All Things Charles Buggs Thread - Season Long Updates on the Future Gopher

How does a JV team at a D1 school work? Do they practice with the team? Are they just guys that wanna play basketball?

Those are the guys they are not paying. :)

It is a feeder for varsity. The best ones might become walk-ons. The rest probably enjoy playing basketball at a semi-competive level. They seem to play only at home so it is probably cost effective and a way to get good prep school/ juco kids on campus for a look. Neat idea really.

I suspect many local kids might choose U of M over D3 if there was a way to play semi-competive ball.

Listening to the most recent Talk Gopher Buckets podcast and Ryan James mentions that a poster on GI had talked to the play by play guy at Hargrave about Buggs. According to that play by play guy Hargrave has a 7-8 man rotation and Charles Buggs is NOT in that rotation. On the positive side, the play by play guy does "see the potential" in Buggs.

As if further bad news was needed, James doesn't like the Gophers chances with Tyus Jones and thinks it comes down to an MSU/Duke battle for his services.

These are things I have said and was called a Badger fan. That I had no idea because I hadn't seen him play. That Tubby has never missed on a MN and I was crazy. James says it...and you hear silence.

Tubby hating Badger fan! Everybody is allowed their opinion you just can't shut up about it every night.

I recall something like 18 and 7, or 17 and 8, something like that haha

Now it's coming back to me. If I'm remembering right, I think Sid said 18 and 17 and the coach corrected him saying 18 and 7. I know they score a lot of points as a team, but that still sounds like a lot for a guy who is supposedly not in the regular rotation. Oh well, I'm not going to read into it. I'm hoping he has a Damian-esque type career here. Time will tell.

Their JV program allows anyone to tryout each year. The players can be in the JV program for no more than two years. After that, they can try out for the varsity team. I remember reading somewhere that two or three walk-ons on their last championship team all originally played in their JV program.

I think they play their games a few hours before the varsity game, all at home. The head coach of the JV team is usually one of the varsity assistants. It gives them an opportunity to get head coaching experience. I believe Roy Williams was a JV coach a few years when he was an assistant under Dean Smith.

Ouch, just 6 minutes. Not a good sign. Is it possible the coach is playing other guys more cause they haven't signed anywhere yet?

This is frightening. He got the 10th most minutes on a prep school team. Now on a ppm basis he's terrific......
I hope this means he has a sprained ankle or something.
My thinking, which I mentioned above, is the coach is play other guys to get them offers. The main purpose of these PG schools is to get the guys offers.

He might have the highest PPM in the nation. Take that Calipari lol

All kidding aside, I think Buggs will do just fine here. May need a year or two to be fully ready, but I am still hopeful he will have a quality career here.

At least three of the guys logging big minutes are major college commits. So I don't think that's it. This obviously is a great squad - so perhaps he is just behind some great players. This would be a great story if he becomes a star as a Gopher.

Ya I'm just trying to rationalize why he had the offers he did and then we see this, just 6 minutes.

a la Clay Matthews. The type of story you speak of happens every now and then, so I'm waiting patiently to see Buggs play for the Gophers. I said it before, but the fact that other good programs have offered this kid shows that he's probably not just some low-level recruit.

Yeah, who knows. Buggs is the ultimate mystery recruit. I'm excited to finally get a look at him so we can get to the bottom of all of this.

They start 3 guards and not their 7 foot wake forest center...

I would not read too much into his minutes. It looks like they run a three guard offense. Starting Mosley, Ambrose a 6-3 guard, Heyward, Corey a 6-1 guard, Miller-McIntyre, Codi a 6-3 guard, Taylor, Ryan a 6-7 forward/guard, and Harrell, Montrezl (Virginia Tech) a 6-8 forward.

Washington, Andre (signed Wake Forest) a 7 foot center scored 10 points but only played 10 minutes… While Mosley, Ambrose shot 1-10 and 1-7 from three and still got 19 minutes. Buggs was 1-1 from three…

He practicing with and against future D-1 college players and he will do well as a Gopher.

On the upside, he won't be worn out when he gets here.

I think the strangest part of this whole situation is Buggs' coach flat out lying about his statistics. He couldn't have possibly thought that it wouldn't eventually reach Minnesota that Buggs was hardly playing?

Was the coach making things up or was it just Sid and the Trib just confused again?

He also said in a Monter interview that Buggs averages 18 points and 7 rebounds, then dodged the question about the write-ups and Buggs never being mentioned.

Maybe there is some truth that the coach is working to get his kids free rides to school and once you have your ticket you might play a bit less like Buggs and the center Andre Washington …

Also might explain not posting box scores...

I wonder if Buggs didn't enroll late and the coach had already promised x minutes to other players.

My conversation with Buggs' coach from 2/15

GopherHole: What stats do you have for him right now?

A.W. Hamilton: He is averaging about 15.5 points and about 8.5 rebounds and playing really well. Shooting about 60% from the field. He is doing very, very well.

GopherHole: Where will you play after your regular season is done?

A.W. Hamilton: They have a national tournament for prep schools in New Haven, Connecticut. That is March 6th and 7th and they will take the top eight prep schools in the country.

GopherHole: What has Charles scored in your last couple of games?

A.W. Hamilton: We had 16 points in our last game against Rockingham and seven rebounds. Against Lynchburg, we played our bottom seven players, which is why we didn’t post the score.

GopherHole: What number is Charles in your rotation?

A.W. Hamilton: He is the sixth man right now, which is great. We have seven high majors on our team.

GopherHole: What are the key things that he adds to your team?

A.W. Hamilton: Just his energy level. He has such a great motor. Defensively, when he comes into the game he gives the other team problems because he takes our press to another level because he is probably one of the most athletic kids that we have. He is super quick and super fast and has great instincts. He is a nightmare for the other team when he comes in the game.

Thanks Chris, great stuff.
