All Things Royce White Thread UPDATED 10/25: Royce cut by 76ers

I give him a 30% chance of being drafted 1st round and 30% chance he is on an NBA roster for a full season.

Do you think he is a lock? C'mon.

A lock for simply making a roster? Yes, and I don't think that is even close to a bold statement. He obviously has some red flags, but he's also smart and a smooth talker when he needs to be. When he gets interviewed by NBA teams who are nervous about those red flags, I bet they come away impressed and have much of their worries eased. People point out that he doesn't have ideal height for a power forward, and maybe he doesn't, but guess what, he's not strictly a power forward. He's a matchup nightmare. He can play on the block and from the perimeter. If he has a bigger defender on him in the NBA he's not going to be backing him down in the post, he's going to be taking him off the dribble from the perimeter. If they're big enough to defend him in the post, there's a 99% chance they aren't going to be quick enough to defend him from the perimeter. If you can't recognize his talent, I can't help you.

31.5. Oliver Miller averaged 33.1 one season in the NBA, I guess that means he wasn't overweight.
Sorry, I guess you didn't understand what I was saying. When I think of overweight I think of this not this. That's why I said "I guess overweight is a relative term." I think Oliver Miller is an exception, not a rule. Someone able to ply 30-40 minutes of a high-level high-energy sport is not someone I think of when I think of overweight.

A lock for simply making a roster?
A lock to be drafted first round this year? To be drafted 2nd round this year if he declares? Your answer to both please.

A lock for being drafted first round next year?

He's not a lock for any, but I'm awaiting your answer.

He's a match-up nightmare.

In the NBA? hahahhaha.

Talk about Royce White homer.

Royce is listed as the 37th pick in the 2013 draft, obviously the scouts believe he will come back for another year. His huge performance in the Tournament might persuade Royce to enter this coming year which the mock drafts would change accordingly. Even without the tourney he was a borderline 1st rounder in the following mock draft, with the huge performance in the tourney he is a 1st rounder. People that are comparing him to Oliver Miller, lolz! Are you serious???? He is freaking built like an ox, Miller was fat. Royce looks like a NFL tight end. He will slim down a bit but I see him being 250-260 for his NBA career. People that do not see any of this are still bitter gopher fans, let it go...

I wouldn't call him a lock for first round. I think he is definitely a first round talent, but teams might not want to risk guaranteed money on him. Definitely possible he will be a first round pick though, and if I had to guess I would say he will probably be a late first round pick, but we'll see. If he is not a first round pick, then I do believe he is a lock to at least be picked up in the second round. No guaranteed contract in second round = low risk, high reward.

Matchup nightmare may have been a little strong, all I meant with that statement is that he is a difficult matchup given his versatility and ability to play both from the block and from the perimeter. I'm not expecting him to be an All-Star the moment he enters the NBA if that's what it came off as.

Royce Homer

You're not getting my point, are you?

Likewise.

He is no first rounder. Deal with it.

As a side note: Just watched my boy Jett drain a three, I've been looking forward to watching him and STL vs State as much as watching Fred's squad take on Kentucky last night.

No, I get your point. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't call someone like Royce White "overweight" that's why I said the word "overweight" must be relative.

He is a first rounder - Did you not watch the game yesterday and hear everybody gushing over him. If he stays out of trouble this summer and plays this way next year he's a lottery pick.

OKAY! LOOKOUT KOBE.

AGREE TO DISAGREE.

Good for you. He would be more effective at 245, especially in the NBA.

I'm not alone in thinking this.
Where have I said otherwise? You initially responded to me like I'm refuting this idea, when all I was saying was overweight wouldn't be what I would say.

all I was saying was overweight wouldn't be what I would say.

I'm so sorry you didn't like the word choice. What should have I said? I have already clarified- I think he would be more effective with less weight.

From a physical standpoint, White may be looked at as slightly undersized for an NBA power forward at 6'8”, but he makes up for that with a strong, bulky frame. With that said, his poor conditioning level is a concern as he appears to be quite out of shape and overweight, which could be viewed as another red flag regarding his mental approach.

Even with the extra weight, however, White moves very well for a player his size, with excellent mobility and fluidity. He'll need to improve his conditioning to maximize his physical tools and prove his commitment to reaching his full potential on the basketball court.
_______________

He's small for a 4, he's overweight, lazy, poor shooter and free-throw shooter, plus his anxiety disorder & fear of flying doesn't help. Oh and there are the other background issues From the Barn bought up.

He's a first rounder right now. The only issue for the NBA teams to assess are the potential issues with his depression battles. Per the telecast last night he was driven to the game as a precaution against fatigue which apparently is a forerunner to the depression. In the pros- 81 games- that could be an issue. He is very, very good on court.

