watched Platteville and Oshkosh. with 2 minutes left in game, Platteville had ball inside Oshkosh 20 yd line with a 4th-and-1. they went for a gadget play with a direct snap to the RB and pitch back to the QB, who ran around and threw an incomplete pass. Platteville never got offense in groove the entire day. Oshkosh was more explosive team.
 



Good D2 battle in the Twin Cities today. Minnesota State-Moorhead played Concordia-St. Paul and won with a go-ahead touchdown, 34-31. It was actually MSUM's first lead of the game, as the Dragons trailed 21-7 at one point.

They battled in a back-and-forth second half, though, and clinched the win at the end. Pretty nice day to catch a game, classic fall sweater weather for football. That's probably especially true a an MSUM alum.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. It was a pretty solid crowd at Laird Stadium, which was where I was sitting when I took the photo. Fans for both teams sit on the same side as the Visitors bench is directly in front of Hwy 19.

Driving out of town on Cedar Ave, I could also see a pretty decent crowd at St Olaf considering St Scholastica's small fan base and distance from Duluth.

Stout somehow blew their 21 point halftime lead yet still made some key plays to almost save the win. They doinked a 50 yard kick off the post for the win as regulation time expired but couldn't get it done in overtime. WIAC is unreal this year. 6 out of the 8 teams have a shot and everyone has lost at least one conference game

Tommyboy just comes into this thread to vent his anger. It sounds like his kid stunk at football and somehow that is the fault of all D2 and D3 football.

FWIW - from the MN Strib: (don't tell Tommyboy)

St. John’s, which is ranked No. 3 in the D3football.com poll, is the top-ranked team in the NCAA’s National Power Index (NPI) for Division III football.

This is the first season that the NPI is being used for Division III football. The NPI will be used to select 12 at-large teams for the expanded 40-team (up from 32) field for the D-III playoffs.

Interesting because I went to a Bethel game and there wasn't an empty seat in the place.

Caught the second half. Good game. Concordia IMHO scored too early, and could not stop MSUM, especially during that last drive.
 

Something I learned while attending the Carleton/St John's game from the PA Announcer:

Bob Sullivan Field at Laird Stadium is the only remaining natural grass playing surface in the MIAC.

back when Augsburg was playing its home games at Parade Stadium, we would have given anything to play on turf. by the end of the season, Parade got so beat up that the teams were playing on dirt. if it rained, they were playing on mud, and late in the year, frozen mud.

as the guy trying to keep stats, it got dicey when you couldn't read jersey numbers.

Perhaps that's why Augsburg started the trend to artificial turf in the MIAC when they moved back on campus?

At least I think that the Auggies were first. I believe that they brought it in from the Detroit Lions' Pontiac Stadium.

Entertaining week in the NSIC with a top-two conference match-up and a pair of games coming down to 3 points or less. Not the case for Minnesota State University-Moorhead, though.

The Dragons had a dominant game against the Mustangs from Southwest Minnesota State. It was quite the fun doubleheader watching the Dragons have a blowout win and then the Gophers doing the same against Maryland.

With that said, here's the results for Saturday, Minnesota teams in bold:

Just saw your comment. It sounds like St. John's had over 11,000 for a blowout vs. Gustavus. Bethel has been packed the few times I've been there in the past decade. I believe Whitewater routinely gets over 10,000 in bigger games. There's no shortage of fan interest for the strong teams.

 

I'll be at the Stout La Crosse game tomorrow in menomonie. Big matchup for the WIAC standings. I think River Falls plays Whitewater.

That was infuriating to watch. Some truly boneheaded coaching decisions led to that collapse.
 

If any one wants to sign up, I think Luther would accept warm bodies for tomorrow’s game at Wartburg. Bet you could get some reduced tuition, too.

a quick story.

back in HS, a group from my (Lutheran) Church went down to watch the Luther-Wartburg football game. It was Homecoming week for Luther. during halftime, they had the Homecoming Floats drive around the field.

One of the floats had a shack-like structure on the back. the slogan was "Shack Up Every Knight."

the kids thought it was hilarious. the adults were not pleased.

this would have been early 70's - maybe '71 or '72.
