Bowl Game Projections?

I was upset last year when we dropped all the way to the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, crap venue and crap production value. This year nothing will surprise me, if I had to bet on it I'd say lowest possible slot, which would be Pinstripe. I've seen projections from Pinstripe to ReliaQuest, with the majority saying Music City. USA Today just came out.....Pinstripe.

I think the music city makes sense, as Kentucky is a good option for them and Iowa and Kentucky played last year and they'll take us over Wisconsin (I assume)

I thought I heard last year that Coyle lobbied for us to go to the Guaranteed Rate Bowl?

I thought I heard Coyle mention it in an interview, but I could be remembering wrong.
 

With the number of times I've seen the Gophers dissed at bowl selection time, I'm expecting Pinstripe Bowl. If it turns out better, then I'll be pleasantly surprised.

He may have said he did, but did he actually? I doubt it. That's what any AD would say after getting the shaft. They tried to make it seem like it was a good destination, Phoenix area has lot's of snow birds, on TV it looked like the attendance was pretty sparce.

Last year teams that we beat head to head jumped us, they said h2h didn't matter, bs about quality W's and L's meant more. Just watch, this year it'll be "deciding factor was head to head"!
 

It's selfish of me, because I won't be traveling to the game, but I'm thinking about the quality of the opponent more than the destination city.

I want to get another preview of next season, and I'd like to see the Gophers with Kaliakmanis at the helm vs a quality opponent one more time.

That, and beating a good team might help our (slim) chances of ending with a ranking in the Top 25.

The head of the Bowl Selection Committee is Mike Nealy, a U of M graduate and a native Minnesotan. Mike is a strong supporter of the U of M.

I believe the lobbying was done only after it looked like the Pinstripe Bowl was the likely destination. If the Music City, Outback, or Las Vegas Bowls had been in play....obviously those would have been preferable.

That's what I recall as well. That Coyle and Fleck wanted to go to Phoenix rather than NYC last year.

Maryland.

Charlotte is ACC HQ and Maryland was in the ACC for many years.

Tons of flights between Charlotte (American Air hub) and the three major airports in DC/Baltimore area (two of which are hubs, and BWI is a Southwest "focus city").

Covid was a factor in this? Easier opponent? Can't remember what the reasoning was.

Maybe thinking NYC was more likely to cancel a bowl game due to covid?

IIRC, it was because:
1. More people would be likely to go to Phoenix in December than NYC.
2. There are lots of transplanted/retired/snowbird Minnesotans in the area.

We will see. Could be, but our conference record and overall record is better than Maryland. The ACC HQ is moving from Greensboro to Charlotte next year. We are a better match for FSU than the Terps. I went to Minnesota and took graduate classes at Maryland but I only root for the Gophers. ACC? I always preferred NC State to Maryland.
 

Really, think about it. Who wants to go to NYC and get mugged on the subway? Not I said the little black hen. Plus you can’t carry in NY without going through a background check.

My list of concerns about MN being selected to the Pinstripe Bowl:
  1. Weather
  2. Inferior opponent compared to other bowls
  3. Crap stadium setup
  4. Cost of lodging
  5. Likely low attendance that adds to the perception that MN doesn't travel
998. Limited selection of attractive shows on Broadway right now
999. Getting mugged on the subway, lol...

Yep, it was. Terrible venue, lighting was crap! Plus they had the roof open for the pregame and it was raining, field got wet and players were slipping all over in the first half. Plus, the game started at late, like 9:30 local, I'm old and don't want to stay up that late....At least the Pinstripe Bowl is an early game.

Yeah. Anything that starts after 8pm central is kind of annoying

While the weather and the stadium aren’t really appealing about the pinstripe it’s usually a decent opponents and not a terrible time slot in my opinion