He's a first rounder right now.

Actually he's not.

Royce White (Highway_30) V. Doug Gottlieb (GottliebShow)

"@GottliebShow: not likely RT @evanmulville: @GottliebShow how do you feel about a NBA career for Royce White?"

"@GottliebShow: @evanmulville undersized for 4--also, to be honest--the anxiety disorder scares some NBA guys in addition to other issues"

"@Highway_30: @evanmulville @GottliebShow, Mental illness doesn't stop success, people stigmitizing it does, criticizing my game is fine...."

"@Highway_30: 2evanmulville @GottliebShow...Leave the millions of anxiety sufferers out of it. You're just perpetuating the stigma"

"@GottliebShow: @Highway_30 never said mental illness stops success, but NBA peeps are afraid of what they do not understand--these are just facts"

"@Highway_30: ...Gottlieb, out of line"

"@Highway_30: @GottliebShow never said mental illness stops success, but NBA peeps are afraid of what they do not understand--these are just facts...okay, sounds better."

"@Highway_30: @GottliebShow Being afraid of what we don't understand is actually quote natural, not informing ourselves is neglectful..."

"@Highway_30: @GottliebShow Your words carry weight, that initial tweet was like, NBA guys have a legitimate reason to be afraid..."

"@GottliebShow: @Highway_30 doesnt change the fact that when a borderline guy is being discussed, teams pass"

"@GottliebShow: @Highway_30 my initial tweet was my informed analysis, based on my evaluation and people I have spoken w/-u dont like it, that is fine"

"@Highway_30: @GottliebShow No hard feelings, we just have to clean up the talk about an already stigmatized. Not for people trying to get to the NBA"

"@Highway_30: @GottliebShow But for people who still need diagnosis and treatment ... They're more important"

When were those tweets? Just looked at both people's Twitter accounts and none of those tweets were there.

Edit: Nevermind, just had to scroll down a ways.

Yeah I think a month and a half ago. I'd imagine is stock has risen quite a bit since the tournament.

31.5. And no he doesn't play high energy all the time like most D-1 basketball players.

NBA is HIGH ENERGY x10 compared to Iowa State.

No it's not, perhaps the opposite. When's the last time you watched an NBA game? The word "defense" hardly even exists in that league.

A lock to be drafted first round this year?

Not even close

A lock to be drafted first round this year? To be drafted 2nd round this year if he declares?

No but it wouldn't shock me if he went 45-60.

First round draft pick next year, I'd say 40/60. Lot's of good players out there, he's very good, but so are 30 others guys that will be drafted in 2013.

I may be a little biased, but I think Royce may be a late first round pick. (I hope he stays another year.)

Because Fred Hoiberg played and evaluated talent for the NBA so long, I'm sure he's got a good idea where Royce is at and will advise him to make the correct decision.

And if you've followed Royce for any period of time, you know he'll take that advice from the Mayor and do exactly what he feels like doing anyway.

It seems like a great portion of your fanbase is still bitter about Royce. I'm guessing it may be similar to the Harrison Barnes situation at ISU.

At ISU, Royce has been a great person, and I think he has put his past behind him. We're very happy to have him as a member of the Cyclone Nation.

I have no idea where Royce gets drafted or when. There are obvious pluses to Royce and obvious negatives.

That said, I am absolutely still bitter about Royce. He came here to save this program with Trevor and Rodney. He was our savior. Then, he feels the need to steal clothes from MOA, assault a security guard, get suspended, then be investigated for a laptop theft and trespassing, followed by him making the choice to QUIT school and the team all including YouTube video after YouTube video and hyping his record label.

It makes it even more sickening to see the guy who quit mid season doing well and the guys (Trevor and Rodney) who never quit (And Trevor dealt with his suspension) and stuck it out playing for an NIT team or having a torn ACL.

It is obnoxious that Royce could have been wildly more successful right now than he currently is at ISU had he not been a quitter and broken the law.

I'm glad he's got his stuff figured out finally, at least it seems that way, but his actions as a Gopher and towards this team were pathetic at best.

I have massive more amounts of respect for Al Nolen, Blake, Rodney, Trevor, Ralph, Colton, Paul Carter, etc etc etc. (pretty much every player we've had except devoe for his quitting ways), than I ever will for Royce White.

Do I think he is a talented player? Absolutely and I will always wish it worked out here and am happy that he seems to have figured it out, but I will never respect a quitter and I will always give more respect to the guys who never got in trouble over one who got in trouble and figured it out later. I even give Trevor more credit as he was in trouble (we can argue what he did, whatever) but he didn't cut and run. He dealt with his suspension and got through it.
