All Things 2023 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread

Low risk play getting Dobbs. Have no problems with it. There was nobody we could bring in that would make this team competitive in January. Why overpay for a scrub off the streets? Why trade good pieces/draft picks just to maybe win a couple more games and further drop us down the draft positioning.

Yep.

I look at this way: if Hall plays and he shows he's definitely not the franchise guy, the team will struggle and therefore receive a high draft pick.

If Hall balls out, our QB questions have been answered.

It's kind of a win-win.

Optics matter - you really can’t stand pat and not do anything. Most fans are realistic enough to get the play and appreciate it, as their options were severely limited.

Anyone that approves of this move hasn't been watching the Cardinals this season. Dobbs looked good in the first month of the season when nobody had recent tape on him and nobody was taking the Cardinals seriously. In the last month, he's been an unmitigated dumpster fire, completely overwhelmed.

This is just a terrible, terrible move, unless he's backing up Nick Mullens the rest of the season.

What you will hear in the coming day or two justifying this move is how smart Dobbs is and how good a guy he is and how good of a locker room guy he is; all true, but little to none of that means anything in regards to him being able to win games for the Vikings.

Cardinals fans are rejoicing today, I can assure you of that. Looking forward to seeing what rookie Clayton Tune can do next Sunday until Murray returns full time.
I think the move was made because they don't think Mullens will be ready to play any time soon with his lower back injury. Hall is going to play the rest of the year, unless he is complete garbage or gets injured.

Dobbs’ recent timeline

  • Nov. 28, 2022: Waived by Browns
  • Dec. 5. 2022: Signed with Lions practice squad
  • Dec. 21, 2022: Signed by Titans off Lions practice squad
  • Dec. 29, 2022: Made first NFL start in Titans’ loss to Cowboys (also started season finale on Jan. 7)
  • March 20: Signed with Browns as a free agent
  • Aug. 24: Traded by Browns to Cardinals
  • Sept. 10: Made first of eight starts for Cardinals (1-7)
  • Oct. 31: Source: Traded by Cardinals to Vikings
Vikings are Dobbs' fifth team in 11 months. The jury has returned and the verdict is in.
Oh.

Optics or no optics, they were down to Hall, Mullens and Mannion.

Mullens is hurt/unavailable right now, Mannion might be injured as well, and even if he's healthy he is barely serviceable. There's no way they could move forward with that situation. If Hall were to get hurt, would they even have another QB who could be suited up?

They had to bring in somebody, even if just a warm body.

I echoed your sentiments above in a prior post and as you know, multiple boxes can be checked when making a decision- good choices work on multiple levels and aren’t binary.

Orlovsky is arguably the single most idiotic person on national television talking about NFL football, and it's fitting he's doing his good work for the "worldwide leader".
I usually like when he breakdown plays. I think it’s informative.

I just thought this was really bizarre.

No one is a head coach when you run the garbage out at qb that he has had to deal with.

Belichek all of sudden sucks by the way.

He's the main reason he has garbage at QB. He pisses everyone off when he gets to a new team. He ran Jay Cutler out of Denver as soon as he got there, and he ran Derek Carr out of LV last season.

Mark Davis has been able to build a championship team, in the WNBA.

Not sure he did much "building".

He bought a team, after it moved to Las Vegas. A team that had finished 4th in the league two years before and lost in the Conference Finals. Then they had the best record in the WNBA and lost in the Finals the year before Davis bought them. Davis bought the team and put a new President in and made Becky Hammon the Head Coach. They had a great year but lost in the Conference Finals again.

They again had the best record in '22 and '23 and won the WNBA Championships. Great teams too. Maybe they got there by Davis staying out of the way.

The Raiders on the other hand, last Divison Championship was in 2002. They got to the Super Bowl and lost to Tampa Bay 48-21.

Mark's Dad, Al Davis, was the Owner and General Manager.

Mark Davis has to sell the team. Hope the new owners take the team to a Super Bowl and then sell it back to him. Then maybe he could win one.:)

Fair point on "building". He was in charge already though when Becky Hammon hired, which seems rather important to the 2 titles.

Yeah, said that in the 5th sentence.

I think this pretty much sums it up. They have to like Hall to some degree, or they would have made different moves.

Big difference between coming in cold last week, no expectation of playing, and spending an entire week preparing while knowing you are going to be the Man.

They'll have Hall as prepared as he can be for Atlanta. Honestly, better for him to start his first NFL game on the road against a very mediocre team than in front of a home crowd and quite a bit of added pressure.

Like I said about qb's

It was extremely odd that this was announced well after midnight Eastern time.

Also can anyone think of other NFL Coaches fired more than once in the middle a season?

Lane Kiffin. Also by the Raiders and USC. Not sure twice in the NFL. The Raiders are the king of in-season firing. Mike Shanahan. Art Shell. Kiffin. Jon Gruden. McDaniels.

East coast writers complain about an announcement made a little after 10:00 local time.

That's really late for local time though too. Were they all at Raiders HQ that hour of the night?

It gets on as a breaking story on the “early” late news (10:00) and becomes a hot lead story on the 11:00 news.

Without much time to react, the Raiders control the narrative.
