Hargrave completed an undefeated season (cut paste link bottom)

The Hargrave Post-Grad team completed an undefeated season on Saturday by winning the First Piedmont Invitational Tournament at Hargrave, 115-75, over Fishburne Military Academy.

The Tigers beat Massanutten Military Academy Friday night, 115-78, and Fishburne beat Fork Union Military Academy, 77-61, to advance to the championship game.

Hargrave finishes the season a perfect 36-0 and will play in the National Prep Championship in New Haven, Conn., with the rest of the top eight teams in the country on March 6-7.

“Two great wins for us against two really good teams that are very well-coached, this was great for our team to come out and be able to win the First Piedmont Invitational,” said Hargrave coach A.W. Hamilton.

The Tigers were led by Montrezl Harrell in both games. The Virginia Tech commit scored 21 points Friday and 22 on Saturday.

“He does that every day in practice and that’s why it carries over to the games,” said Hamilton of Harrell. “We expect that and nothing less out of him, he has bought in to our system all the way and it really shows. He is night-and-day the player he was when he first got here.”

Point guard Codi Miller-McIntyre also played a major role in the two wins. The Wake Forest commit scored 17 points Friday and 18 on Saturday.

Forward Ryan Taylor also had a big contribution in both games scoring 16 points on Friday and 18 points on Saturday.

Massanutten beat Fork Union in the consolation game, 79-68.

Being his first season at Hargrave, Hamilton was pleased with his squad’s success.

“It was a great season for us,” he said. “We were able to show up in every game and we had to show a lot of heart in certain games and anytime you can have an undefeated season it’s something to be proud of.”

I posted an eyewitness report from these games that said Buggs had 10 points in each game with plenty of rebounds and other contributions. then, for some reason, someone linked a prior box score from another regular season win where charles had not played a ton.

it looks like he actually had 12 points and 10 points and they have him down for 8 rebs one game.

again - this program is ridiculously loaded. just getting offered to play at hargrave is a sign of talent, and playing and contributing means you have high D1 ability.

plus charles' had an offer list that doesnt really open questions to how he was percieved in the fall - Marquette, Arkansas, Miami-Fl, Seton Hall, etc. Arkansas and Miami in particular were all over him.

everything I have heard regarding charles' development this season has been very encouraging.

thanks for posting these.

8 Teams Set for National Prep Championship (link)March 6th and March 7th 2012

@Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut

"The field is headlined by the nation’s two undefeated post-graduate programs, Brewster Academy and Hargrave Military Academy. Brewster completed a perfect 29-0 season last week with wins over Tilton and Bridgton, while Hargrave earned weekend wins over Massanutten and Fishburne to capture the First Piedmont Invitational title and finish the regular season at a perfect 34-0. Here is some video of Buggs playing (skip ahead to 4:15). He is number 32. Kind of looks... raw? He plays for about a minute and a half.

He's not one of those stand up fours that are actually 6'5"/6'6". Looks like a legit 6'8". I'll agree with you that he looks raw, but I also thought the video showed a lot of athleticism

Thanks for posting, easy.

Is it just me or does he look like he could but on A LOT of weight? Like, I thought he would look like Rodney but he looks more like a less muscular Trevor, but longer arms.

Also, he looked really awkward without the ball, but the time he actually dribbled it, it looked pretty natural.

Hmmm. I guess you can't teach height. He looks like he has a long ways to go.

I agree but so did EE and Oto when they walked on campus. We have 11 experienced players returning next year. I would guess Tubby will redshirt.

You can take nothing from this video other than he plays on a team that runs no form of offense other than dribble penetrate, they don't run any pick and roll and no one cares about defense....
It's nice to see him, but I would imagine we won't know much until next year. I agree that unless there is an injury or a defection, he probably will be redshirted.

I received the following report from a very close source who witnessed those 2 games posted above:

- charles has made great progress working against all these other top D1 players all year. this is a massive step up in competition from his HS, which did little to prepare him. all his quality development occurred this past spring/summer in aau.

- he still needs to add more weight, but he has added some and can bang inside with the big guys at hargrave a lot better than he could in the fall.

- the hargrave team is ridiculous, as has been mentioned, and are undefeated heading into the final tourney. charles has played well and contributed to that in a major way, but it is simply hard to get lots of shots and numbers on this team. charles is unselfish by nature.

- I do not believe he will redshirt next season, which I was somewhat expecting even following a prep season. this indicates the level of progress he has made this season, imo.

- I am not sure which video was posted above b/c it is blocked for me, but there is a great HS highlight video (which is pre-AAU summer and pre-prep) and there is a little bit of video from the first half of the game that Charles' AAU team defeated a team with 2 big men (Isaiah Austin and Chad Rykhoek) both signed to go to Baylor. Austin has been the #1 recruit in the nation at times and is a McDonald's AA.

