Bo Ryan and Richard Pitino post-game handshake

Yep, you guys have the football pedigree of Alabama and the basketball history of UCLA. Ask any Badger fan under 35 and they'll tell you. I grew up in Madison, dude, and UW had a long, long run of mediocrity or just plain awfulness in both sports up until the early '90s. Camp Randall was half filled and basketball tickets at the Fieldhouse were the easiest tickets in town. The last 20 or so years of success are the outliers in their otherwise unexceptional history.

What is it with this "you guys"? Do you not know who Bronko refers to? I didn't pick the 20 year mark, he did. I just thought it was funny that he picked a timeframe that he thought was long enough, but it blew up in his face. You need to laugh more, it's the best medicine.

As a lifelong Gopher fan and hater of all things Wisconsin, this whole thread just seems like a bunch of butthurt fans making a big deal out of nothing. At what point in the shotclock is it OK for an opposing player to take a shot when they are in a game that is out of hand, and at what point differential is the game out of hand? If it's OK for us to do it up 11 with :42 but not them up 21 with :21, what is the point-to-time ratio that is acceptable? And how does any rationale fan think a backup who hardly ever plays would be considering this at this point in the game? I'm sure Bo didn't tell him to score or not score, he just put em in and let em play.

Would you say the game is out of hand up 11 points with 42 seconds left? Would a rational coach run the clock down and take the violation?

Would you say the game is out of hand up 23 points with the ball and the ability to run out the clock?

I would argue up 11 with :42 left the game is probably over, but if anything it benefits the winning team to hold onto the ball. Up 23 or whatever they were up...I would say the game is over and it doesn't matter what they do. Especially with backups in.

I see why Richard was frustrated...his team just got smoked in the biggest game of the year to their biggest rival.

The football run began in '93, so 21 seasons. I was off by a year. The basketball run began in '97, so 18 years. Seems like the timeframe I picked was right on.

Ha, pardon me for doubting your Gopher fan bona fides, pal.

If the tables were turned and Kendall Shell shot the 3, we would have thought it was awesome. This thread is laughable.

It would behoove all the Gopher fans in this thread to shut off your computers for tonight, take a couple deep breaths, and come back tomorrow.

It would behoove all the Wisconsin trolls to leave Gopher fans alone. You beat us handily today and made every effort to not only beat us, but shame us as well. Now go away.

Ha, pardon me for doubting your Gopher fan bona fides, pal.

I have season Gopher football tickets and went to about 8 home basketball games and 5 home hockey games this year, and have 2 degrees from the U of M. I have and will always be a die-hard Gopher fan (and Badger hater). I also have perspective, and from my perspective this event was a non-issue. I guarantee if the tables were turned we'd be excited that Kendell Shell drained a garbage time 3 and not concerned about how the Badgers received it.

Would you take a shot up 11 with :42 left and an expiring shot clock? Every coach would say yes. You would look like a major bonehead if that came back to bite you because you did not. Up 23 with the opportunity to run the clock out is a whole different story.

Everything you said had nothing to do with it. Could have run out the clock with a 23 point lead is completely different from beating the buzzer with :42 seconds left and only an 11 point lead.

This post proves you have little comprehensive capacity.

No I fully understand the point you are making, I just think it is laughable. If a third party came in here and said the same thing no one would take them seriously. Its ok for a starter to shoot when the game is over (unless you have Trajan Langdon or Reggie Miller if you have an 11 point lead with :42 left, the game is over) but for a Freshman reserve who has played in 8 games all year to jack up a 3 from a iso is just turrible. It is the B1G tourney Quarter finals. If you aren't ready to play for 40 mins thats a you problem.

But this is all accepting your bogus assumption that Hill was thinking about anything other than the fact that he was on the court for one of the few times this year, had the ball and a good look with the shot clock still on. How can you be mad at a freshmen for playing basketball during a basketball game? If the final score was 80-57 would you really feel differently? It is obvious you are pissed and are looking for any excuse to deflect your rage away from your own team and their disappointing performance. That's fine, we have all been there, but this outrage is still dumb.

+1 I don't blame the kid at all for shooting. Pitino is just mad - and rightfully so (but misdirected) - that the more Wisconsin piled on the lead at the end, the more it hurt our NCAA chances, and that last 3 was just the last straw. Even with how poorly we played, there is no reason we should have let it get that far out of hand to a team we beat by 13 and lost to by 8 already this year. But that's on our guys, not some stupid benchwarmer on the other team.

Also, I don't think the game was reffed unfairly, but it's pretty clear the B1G tourney refs are reverting back to the old way of allowing a lot of physical contact, clutch and grab, etc. which will help Wisconsin in this tourney but hurt them in the NCAA's (as I think is often the case).

