All Things Nolan Winter Recruitment Thread (Class of 2023, Gophers Offered, Son of Trevor)

It really seems like Winter can't wait to be a gopher. Good Grief!

Per Marcus:

Winter, a 6-11 senior at Lakeville North, enjoyed his official visit with second-year coach Ben Johnson and the Gophers last week, he told the Star Tribune.

The son of former Gophers center Trevor Winter has no more visits scheduled and planned to decide "shortly after" his visit to the U, which included attending the opening football win vs. New Mexico State. His father's alma mater appears to be the favorite, but Winter has named no finalists.

"When it feels right, I'll make an announcement," Winter said over Labor Day weekend. "Still have to sit down and talk with people about what place suits me best."

Chatman, Winter, and Holy Family big man Boden Kapke are the top three seniors in Minnesota. They all had offers from the Gophers. But Winter appeared to be the last one standing when it came to getting the full attention of Johnson's staff in recruiting.

"They were making me a priority for them," Winter said earlier. "They're showing they really want me. It feels good to be wanted by them."

Go Gophers!!

After his comments about the UW visit, I'm not sure if the specific wording here is good or bad.

"Still have to sit down and talk with people about what place suits me best."

I'm maybe (definitely) reading into it too much. The me part makes me feel like it's pushback on where his parents want him to go.

Unfortunately, I’ve heard he likes the Skunks but Mom and dad want him home. Sounds like a party boy that liked the UW frat scene, from what I heard.

Why in the world would a tall kid from Minnesota want to go to the Badgers? Look at their recent or past history of failing to develop any of them for the pros. Remember these names-Hedstrom, Reuvers, Carlson, and now Wahl and Crowl. All highly rated tall players who left Minnesota only to become mediocre players there.

Can’t argue that party scene is better at Madison. We conceded that long ago.

Still, it’s freaking Wisconsin Nolan! All that cheap beer and loose co-ed action won’t prepare you for life son.

Shouldn't Gopher fans be happy then? Saved the Gophers from taking a bad player, right?

Wahl and Crowl are not mediocre, imo. Have developed very well thus far.

Ruevers was good too. Carlson got hurt. Pretty poor list or examples.
None of those were Ben Johnsons recruits either. We will see with Winter and it’s a different landscape on our side.
I dont really care who missed on kids. Either the coach is successful in bringing them to MN or they are not.

I think they are all separate cases. In the case of Winter...if his Mom and Dad are losing the battle to steer him to stay at home with the Gophers...how can you blame the coach if he isn't able to sway him? NIL isn't mentioned but we probably don't check that box either....is that Ben's philosophy bias or Coyle's lack of help or the absence of boosters stepping up or combination of many factors?
From miles away, Ben seems to be doing an excellent job of landing recruits and analyzing talent.
Nobody gets em all and we may still get Winter.

Agreed, not mediocre but also not difference makers. There are lots of other guys who could be more productive Gophers if we landed them. Doesn't matter where they come from but how good are they. Replace them with Jordan Murphy types and we'd be fine.
It is true a lot of our better players have Minnesota connections. Hopefully we get the ones we pursue and the trend is up.

Agreed, my point is past recruits choosing WI over MN isn’t as relevant to the pattern right now.
I'd argue it's more relevant. If past guys and present guys find WI to be a more appealing destination then the past or the present Gopher coach isn't necessarily the main reason we lose them. But, overall, again, I think they are all separate circumstances with differing reasons, in addition to things they like about WI more.

Ive learned here you can only blame the coach sometimes.

Better players in gopher history? If we listed the top 10, I think more would be from out of state than from here.

Top ten Gophers:
1. Thompson - Bahamas
2. McHale - Hibbing, Minnesota
3. Lou Hudson - not Minnesota
4. Jim Brewer - not Minnesota
5. Bobby Jackson - not Minnesota
6. Trent Tucker - Flint Michigan
7. Ray Williams -not Minnesota
8. Willie Burton - not Minnesota
9. Randy Breuer - Lake City, MN
10. Amir Coffey - Hopkins, Minnesota

You could put other players in here to skew the totals but one year wonders are excluded. So no Rickert or Kardashian.

Seems like the best come from out of state mostly.

I would probably put Murphy above Coffey.

Way OT but why is the party scene there just amazing compared to the U? I was at the U 4 years, I had a GREAT time. Admittedly I've never been to Madison, I mean you go, you drink or whatever you do to get tuned up, talk with guys, gals and whoever. You go home. Is there something I am missing? I mean in college we lived in a POS house, we drew the 32 team beer pong bracket on the wall, felt like that was a good time ha.

I feel like Will Ferrell in Old School. Odds are its just basic parties...but maybe it something cool, something I don't even know about! :)

Now just because leib0039 responded to you Otis, we don’t need a top ten of things you enjoyed while in Madison.
I was a little disappointed there were no urinals in the Liz Waters dormitory.

There's more puke in the streets of Madison
