All Things 2024 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread - Videos, Tweets, Articles, Rumors, Analysis and More

Top 75 point guard Dellquan Warren decommitted from Rutgers today.

From what I have read, McAndrew wanted nothing to do with Minnesota.
This is exactly it. The only thing he wanted to do with the U was to complain we didn't offer him. We have a weird little group of local players that want the U to kiss their ass despite having any intention of going to the U.

Same as the local AAU coaches who complained forever about the gopher coaches and then the U hired their chosen guy and they send virtually none of their top players to the U

That makes it even better when we do not offer those kids. They can complain all they want, but the official line is that the U wasn't interested, they didn't even get an offer!

With our top guys being poached for so long the borders were redrawn x amount of years ago

from all accounts, the Gophers decided they wanted Grove over McAndrew.

that is what coaches do - they evaluate talent, decide which players are the best fit for their system, and try to get those players to commit. and then they hope they made the right choice.

Hey - maybe they reached out to McAndrew and were told to buzz off. Maybe they just thought Grove was a better fit for what they want to do. we'll see how things work out.

FWIW - Creighton last year was ranked 26th in the final AP ratings and 12th in the Coaches' poll. a very solid program.

And supposedly have that NIL churning. Good program, decent sized city, good conference and money.

There are many things that are simultaneously true:

  • The one-and-done types are unlikely to stay in state. There hasn't been one of those in several cycles, though.
  • There are routinely 3 or so P6 level recruits per year in the next tier.
    • Can we agree that these would be natural Gopher targets? Especially given that Johnson was at least partly hired for his local connections.
  • Over the past couple of cycles, many of these have not chosen - or even considered - Minnesota
    • The lack of interest may have been mutual
  • If a recruit makes it clear they are eliminating your program from consideration, you move on and concentrate on other targets
I'm also of two minds in terms of the geographic makeup of the roster- a) it doesn't matter where they come from, and b) you'd like to think there would be a core of local guys who are good enough to play at this level.
