Best Minnesota season in 23 years

If Tubby were to stay, I would just like to see some evidence of him not being "luke warm" about being here. Dancing after the badger game was pretty good evidence, but the way he carried himself in those three losses to end the season were not what I wanted to see out of a coach who still has some fire in his belly. I think Tubby overall is a good coach. I wouldn't call him great (although in the national eye, if you have a championship then you are great), but he is going to have to improve recruiting if he wants to finish out his contract. Another recruiting year like 2013 and this team will take a nosedive.

Having said that, I think in Norwood's mind, this win last night bought him another year. If he beats Florida, he'll have my approval as well. Show me you can still get your team up for a big game Tubster.

If NT has a hire in his back pocket that might shock the big 3 in state and get them to sign here great, otherwise our best shot of getting any of them is to stick with the guy that has established a relationship with them. We are a long shot right now, if we bring in some unknown coach we will go from long shot to no shot in a hurry with the big 3.

If a slam dunk is a Shaka Smart type hire, I doubt he has that in his back pocket. Also take a look at this years top 35 players on where they played in high school and which college they sing with? Then tell me how many of the 3 will sign with the instate school? A scorer like Vaughn is one and done. Tyus will probably play 2 years. I would be happy getting Reid and Macura, and hopefully Illikanen the following year.

I will repeat what I have typed on this board many times before...only because it seems that so many rubes forget time and again that MN is not a good school to coach at...we have the worst facilities in the big ten and I would argue our facilities are not in the top 50 of all programs (top 100 if we didn't have the Barn and its history).

No up and coming coach would follow Tubby in MN...Tubby was promised a practice facility and support by the Admin...he has gotten neither...so any promises made to a less known non-Championship winning young coach would be even more hollow. Yes we have a new AD & President...but what exactly have they done so far except for talk?

Until we have a plan, funds and a shovel in the ground on upgrading the BB facilities, I believe the job at MN is not a good one and unless Flip is willing to play the role of savior in our rendition of Goldy Gopher Superstar, firing Tubby would be the silliest thing in the history of MN coaching firings...and thats saying something considering our history of silly coaching firings!

You have no way of knowing that.

Face it guys, you can't win with Minnesota fans. There will always be something to complain about. Minnesotans have always been and always will be complainers. Enjoy watching your team and enjoy the debates, neither of them are going anywhere.

I've heard fans in New York complain once in awhile also.

Holtz came here when the facilities were only blueprints. Unlike with Maturi, if Teague told me facilities were on the way, I would believe him.

He was already our coach next year....all this victory did was shut the Gloom and Doomers up. The people that called themselves fans even though they wanted the Gophers to lose so they could call for Tubby's head. Good coach and good victory. It's TubbyTime again.

When did you decide to replace Haters with Gloom and Doomers?

Silly was not in the firing but when and how the firing took place...ie one year after an extension and upping the buy out and then firing during or after the next season. So Monson, Mason & Brewster come to mind. It is silly to extend a coach and then fire him and we are still paying off these fiascos...no since in adding another to the mix.

It sounds like we are on the same page. The silly part was extending them before canning them, not the decision that they had to go because they weren't performing well enough.

Let that sink in for a moment. And nearly all of you want to reward the coach who led this effort with a pink slip.

I wouldn't call a team that underachieved to the level that this team has the best of anything.

I don't mean to diminish the win, the guys played very well last night. That was great to see after the last 3 games. But that UCLA team should not have gotten a 6 seed after losing their best player just a week ago. Everyone knew that they had a streaky Muhammad and a bunch of garbage. The gophers were a 3 point favorite as an 11 seed that backed into the tourney.

Beating a team that you should beat should not do anything to prevent Tubby's canning after the consistent collapses we've seen the past few years. Beat Florida and we'll talk. I'd personally get rid of him still, but don't think it will happen. But let's beat Florida first, and then we'll see where the chips fall from there!

Wait a second, one tourney win wipes away a massive underachievement in the regular season? I don't think so.

No. But 2 or 3 tourney wins would, I'd imagine. That's what really counts.

I will say that if we beat Florida and then follow it up with a loss to San Diego State, I think I'll be a little disappointed. Give me a few weeks to get over what could have been and I will be very content with the sweet 16 banner we get to hang next season.

I believe that Tubby Smith's tenure here at Minnesota can be defined by his Big Ten record. Throw out the ooc wins and losses. Pay strict attention to the conference wins vs. losses and figure out exactly where Tubby ranks as opposed to his peer coaches in the conference. Then ask yourself what the average finish of Tubby's teams have been IN the conference. THAT average conference finishing place figure will tell you just exactly how competitive within the conference Tubby has been for the number of years he has been here at Minnesota.

But, afurry91: after the reaction by Minnesota fans...the Minnesota press...and internet blogs and message sites, and even here at the HOLE just WHY would you expect Tubby to be more than ""luke warm" about being here? We kick him when he's down, when he wins it's not to our liking, we spit on him, we trash his methods, we bitgch about his recruiting as not being good...and then we bash him for underachieving with all the talent that he has put together here. Is there ANY evidence that we are even "luke warm" about him being here.