Yes I would take a shot in the first scenario. In the second scenario, with backups in, I would just let the kids play. You're missing my point - as the opposing coach neither scenario would upset me. As Bigdsrip pointed out, Hill is a Freshman who never gets to play. If Ben Brust would have been in and attempted that shot I would feel differently.

I don't really care that much one way or another. I am simply disagreeing with the folks who think that's good sportmanship. It really isn't. You can sugarcoat it as much as you like. If Hill gets to write home to nana and let them know he made a meaningless shot at the end of a game.....good for him. Most decent coaches would call their team off with that lead and the ability to run the clock out. Especially with the defense conceding.

It was a meaningless, uncontested shot. Most of all, it's a test of opposing class. In this case.....it was a failure.

As I already said.....it doesn't really much matter to me. I simply am saying that most coaches would call their teams off in that situation. We are lobbying for an NCAA bid. Running up the score does nothing but make things look worse. I can understand why Pitino was a little ticked off. Same reason as Brewster was upset over the late game two-point try several years back. What's the point? Want to let your players get into a game and take some meaningful shots? Throw them in when you are up 20 points with three minutes left.

One team had their starters in, the other had a guy who has played maybe 20 minutes all year jack up a 3 that happened to go in. Also the difference is that the UW boards didn't go crazy calling Pitino classless. Its not Ryan's fault your team quit before the final buzzer in the biggest game of your season. Nice try though.

Not sure that I really agree with a lot of the griping in this thread, but just have to point out that if by starters you mean guys who haven't started all year, then yes you are correct. The Gophers definitely had "starters" like Maverick Ahanmesi, Daquein McNeil, Malik Smith, Charles Buggs, and Mo Walker in the game. Those guys have combined for a huge number of starts this year: 0.

I have never in my life met a Badger fan who does't acknowledge that we were straight booty for the vast majority of our history. That doesn't mean we can't be happy with the last 20+ years now where we have turned it around. You dismiss 20+ years like it is a flash in the pan, which is disingenuous at best.

I'm guessing you don't know any Badger fans under 30 then. In my very short time just being around Wisconsin fans, I can tell you there are a good amount who think both football and basketball teams have always been at the top.

I hate Badgers and their fans as much as anybody, but this kind of discussion really ticks me off. I am so sick and tired of us giving an absolute garbage performance against our rival, and then whining about how our rival isn't very nice to us. This isn't me saying that I like the way Wisconsin acts with a late lead (I don't), but I am a lot more upset with the Gopher players for not giving us dick for effort tonight than I am at Wisconsin for running up the score.

Nitpick, but I think Malik Smith started a couple games after Josh Gasser stepped under Andre Hollins while he was shooting.

Well, that just isn't true. Go ahead and be frustrated that we couldn't make a shot, that we couldn't finish, that nothing bounced our way, that our best player started 0-12, that Malik continued to look like a student who got picked for a shooting contest during a TV timeout. But don't knock today's effort - our boys were fighting hard, even with everything against them and basically no shots falling

+10000

Effort was not the problem at all. Forcing some shots and shooting 30% FG, 62% FT was the problem.

Today I am a MSU fan. I hope Grinch's team gets more than one foul called on them in the first half and brust can't find the basket. And hopefully Harris hits a three to put them up by 20 and izzo keeps his foot on the gas. Oh wait his last name isn't ryan.

Since I can't pull for the Gophers today, I'm going with the team with class too. Hope Sparty puts it to the BADgers. Don't care if Bert is gone, hate their football team too. Still stinks of Bert.

I guess I am not a huge fan of some of Ryan's over the top antics but he does win.

I'm tired of us being the victim in these anti-Wisconsin threads.
Just stop them if you want to get back at them.
Beat them.
Finish fourth place or higher in the conference for a decade.
Then we won't be as concerned about what other coaches due with refs or say to us after the game.

Exactly.

They have the football team of our dreams. Same with their basketball team. Same with their pro football team (owned by the city instead of some guy from NJ). Their MLB team plays in the National League. They cut Favre, we signed him. They are known for beer and cheese.

I quit hating them a long time ago (well, when we signed Favre) and have admitted I wish my teams were like theirs.

Whining about a 3 pointer heaved up in a game makes us look even more foolish.

No, you're right. I thought of that after I went to bed. My bad. Either way though, his comments were false.

In the larger picture, the point is that this happens with Bo and Wisconsin with some regularity. Even this morning, when I mentioned it in passing to my wife - a casual basketball fan - she said, "Isn't he known for that?"

The amount of talk on the 3 pointer was a bit much but there probably wouldn't have been any talk about it if it wasn't for the handshake deal. The original point was there was an exchange between Pitino and Grinch. That is where the whole thing started and what was possibly said and whether Pitino should have been pissed or not. My guess is that he was mad as hell that his team didn't show up, then WI ran up the score a bit and Pitino finally realized what a d-bag Bo Ryan really is.

Sums it up pretty nicely, I think.
