I live in Queens and have for 23 of my 25 years; personally, in my experience, I wouldn’t consider Flushing one of the better Queens neighborhoods, ala Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Astoria and Douglaston.
Crime has continually dropped since its heyday in the early 90s, per FBI Crime Statistics (making it one of the safest big cities in the country annually) and the article below sums it up well, putting the spike we’ve experienced since COVID into perspective.

According to NYPD crime stat data, in 1990 there was a total of 527,257 crime complaints.