- as always, fans should temper expectations, but I am hopeful that Charles may be able to contribue as a freshman based upon reports recieved throughout this season.

Hargrave Military Academy 79, Northfield Mount Hermon 75

With the first 3 games being decided by a total of 10 points it seemed improbable that the nightcap would top them all but that’s exactly what happened. NMH came in fresh off their run to the NEPSAC AAA title including a victory over previously undefeated Brewster Academy. With Hargrave entering this contest undefeated, NMH was trying to do the impossible for the second time in a week. In the opening minutes that seemed like the path we were headed down as NMH came out flying jumping out to a 22-8 advantage. It wasn’t only the lead but how NMH got to it that was so impressive. Running the floor in transition and dunking everything in sight (including multiple alleyoops) sent a strong message. The win over Brewster wasn’t a fluke. NMH came to New Haven with every intention of winning another tournament. The person responsible for most of the hammers being dropped at the rim was 6’8” Harvard signee Evan Cummins. Cummins looks more explosive and bouncy around the rim than ever before and projects as a star in the Ivy League. If still uncommitted high majors would be all over Cummins which really speaks to the phenomenal job Tommy Amaker is doing at Harvard.

While NMH threw a hard first punch, Hargrave didn’t go undefeated this year by backing down when they’re in a fight. They punched right back and took the lead at the half 42-38. They turned the tide with swarming pressure defense and the interior duo of Montrezl Harrell and Ryan Taylor. Harrell (31 points) dunks everything within 5 feet with such power that it appears the backboard might come down every time. One of the strongest players in high school basketball, Harrell does a great job of sealing his defender and leaves no question at the rim. Taylor is more skilled with the ball in his hands but also can bully defenders inside when need be. He had one sequence that stood above everything else I saw all day. Taylor grabbed a defensive rebound and took off in the other direction weaving through multiple defenders before using a euro step in the lane and finishing with his left hand. Falling to the ground on the finish Taylor was left trailing behind the play on defense as NMH tried to push and get a layup. He raced down the floor and pinned a rejection up against the backboard from behind securing the ball for his team. The combination of skill and effort that Taylor showed in this 20 second sequence eclipsed anything else that happened on this court today. With Taylor and Harrell leading Hargrave and Cummins and Sam Donahue (21 points on a bunch of deep shots) leading NMH, the lead changed hands multiple times in a wild second half. It came down to Hargrave trying to secure a 1 point lead with 45 seconds left. NMH opted to get a stop without fouling but had their hearts broken when Ambrose Mosley tossed in a 30 footer as the shot clock expired giving Hargrave a 79-75 lead. They won by that same score in the best game of the day.

report I got was that Charles defended and rebounded well in the game last night, but did not have a good day shooting the ball.

I am sure NERR will cover the game today, but I will see what I can get on Buggs specifically.

Jimmy, thanks for the updates on Buggs - much appreciated.

Go Gophers!!

Jimmy, if you are indeed a troll.... well then... I love trolls. Thank you.

well it's not as complicated as some are making it out to be.

I coach basketball in texas. I am familiar with buggs and am a big fan due to following him in texas this summer. I want minnesota to succeed and joined in order to follow the gophers this season and provide any info I can get on charles from my contacts down here.

I sent a couple texts and hargrave had a big lead for most of the game today and won 76-61. I asked about charles specifically and the contact was checking on that, but was getting the score updates from twitter so no player specifics yet.

Brewster Academy, who was undefeated until last week and has several high D1 kids, won as well.

Hargrave seeks to finish the regular season undefeated in the National Prep Championship game at 7:30 p.m. E.S.T.

twitter updates can be found at:

@FinkelsteinNERR

in summary - charles is essentially playing on the #1 or #2 prep team in America this season, which is the highest level of HS ball in the country and is almost a college bball minor leagues for high D1 kids.

I think this year has been excellent for his development, and hope they can win it tonight with Charles contributing.

will update any info I get on Charles' earlier game and/or the title game

Love the info Jimmy. Gopher fans appreciate it. Would you say that added strength is the biggest thing that Charles needs at this point?

without a doubt. he has added a decent bit this year and one reason he chose hargrave is because they have a very dedicated strength staff that also works with the football team.

I was told he has undoubtedly gotten a lot stronger and is able to bang with the bigs much better than he did in the fall, and know he had a ridiculous dunk over 2 people last week as well as an 8 rebound game, so those are both good signs.

you just never know with any particular recruit, but this has been a nice year of development for charles.
