Best Minnesota season in 23 years

If you believe that finishing in the bottom half of the Big 10 every season since was hired is acceptable to you then Tubby should absolutely be retained. I personally do not find that acceptable. IMO, Flip would take this job, land the "Big 3" and get the new practice facility pushed through...just one fan's opinion and hope.

Solid win against a defeated team. I hope for a solid win against a better team tomorrow.

I fully expect to be stuck with Tubby for at least another year.

Nothing else to say about it.

I'm basically on the same page. Amazed by the outright giddiness by some on here after beating a UCLA team that was a bigger disappointment to their fans than even the Gophers have been to Minnesota fans. That Bruin team, according to most of their own fan base and indeed the media, is a mess.

In other words, my feelings on Tubby aren't swayed in the least by a win over a bumbling UCLA team that was playing extremely short-handed as it was.

Please refrain from such talk. DPDoll and Dean will be upset.....

Let that sink in for a moment. And nearly all of you want to reward the coach who led this effort with a pink slip.

Good lord man. You really know how to bring out the losers=haters. This has become a very funny thread.

Go Gophers

Probably because it was our first official tourney win in over two decades. Even if we came into the tournament as a 4 seed as some had hoped for and beaten Montana in the first round by 20, it still would have been cool to finally get that tourney win, even if it was expected at that point. I can't believe that there are still some trying to diminish the significance of last night's win, as if anything less than a 20 point win over the higher seeded team, the PAC-12 champs, would have been a disappointment.

Sorry but there is no chance Flip lands any of them.

Not diminishing anything. The team has massively underachieved and beating that UCLA team does nothing to change that. Like I said, feel giddy about it all you want. But that doesn't erase the previous two-plus months of bad to horrible basketball that Tubby and his bunch brought to us. Make a long run and then we can talk about it more. Until then, one game doesn't overcome 16 games of mess.

Am I bummed that they won that game last night? Absolutely not. But I'm keeping things in perspective. And I'm not going to let Tubby off the hook magically after one tournament win against a team in even more turmoil than ours is.

These are all facts.

Tubby underachieved this year.

Tubby has never finished in the top half of the conference.

Tubby will be the coach at Minnesota next year if we beat Florida.

If Tubby doesn't beat Florida it's possible he will be fired.

There you all go, I summed up this thread in one post so you all don't have to read 5 pages of trash.

You're welcome.

It was a 20 point win if we had to claw our way to a win I'd feel the same way, but UCLA won the PAC 12 I don't think Abrams would've made up for 20 points. The gophers are out of Big Ten play and can get out and run now, the style of play they thrive at.

It was a nice win. A very nice win. Tomorrow will be A LOT tougher. If they can keep up the momentum, I will be more than pleased. But the UCLA (and indeed the Indiana) games are the anomalies, not the norm. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they got beat decisively tomorrow. Could they win? Absolutely. It's just as likely they lose and lose badly. They're too unpredictable; no one ever knows where this team's head or heart is at and we haven't known for a long period of time now. Tomorrow is another crap-shoot. And a lot of that has to do with Tubby, whether beating the Pac-12 champs or not.

Look, I'm not a fan of The original post either, but we should enjoy last night and enjoy the next game. Last night's game reminded me a lot of the victory at Illinois. You know it's a good night when Coleman is hitting 10 footers and getting dunks in transition

The conclusion I draw from this site is that we'd prefer a coach go 0-16 in the non conference, 18-0 in the big ten, and lose in the first round of the tournament.

Tubby has underachieved in the Big 10 and the tournament. The quick dismissal of the awesome non conference success just baffles me. If those games don't matter, why in the world play that? Maybe college basketball should scrap the non conference and the tournament since they don't matter.

Clem finished above .500 in conference exactly one time in 7 (legitimate) years. One time. So glad he never had a message board to say the tournament meant nothing and only his big 10 record did an he should have been fired.

I can understand why some of you want to condone cheating. It's because Minnesota's track record looks even worse without claiming ill-gotten gains. But despite your feelings on the subject, the fact still remains that this is the first NCAA Tournament win in 23 years, and thus the Gophers' best season in 23 years. The man who gets to put that victory on his coaching record is Tubby Smith. I love it. Let the hate flow through you.

What is massively underachieved? How many B1G should they have won? Keep in mind they have not won more than 10 Big 10 games in the last 16 years and they have only won more than 10 Big Ten games twice in the last 30 years. But somehow you feel they should have won 4 or 5 more Big 10 games this year, in a year the Big 10 was probably stronger than it has ever been. Would you have been happy if the Gophers would have won their last two regular season games and maybe the NW game but lost in the first round the NCAA tournament?

This is fair argument. However, I think some of us are looking at the entire 6-year results of Tubby's tenure and are not satisfied with the progress. My biggest beef with Tubby is he doesn't seem to be a dynamic recruiter nor does he seem to enjoy the process. It doesn't appear we're sitting well with the Big 3 and programs like MN cannot thrive without keeping a high percent of the top in-state recruits. I do feel that Tubby is a very good person and represents the U with class and dignity, though.

Agree with this point. The problem with cheating is you don't get a chance to see who the real champions were. Who took second to Lance Armstrong without Google's assistance? Tubby has done it the right way I will give him that.

Bingo. You bring in a big-name coach, who gets paid multiple millions of dollars and he hasn't once finished above .500 in the league in six years. Add to that all this bluster he himself spouted about this being his "best team" and it nets seventh place in the conference. Yet, according to several folks on here, we should be celebrating our butts off because we actually won an NCAA Tournament game against a program in shambles. Sorry, this kind of track record doesn't cut it all things considered imo. If others disagree, fine. I happen to hold a coach so celebrated when he got here responsible for the product he's shown us so far. And that product simply isn't cutting it.

As for the recruiting, he's gotten plenty of good, in-state recruits. They just haven't done much under him. He's an okay recruiter, not a good one. And certainly not a great one. No doubt he's done a nice job representing the university on a public level (with the possible exception of the Jimmy Williams fiasco). But his teams are completely predictable. Great non-conference, below average to just plain bad conference records and a 50/50 shot at the NCAAs after all is said and done. That's the pattern. Some folks are happy with it, some are not. But that's where we're at, like it or not.

So you would have been happier if they had won the last two games to get them over .500 in the conference and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament? The toxic attitude of the fans has hurt the recruiting of the Big Three more than Tubby Smith being the coach.

No. I would be happy if there was some kind of clear progression happening on a yearly basis. As in moving up the conference standings. There hasn't been. Not for six years. And if you want to go with the whole "it's the fan's fault" that we aren't doing well with the big three, knock yourself out. The fans have been supportive as heck of those three, going as far as chanting their names when they visit the barn. If we lose those three, it won't be because of the fans.

The last three years we have beaten Louisville, North Carolina, Indiana when they were number 1 in the country, UCLA and Michigan State when they were a top 10 team in the country. I find it very funny how hypocritical some of you are to dismiss the UCLA win because of an injury to one of their best players when you give Tubby no slack for losing Al Nolen two years ago and Trevor Mbakwe last year. Seems to me you want to have it both ways.

Not sure how that attitude impacts recruiting, but I agree about the first part.

I think on behalf of the University of Minnesota we should file a petition to only play the conference schedule and conference tournament. Nothing else matters.

Sorry, our fan base is sickening and sucks. We have some of the worst fans in the country in all sports.
