All Things 2024 College Football D2 and D3 Thread

If any one wants to sign up, I think Luther would accept warm bodies for tomorrow’s game at Wartburg. Bet you could get some reduced tuition, too.

I thought Luther used to field decent athletic teams in years past including football. Have they been this bad for long?

Yeah, it's going to be bad, especially since it's a road game with limited backups traveling. Scholastica met a harsh reality after leaving the UMAC.

Lost to Olaf by 3, beat Macalester. Good chance to beat Hamline and maybe win the final week as it should be an even matchup. 3 conference wins puts them ahead of others. But it has been tough sledding.

That was infuriating to watch. Some truly boneheaded coaching decisions led to that collapse.
That was brutal. La Cross controlled the line on both sides of the ball. Still should have won that game. The standings are still a cluster and we finish with Oshkosh and Platteville who are the two teams ahead in standings so winning out, as hard as that will be, would get at least a share of the title or an at large in the national playoffs

That Sioux Falls Augustana game should be great.

Bethel and Concordia next week to see who gets a second shot at St Johns.

I wonder which school is the next to drop football. It is inevitable at these levels. I won't be surprised if a whole school eventually shuts down. Numbers, numbers, and number$.

Out of curiosity and mostly because the MN schools are bolded—do roster breakdowns of where players are from vary greatly? Or is the conference pretty similar regardless of location?

I've only really tracked MSU-Moorhead, and the roster is usually from the tri-state area: Minnesota and the Dakotas. Some are from Wisconsin, Iowa or other parts of the Midwest.

Quick glance at MSU-Mankato which is the powerhouse for the state right now and it's fairly similar, though they get a couple recruits from outside of the region like Florida. Still mostly Midwest/Great Plains recruits.

Yeah, they have made it hard on themselves with the La Crosse and River Falls losses. Like you said, need to win out and need a little outside help as well.

Are you talking about public or private schools?

In the MIAC, St. Marys doesn't sponsor football, and I think they may be the most endangered school in the league overall.

In the UMAC, Northland doesn't sponsor football, and they are very close to closing their doors. They almost closed after last year.

In the NSIC, I don't see any schools dropping football or closing.

Yeah I think at this point, at least at the D2 level, most programs are fine in terms of staying at the university. Mary, Minot and recently Southwest Minnesota State have been really struggling on the field, but I think that has more to do with the level of competition with the rest of the NSIC.

I don't see another school dropping football right now. It made sense for Crookston which never had much success and was always a smaller school. St. Cloud State meanwhile has rolled back everything with enrollment declines so it makes sense there. Other schools from what I know aren't in that situation.

Have you heard anything yourself about some programs being in danger @maroonfive ?

SCSU enrollment is shrinking, but I had thought football went away due to title IX issues

There was little support for the program, and I think so much money goes to D1 hockey there, they had to make a choice.

Crookston never, ever should have gone up to D2. Especially with Morris dropping back down to D3.

so the MIAC plays its final round of Divisional games this week. here's where the races stand, courtesy of the Strib:

Bethel (7-1, 3-0 Skyline) plays at Concordia-Moorhead (6-2, 3-0) for the Skyline Division title. Bethel has won the division three straight years.

A three-way tie for first place in the Northwoods is possible when St. John’s (8-0, 3-0 Northwoods) plays host to St. Olaf (6-2, 2-1), and Gustavus Adolphus (5-3, 2-1) plays at Carleton (3-5, 1-2).
If St. John’s, which is ranked No. 3 in the d3football.com Top 25 and ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division III National Power Index, defeats St. Olaf it will win the division.

If the Johnnies lose to St. Olaf, and Gustavus tops Carleton, it will create a three-way tie for first in the division. The Johnnies would win the tiebreaker for the top spot in the division.

If St. Olaf wins and Carleton tops Gustavus, St. Olaf wins the division.

BTW - this is the final season for Divisions in the MIAC.

Hard to figure Southwest States level of struggle this year with the Schwann’s money they actually have darn nice facilities, but they’ve really dropped off the map.

Didn't Schwanns just go out of business? I am just thinking these state schools are getting less aid and don't have big donors. Declining enrollment with numbers down for hs football at least in the Midwest area something has to give. I think St Cloud added soccer after they dropped football and have become a wrestling and hockey school.

Football has the highest number of participation in the state of all sports. SCSU has been slaughtered with poor decisions by left wing leaders. They cut the football program due to financial and legal issues with women sports. They should have joined the Summit when they had the chance. This would have bee great for the school and the community.

Lol. Football is the most popular sport in the country but is is declining as far as participation. It is the most offered sport. Small schools can't offer the olympic sports but can offer football and basketball. Enrollment is down and the cost has gone up. I can remember when kids in high school only had to pay for their class ring and yearbook. Participation in sports was free. I can also remember when schools even in the 500 to 1000 enrollment would have 80 or 90 out for football. Now you are lucky if you have 30. Summit League lol. Minnesota is lucky to have 2 division 1 teams. It will never have any more.

Schwan's home delivery just went out of business, but Schwan's Food Company is a $3+ billion company that still has presence in Marshall (corporate + production) but is owned by a South Korean conglomerate.

Home delivery was a shrinking piece of their business for years.

They were in many ways the OG, but a victim of a static business model with demographic changes skewing away from rural to suburban/urban living, along with expanded offerings of premium products where people shop on a weekly basis (grocery, Target/Walmart, Costco/Sam's).