I suppose that the one thing you could say is that at over 2 million a year...he gets paid a LOT MORE than any of the other coaches at the U to take all this crap all over the state of Minnesota.

I'm not defending Tubby. I'm just kind of perplexed, confused, amused and struck by the irony of your bitch that Tubby right now is being only "mildly luke-warm about being here..."

THAT is the funniest comment I have read in a LONG time.

NO coach had better ever "just absolutely LOVE being here at Minnesota..." We have such a LONG history of administrations attempting to "fire their way to prosperity..." in the athletic department. IF a coach LOVES being here...that coach had better hold his/her cards close to their vests and not let anyone know about it. AND, any coach who experiences some great success here had BEST be checking out better offers...because the minute it goes even slightly the other way...WE are going to be calling for the head of the coach to be bought out and FIRED.

Too many of us want "blind loyalty..." and absolute FIDELITY from our coaches...but...we will cut their hearts out and throw them under the bus if we are only competitive within the conference and aren't competing for lots of glory and deep runs into this NCAA MADNESS THING. Quite frankly, my chief complaint this year is that we were not a bit more competitive within the conference and that we didn't defend the home court as well as we needed AND win a couple more road games in order to achieve a higher finish within the conference in a year when we "...woulda, coulda, shoulda... been able to do that.

I tend to judge the administrators (prexy b, badger joel macturi, prexy k and our new norwood) more harshly than most do. I figure that IF they have the power to extend...and then have the power to fire coaches within a year or two of the extension, they really don't know what the heck they are doing and they have NO fiscal integrity. I'll typically go a bit easier on MOST coaches than I will with MOST administrators. With administrators AND with coaches: I like to see what they actually DO...not what they say. For coaches: I compare them against their peer coaches in the conference. With the administrators: I wonder why the hell they are still around and so active AFTER they have retired? Now THAT situation ticks me off...

I guess fans have EVERY right to turn on coaches...and I guess coaches have EVERY right to be only mildly luke-warm about being here once we start ragging on our coaches...wouldn't you think? It's a funny, funny standard that many of us like to maintain... My standard lets me take the inventory of the administrators and I keep track of the body count of the coaches they extend and then turn around and buy out and fire. I suppose the coaches are merely tokens for the administrators. To the administrators: when the season ticket holders grow restless...just throw them another coach and they will be distracted and satisfied for a few more seasons....

I don't even know what to say to this. You are a coach at a D1 program working with 18-22 year olds. You better be passionate about your job or you are not going to succeed. Your career is judged by how these college kids perform. If you are not passionate, you think they will be? Many of these kids have not faced adversity in their athletic careers before. They were the big shot at high school. They averaged 25 points a game and won state championships. The Big Ten is a wake up call, and they need a coach to coach them through it. Not some dead weight who is just here for his 2 million dollars.

Michigan finished 5th in the B1G and did nothing in the B1G tourney. But it matters, I guess

It's the only thing that matters. Michigan should be ashamed of the season they just had.

Such expectations, were ranked number 1 and couldn't even beat PSU. terrible.

I guess I do know something to say to you about this. How did you manage to interpret that Tubby appears only "mildly luke-warm?" Perhaps when there is a fire-storm of criticism, the media and fans calling for the head of the coach...MAYBE it is a great idea to stay calm, keep working with these 18 to 22 year olds just to show them that this is part of the business of being a coach.

And, 18 to 22 year olds are NOT babies. When I was 20 I was headed to boot camp and after that a stint over-seas. I considered myself to be an adult and I was expected to be an adult. These players are NOt little kids. Just as the DI in boot camp did NOT let anyone feel as though they were the big fish in the pond...and that high school days were LONG past and that each individual was now responsible for his own actions...reactions...and conduct...and at all times to follow orders.

I have no idea if the Gophers will beat Florida. Based upon the recent past, it could go either way...but...it was not long ago that these same players beat Indiana. Florida might blow them out...BUT...on a given day, they could...beat Florida. Based upon their play last night, it would appear that a "luke-warm..." Tubby comforted them enough, taught them enough, parented them enough...cheered them up enough and held their hands enough to play a lot better than the Pac-Ten regular season (minus their 2nd leading scorere) champs.

Of course, maybe UCLA's coach is only "mildly luke-warm about being in LA and that was just too much for those young 18-22 year old Bruin Players to be expected to deal with...obviously it was ALL the fault of their coach....

Bring in smart...try to flip things around...but just make sure that who ever coaches the gophers realizes that they always need to wear a happy face and talk about how much they love being exactly where they are...no matter of how the press...the fans...the administration treats them...

Congratulations on going to boot camp. Here's a cookie.

Solid win against a defeated team. I hope for a solid win against a better team tomorrow.

I fully expect to be stuck with Tubby for at least another year.

Nothing else to say about it.

U said we don't need "dead weight collecting 2 million a year" that is why I responded the way I did...were u not implying that tubby was the dead weight?

I was assuming that any coach we have here will probably be making 2 million dollars.
