Bowl Game Projections?

The head of the Bowl Selection Committee is Mike Nealy, a U of M graduate and a native Minnesotan. Mike is a strong supporter of the U of M.
As an alumni of the U, when you say “U of M”, I still think you’re referring to Michigan. 😬

Yeah I think I want Utah to win either way.

I think it’s odd anyone thinks Maryland would get picked over Minnesota. Literally no metric.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Minnesota is picked over Iowa by a bowl.
There has been a lot of hyperbole on GH as to who travels better Iowa or Minnesota. I wonder what the numbers are. The last 2 years stats would have been skewed by COVID.

I think Minnesota projections to Pinstripe has more to do with that Maryland was there last year than Maryland being more worthy of a higher bowl than Minnesota.

Yeah but that should flop Maryland and Wisconsin (who beat Maryland) not Maryland and Minnesota

Everyone putting Wisconsin in Arizona bowl, MN in NY, Maryland in Charlotte

Should be MN in charlotte, WI in NY, maryland in AZ

just for sh*ts and giggles, I looked at ticket prices for the Pinstripe Bowl.

the way the field is laid out, it looks like a lot of the seats are at an odd angle to the field - almost like a reverse MetroDome.

so, in that sense, there are fewer "good" seats because they're not parallel to the field.

from what I saw, there are seats available in the $60 to $80 range, but those are mainly end-zone or bad angle seats. for a better view, looks like most seats are in the $100 range up to $150 or more.
and that's list price - not including handling fees, taxes, and the "F*ck you, I'm Ticketmaster" fees.

I'm not well versed on the secondary markets, so I suppose there are ways to find cheaper tickets.

I was shocked at some of the prices for the bowl last year considering the awful setup. I really wanted to go but just couldn't swing it financially, and honestly, watching it on TV, I'm glad I didn't.

One of these years I'll get to go to one. Not this year - I'm going to Nashville this weekend.

My list of concerns about MN being selected to the Pinstripe Bowl:
  1. Weather
  2. Inferior opponent compared to other bowls
  3. Crap stadium setup
  4. Cost of lodging
  5. Likely low attendance that adds to the perception that MN doesn't travel
998. Limited selection of attractive shows on Broadway right now
999. Getting mugged on the subway, lol...
But a selling point is that Jack won’t be there.

Rumor is rose bowl may want penn state anyways even if Ohio state available

Which is interesting.
This likely puts Ohio state in the orange bowl.
This means that one of the New Year’s Day Florida bowls can choose a different conference rather than big ten. Could end up with Wisconsin in quick lane after all.
I would think that would likely leave Mn in pinstripe anyways as they won’t get bumped to quick lane and were out west last year

Illinois to Nashville or Charlotte. Purdue in Florida.
Whoa. Now that's some interesting news for sure. Man, there's a lot of balls in the air as usual. That would introduce a ton of variance into everyone's predictions.

Maryland to Guarantee Wisconsin to Pinstripe Minnesota to Mayo. Discussion closed.
I've seen that predicted in several places, and it certainly makes sense on the surface...but for whatever reason some people think the Mayo wants Maryland.

yeah

It’s also interesting how two things could play together.
To me. Minnesota to the pinstripe only makes sense if it is a given that Maryland doesn’t want to go west and the conference doesn’t want them to either.
In that case, that demand by Maryland combined with Ohio state in the orange will be ROFL when it ends up putting Maryland in Detroit

Really? Per my handle, I currently live here - 25 years and counting.

When did you move to FLA?
Where in NYC did you live? I’m looking for a specific neighborhood - as your hyperbolic statement regarding the subway sounds like a 👿.
When did the unfortunate assault happen to your father?
Born and raised in Flushing, Queens. Saw every crime imaginable on my block other than murder. Home invasion, armed robbery, rape, theft, etc., and this was a “better” neighborhood in Queens. Moved to FL over 19 years ago. Should have moved to FL 30 years ago.

Don’t want to re-hash my father’s assault or continue to hijack this thread.

I live in Queens and have for 23 of my 25 years; personally, in my experience, I wouldn’t consider Flushing one of the better Queens neighborhoods, ala Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Astoria and Douglaston.

Crime has continually dropped since its heyday in the early 90s, per FBI Crime Statistics (making it one of the safest big cities in the country annually) and the article below sums it up well, putting the spike we’ve experienced since COVID into perspective.

Sorry again for Dad’s attack.

I also know people with kids who live in Queens and seem to be doing fine.

My brother and his family live in Manhattan and can't seem to bring themselves to leave. Never heard any mugging stories from them.

My wife lived in the West Village for 8 years in her 20s and 30s and said she never was mugged or felt unsafe.

I lived in Manhattan first 2 years in Spanish Harlem when to be white there was unique (no issues there either), now gentrified like many neighborhoods.

Moved to Queens because I really like Kevin James 🤫

NYC seriously why does the B1G screw Minnesota every year and send the gophers to the worst possible bowl game
IMO, we’re still viewed as a step below the other programs in our tier, such as Wisconsin and Iowa - we stunk for so long it takes a long time to erase it. Hoping 5 more years of success and /or another major bowl win erases it for good 🤞

Minnesota travels just as good as those 2 teams do

The “Minnesota doesn’t travel well” narrative is such a self-fulfilling prophecy. Minnesota gets shafted in bowl selection so Minnesota fans don’t travel. Bowls say “see, Minnesota doesn’t travel.” Rinse and repeat.

The only advantage Pinstripe has over Charlotte is that there are probably way more Gophers living in the NYC area than in the Carolinas.

Citrus Bowl a few years ago
Outback in 2019

How were they screwed those two years?
I’ll play. Penn State, a team that the Gophers were pretty familiar with in 2019, got a NY6 bowl game ahead of the Gophers that year.

But, I think that is actually beside the point. I think the point is the Gophers usually get screwed on their bowl game. Perhaps not every single time, but there is a long notorious history of this.

Last year was pathetic also Purdue Wisconsin Maryland all jumped ahead of Minnesota in the bowl order Minnesota beat all those teams. A 7-5 Penn state team that lost its final 5 games last year was rewarded with a New Year’s Day Outback bowl game lol

So imagine stinking as long as Illinois. They clearly will fall to the Detroit or Pinstripe bowls, right?

Do we travel well or have transplants and snowbirds show up in droves at the games? I think that was the case in Arizona last year. That may contribute to the “don’t travel well” narrative and sour selection committees. A lot more tourist money in visitors than locals showing up.

One can hope Schnauzer Claus.

Although a review of their Bowl History going back to the 80s shows a couple of Rose and one Sugar FWIW.

My response included nothing regarding how well a team travels, I avoided that on purpose. That used to be the narrative Sid bandied about, but I think the bias runs much deeper ala 84-13.

I should have included the Minnesotans tend to think they’re getting the shaft, evidenced by your query.

I don’t think there’s a cosmic plan at work, just some bias regarding Gopher Football.
