher as well.

Have we ever change up the music I nominate that song

this may be a matter of semantics - and bad reporting -

but the media is reporting this as "a new 7-year contract."

What it really is - is a revamped contract with a 2-year extension.

the old contract ran through 2026. the new contract runs through 2028. that is two years.

so, a more accurate headline would be

"Fleck receives 2-year extension with new financial terms."

I thought he only had a year left on his contract and that's why local media haters were saying he'll probably leave after this season. You can't even trust these people for accurate reporting I guess.

Also, we don't know what actually is in the buyout terms. That could be stiffer than we assume.

There you go, someone, already answered this question while I was typing.

What has changed:

Buyout much greater --> Less chance he goes and if he does go it gives us the financial footing to hire a top level coach to replace Fleck. 10 million vs 5 million and goes down slower.

Salary increases to average to slightly above average for a coach that in everyone's mind is taking Minnesota to the ranks of being relevant. 4.6 - 5.1 million

Commitment to the University of Minnesota when others speculate he is gone --> This will help with recruiting. I expect a banner year in 2023 recruiting (best year yet).

RTB forever!!

“How greedy is PJ Fleck?” - Jim Souhan

“Students will probably go hungry at the university now because of Fleck.” - Jim Souhan

“He’s rich? I don’t care. He’s not as fit as I am.” - Jim Souhan

Where she's his new salary compare with other B1G coaches?

And - taking a cynical approach - this also gives Fleck some insurance in case the team takes a step backwards next year, when they could potentially lose 10 of 11 starters on both offense and defense. Who knows - maybe all the backups are going to step right in and they won't lose a step - but with that much turnover, it's normal to expect a transition period.

Leave to a Twin Cities journalist to say something like that. I think they just say things like that to get Gopher fans riled up. What a tool.

Based on this list, the new salary will put him 5th. Right behind Tucker and Franklin and just ahead of SCUT FROST and Ferentz! That can't be without purpose. Love it!

I wonder how long until we get details on the increased pay, buyout and assistant pool? Maybe that has to wait for regent approval, but have to think we may know in the next week
I'd like to see something like Kill had were his assistants pool had to be top half in the big ten

Looks like they added another $350K to the assistants pool with this new deal. Not sure where that total sits now and where that sits in the Big Ten.

EDIT: If Rossi continues at this year's current pace, have to think he is due a very nice raise to keep him. Could also see Harsymiak (sp?) leaving for a lower HC job as I know he was a finalist for at least one last year.

My guess is that it was put out to them as a new 7-year contract because it may be exactly that. It would be odd phrasing otherwise. If the U released a statement calling it this, that is what it is.

per The Daily Gopher (link):

The new contract raises Fleck’s annual salary from $4.65 million to $5.1 million. His buyout is $10 million before Dec. 31, 2022, then drops down to $7 million following year, $5 million the next year, and $4 million the year after that. The contract also makes available an additional $350,000 for assistant coach salaries. Fleck’s new deal also includes the following incentives:

  • $150,000 for winning the Big Ten Championship
  • $100,000 for winning outright or tying for the Big Ten West division championship
  • $100,000 for being named a National Coach of the Year
  • $50,000 for being named Conference Coach of the Year
  • $100,000 for winning eight regular season games
  • $100,000 for winning nine regular season games

I hope that $350k increase in assistant pay goes to Rossi. Then they should take $75k from Sanford’s paycheck and give it to Kenni Burns. Then they should give everyone a COLA/inflation increase, also out of Sanford’s paycheck.

There are a number of big time head coaching jobs opening up and this is a key year. I think if Fleck wanted to leave this would be his best time to do it. To build our program we need someone to stick around for a long time like Wisconsin and Iowa did.

Anyone can see Fleck gives us an edge in the modern NCAA. He is the guy who can get it done here.
I raise a glass in agreement. Prost!

Looking yesterday, there are something like 75 guys that are freshmen or sophomores on the roster. Mix that with anyone that returns and we should be ok. It will be back to the we are young list of phrases.

I assume Harasymiak is gone within a year or two and the word from Burns was that he was going to take Wilt and Simon as DC & OC respectively.

Yes you're correct. I just reread the announcement. I'll take him through 2028 and beyond for that matter.

So much for all the media people stating that he was going to leave after this year due to lineman shortage etc. If people do leave, we just have to row the boat and push harder.
