All Things 2023 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

What an unmitigated disaster was last year's trade deadline:

According to Vegas Spencer Steer has the 6th highest odds to win NL rookie of the year.

Also Vegas says Yannier Cano has the 9th highest odds to win AL rookie of the year.

CES was just called up to the majors after being one of the best hitters in AAA.

Cade Povich is the 11th best prospect in the Oriole's farm system.

What did we get in return for all this? A mediocre reliever named Floro who will likely be with us for a grand total of two months.

Steer and CES were in a completely separate trade that had nothing to do with Lopez.

Huh, and here I thought all four were traded for Lopez and that the Reds gave us Mahle out of the goodness of their hearts. 🙄

With Buxton and Polanco back, I'm ready to be done with the Joey Gallo experiment. Sending Wallner back down to keep him would be a crime. Of course that's what they will do.

Wallner is 100% getting sent down and frankly its a joke.

Hes one of those guys where having him in AAA at this point is the equivalent to rotting away. It doesnt do him any good, it doesnt do the organization any good and it makes the Twins a worse team.

Ober/Julien/AK/Royce(these 4 have officially cemented themselves) and Wallner are our 5 youth players that regardless where they go from here. How they perform and fully turn out, 1 thing is for absolute certain. They are far too good for AAA. They cannot be down there unless they go on a JOse Miranda type slump while up here.

Its really that simple.

Additionally, Cano showed nothing in the minors to predict this year’s success, nor last year when he had a 11.50 cumulative ERA with the Orioles and Twins in 18 innings (this included a 9.22 ERA for MN); he was also 28 at the time of the trade and not even listed as one of our Top 30 prospects by MLB either IIRC. He was a throw in for the trade and the flyer the Orioles took worked out - most throw ins obviously don’t.

No one complained last year when it happened and you win some and lose some.

"Last year's trade deadline was an unmitigated disaster.". Does that sound like I was just referring to the trade with Baltimore?
You then said this "What did we get in return for all this? A mediocre reliever named Floro who will likely be with us for a grand total of two months."

By saying they only got a few months of Floro I assumed you were saying that was the only return of trading all those players. We also got a few months of Mahle.

My first sentence identified that I was speaking about the whole trade deadline. Can't imagine anyone on this board would think all four of those prospects were traded to Baltimore. Your opinion of my Twins knowledge must be pretty low 🙂.

Not at all. I get things mixed up all the time.

Sorry to butt in, but I think it would have been crystal clear if two words had been changed:

"What did do we get have in return for all this? A mediocre reliever named Floro who will likely be with us for a grand total of two months."

I knew what was meant though, but understand potential confusion.

White Sox trade Giolito and Lopez. Read a couple articles grading the trade, both saying Chicago won it. But White Sox have to be one of the most disappointing teams this season.

On a micro level, I was hoping the White Sox were going to hang on to Giolito for a few more days as they are playing the Guards this weekend and was due to start against them.

All that for only $10million and blocking the playing time of “prospects”. It was a stupid signing then and is still a stupid signing. I think the bomba squad was the worst thing to happen to this front office is they instantly went to thinking that was the only was to win. Example one was singing Josh Donaldson for 4 years and $100million the next season. Luckily they escaped that mess in an ok position.

They certainly are. Probably the most disappointing. Trade explains why Giolito looked so giddy in the dugout during the game.

Wonder how much trade value Lynn and Kelly lost last night for them?

They gave up a 5 run lead, in one inning. Walking in two runs, wild pitching in another, hitting two batters. They gave up 6 runs on only 3 hits. All singles.

Should have traded them yesterday morning.;)

I just don't get how the post can be that badly misinterpreted. Oh well, I need to work on being more precise I guess.

Yes, would think Sox had really hoped to get a lot for both those guys. Will be interesting as well if Cease and Anderson go.

Yes, along with the Mets and Padres. NYY haven’t been anything to brag about either, although they’re still in the WC chase.

And Sox, Padres, Mets, Yanks are four of the big spenders. Interesting how that worked out for them.

Think they'll keep Cease. Bet they've been working the phones to send Anderson, Lynn and Kelly on their way.

#1 spending Mets - 7 games under .500,

#2 spending Yankees - 6 games over .500

#3 spending Padres - 5 games under .500

The White Sox are 13th in spending and are 21 games under .500

Tampa Bay and the Orioles are by far getting the best out of their payrolls.

(Also note that the Angels have, mainly because of Mike Trout, $106,592,304 on Injured Reserve!)

Wow. Seems counter intuitive. Truth is those teams have so much money they just keep spending no matter the result.

Amed Rosario traded to the Dodgers - Guards with an interesting move

He's still better than Kepler though, so I was told just last week.

Read an article on the Padres and it stated that there is a ton of animosity in the dugout - the name I consistently see floated to be traded is Soto. My guess is they look at the guy whose the biggest problem and look to move him, as they’re not gonna trade all of their mega- stars.

Yanks showed what a folly this approach was off the heels of their run in the late 90s - I moved out here in 1998 - those teams loved and played for each other, as that core came up together - Jeter, Posada, Williams, Rivera, Petite etc…and they added pieces along the way.
Won WS- 96, 98, 99, 2000

Steinbrenner then wanted the big time free agents: Giambi, Brown, Johnson, ARod et al.
Win World Series 2009

Baseball players spend a minimum of 6 months together (excluding the playoffs); chemistry matters a ton.
