All Things Royce White Thread UPDATED 10/25: Royce cut by 76ers

Royce is a good player no doubt, but he seems incredibly lazy when he doesn't have the ball.

I have wondered that too. I think it is his cerebral way of playing the game, no wasted energy. For a big guy to play 38 minutes and be so involved in the offense, (point power forward) must take a tremendous amount of energy. He is conserving energy to stay on the court.

I have seen 3-4 of his games now, he is getting better as the season goes on. Much smarter, fewer turnovers. He hands the ball to Babb and then sets up a wall for the shooters. Very close to moving screens but I have not seen it called. Royce seems more under control from body language (attutude). A few games Christensen made a point of talking with him when Royce was getting down. No bad body language the last few games.

doubt tubby would have let him roam or bring the ball up the floor..
and no way tubby would let him 'dog' it on defense.

for 270 lbs, i agree 40 minutes against a team like Uconni is a 8K calorie burn..
seems like they should save him a bit and let him operate in the low block.

Royce on the perimeter takes a big guy out of the middle.

]The fans in Iowa State Cyclone land should be so thankful that Joel Maturi took control [/B]and handled the Royce White debacle while he was a Gopher. Without Joel's heavy handed involvement and needing to make an example out of such a troubled student/Athlete like Royce White, Minnesota would be in the NCAA Big Dance and Iowa State would probably be in the NIT. Joel had to use his AD powers to take control of the situation and to discipline his way verses trusting his 2M per year coach named Tubby Smith to handle his team and personal discipline.

From an Iowa State perspective, thankfully, Joel was able to handle it his way, forcing White out of school since he had becoming disenchanted with his future and his ability to fit into the exclusive club of perfectionists who supposedly wear maroon and gold. Royce learned his lesson and is now able to lead his team on national TV.

It makes me sick to watch RW in an Iowa State uniform. I am happy for him and his team of course, but I would much rather have Royce leading this group of Gopher Athletes in the NCAA. Ahhh what might have been.......

Maybe the new AD will create a new vision, a winning culture, and a program that actually expects to win.

My close personal friend recently shared with me, after stealing a laptop and brawling with a sercurity guard it cost the U over 6 digits to dump Royce on the unspecting Iowa State program. Royce agreed to the transfer after his musical advisors pointed out the hip-hop environment is much more vibrant in Ames than in the Twin Cites. In a upcoming article in Rolling Stone, Royce with be discussing how he has no desire to accept the pennies the NBA is offering when he's well aware he with be the music industries next Tiny Tim.

+30

This is the first time I have watched Royce since the Tubby Tipoff a few years back. He was fun to watch. He dominated the flow of the game. He reminded me of a heavier and slower Magic. (Hyperbole intended)

Royce's pace at which he played last night was correct because of how involved he was, he was essentially their point guard and power forward which means he has to be smart and conserve. As for the NBA he is going to have to get on the Kevin Love diet and exercise program soon to transform his body to ensure a long career.

He is lazy on the court has been since high school.

For those that think he was conserving energy, you know nothing about basketball. This is the big dance for c-sake. You bust your ass and you take a two minute breather and get back out there, that's how basketball is played. You don't take it easy so you can stay on the court longer that's one of the dumbest concepts I've heard on here in a long time.

I agree.

His approach was more NBA like than anything, he played smart and at a good pace...not everyone needs to run around the 3 point arc like a jitterbug.

I watched a good part of his game last night and I watched a few minutes of one of his games earlier in the year. Small sample size, but from what I have seen I would have to agree.

Reminds me of Randy Moss. Extremely talented, but 'plays when he wants to play'.

Problem is, he wasn't playing in the NBA.

Correct he was leading a team to victory against a Big East team in the NCAA Tourny. Being stylistically different is actually helpful in sports, very few players are as cerebral as last night.

Next time the Gophers look lazy can I say they are just being cerebral?

And hockey!

The more apt comparison would be McNabb when he could still throw, not in the best shape but able to QB a team into the postseason and win.

I have not gotten to see Royce White play much this year but was interested in watching him play last night. You can say what you want about him off the court and the problems he has had. On the floor he was a total beast last night against some very good competition. I think it sure helps him that he is playing for a former NBA player who is going to use his best skill and not throw him in a box like some college coaches might. If White was still a Gopher we wouldnt be talking about the NIT and over the last two years we as Gophers fans wouldnt have as many complaints. Thinking of a front line with White and Mbakwe would be truelly scarry and a matchup nightmare.

The past is the past and hopefully Royce White has grown up and become a better person. My biggest knock on his game is his horrible free throw shooting. My goodness for a guy his size with all his skills making free throws will be huge for him at the NBA level. Being a large, physical, forward who can get his own shot that cant shoot free throws means your not on the floor at the end of games.

Chris da Hump is listed at 6'-9" and 235 and he looks like a beast. He also earned his scolly by drawing contact and shooting 75% from the line. I have no idea why Royce thought getting to 270lbs at his height was a good idea. Royce is listed at 6'-8" and he's said to be 6'-7" and shoots just under 50% at the line.

Call me crazy, but I still don't see him as an NBA player. Although, like any teams top players, if they are able to make a tournament run his draft stock could go up dramatically.

I would venture that the run ends with Kentucky.

As I said on twitter yesterday, Royce reminds me of Michael Beasley, except you trade Beasley's shooting ability for Royce's ball handing. Anyways, screw that guy.

How Christian of you.

Almost as Christian as assaulting a security guard, stealing clothes, trespassing at a dorm, and quitting in the middle of a season.

Sorry but one of the worst takes I've heard in some time, do you watch Michael Beasley? Beasley is an iso player who shoots and drives but doesn't pass. Royce White on the other hand passes, drives, posts up, and doesn't shoot real well. I really don't understand the comparison except for some similarities in their off court past.
It's also aggravating that a poster who takes such offense to people questioning a 60 year old coach who has been around a long time and is used to criticism would find is appropriate to rip into a young man who made bad decisions at 18/19 yr old.

I'm on my cell, so if some else can find the link and direct quote, thx. I hear the K stud player was asked about what its gonna be like to guard Royce and he said something like- he's nothing special. Let's see if Royce can step it up. Hypothetically, if Royce gets 30 and 12 with a team win, he jumps from just outside the NBA radar to late first, probably early second. Not really pulling for him but I'm looking forward to the game.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist on guarding Royce White: *shrugs* "He's nothing special."

Iowa State F Royce White (13.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 4.0 apg) will be a tough matchup for the Wildcats, but F Michael Kidd-Gilchrist said the team doesn't feel daunted at the prospect of guarding him. “He's not LeBron James,” Kidd-Gilchrist said. “He's not unguardable or anything like that.”

I kind of hope UK beats them, but then loses by 75 the next round.

Watching this Iowa St. - Kentucky game is really depressing. I have not watched Iowa St. so I didn't realize Royce was really this good. Hmmmmmm......maybe Tubby should have turned his head and ignored the Mall incident to keep this kid around. Royce and Mbakwe together would have been special. Royce and Mbakwe together would have been special.
