All Things 2023 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Not sure if any manager is gonna get a great year out of the Twins as long as those "hitters" continue to strike out, and strike out and strike out...

Julien!!

Correa has been better average wise since moving to leadoff. But what in the fuck happened to his power?? Is this dude washed up in his prime?? He hits more pop ups than Miranda.

Last year Correa hit a homer ever 23.7 Abs. For his career its like 22 ABs per homer. This year its over 29.

What in the fuck.

We literally cannot get the bottom of their order out. This is embarrassing.

They are threatening to score in their SIXTH inning in a row dating back to last night.

This is absolutely pathetic.

We cant even get outs.

Al started with Moran last night and the flood gates refuse to close

There is something to be noted that two guys they called up in Kiriloff and Julien take better at bats then 10 year major leaguers. Is that on the hitting coach, manager? Someone has some explaining to do with what the plan is. So many taken fastballs right down the middle and called third strikes it’s very frustrating. Of course it’s also going to be a major league record so they have that going for them.

Why are we giving Larnach 3-0 green lights.

Lets draw the walk and turn the lineup over and get to guys who are good.

Wallner too.

Hes got a lot of swing in miss in his game. But he swings at a lot of good pitches.

Kiriloff strikes out about 26% of the time. Julien strikes out about 33%. As a team they strike out 28% of the time. Yeah, none of that is good. Not sure where their RISP is but it's probably not good.

As long as players get the big money based on home many home runs they hit. Not on how many runs they score or drive in players are gonna swing for the fences no matter what they are told.

Its the approaches of the young guys. They take balls. And they try to go the other way. Thats why when they dont strike out they do damage to all parts of the field.

A lot of Juliens Ks are on 2-2/3-2 counts were the ump doesnt give him the call. They wait for their pitch.

Good news is Cole Sands can pitch today. The guy has not thrown a pitch for like 12 days but yet he’s taking up valuable bullpen spot.

This is a fucking disaster. Ever since last night we cant get them out. Rocco opened the flood gates and they wont shut.

SEVEN straight innings of runs. 16 runs in those 7 innings.

We are getting bent over a fucking barrel by their minor leagues called up from AAA. Marlowe and Moore, we are the only team in baseball that cant get thse guys out.

Every single time they have 2 strikes they foul off pitches til the walk, homer or get a single. Embarrasing.

Julien needs to just murder an ump.

2-0 count. Pitch 3 is 7 inches outside and called a strike.

Yes as mentioned below it’s the overall approaches not their strike out rate. They don’t swing at balls and are aggressive in the early counts. Yes the twins strike out way too much, which made adding Gallo for $10million this off-season just stupid, when you need bullpen help in the worst way.

8 straight innings....

Lets wait til the last minute to make moves after we blow our lead again.

Why strive to be great? Just let our manager blow games with shitty players. Thats a good strategy.

Today is more on Joe Ryan than Rocco. Needed a quality start in the worst way.

Lots of baseball left as I am typing this.

Oh Rocco hasnt done anything wrong today. He cant bring in Jax in the 5th inning.

Its just a ripple effect though. We knew the pen was in trouble. Pagan warmed up in the 6th yesterday. Not using him to win that game has caused a disaster of pitching.

The bats(besides Correa) are doing everything they can though. Can we finally put up a 0?

Scoreless inning!!!!

Not just that, but 1-2-3!!!

Cmon bats. Dont shrivel now.

The bats have shriveled.

Solano is worthless now. Just horrible AB's every time and hes either starting at clean up or pinch hitting.

These last two games are a perfect example of why in baseball you are only as good as you’re last game. Last night the bullpen that had been very good for a week was terrible and today the best part of your team, starting pitching was not good.

Blanked the last 3 innings. Got our hopes up just to lose 8-7.

Wallner gonna get sent down this time after hitting 3 homers in 2 games. Similar to his 8 straight times reaching base in May.

While vets like Solano get to keep failing in the moment. Buxton gets to be horrible. Correa gets to slug .400.

The youth is giving us life. The vets are suffocating that life.

Absolutely putrid day for Correa. 0-5. As mentioned already first 3 ABs were 4 pitches total, 2 weak pop outs and a dribble to first.

HIs last two ABs in the clutch. Guy on 1st 2 outs during the 6th inning rally. He strikes out. Guy on first no outs in the 9th down 1, he hits a dribbler back to the mound that is probably a DP if Munoz doesnt bobble it.

This team is the youth.

Considering how the team has been pitching and (not) hitting all season, it’s hard to believe they have lost two consecutive 9-inning games when scoring 7 runs each game.

So we give away prospects. Then trade the guy trade the guy who cost us those prospects for another guy who stinks and still have the same lack of bullpen depth.

I’m thinking the twins should bring up Dallas Kuehcel and push back Joe Ryan’s next start. His live arm ain’t looking so live anymore.

Professional analysis via Gleeman in The Athletic (he of course uses advanced analytics in his summation to make his point). Sounds like it was worth a shot to me-

Why the Twins acquired Floro

Floro has been a quality late-inning reliever since 2018, first with the Los Angeles Dodgers and then with Miami, posting a 3.17 ERA in 296 appearances. However, the 32-year-old right-hander is an impending free agent with an uncharacteristically bloated 4.52 ERA this season, so the Marlins decided to flip him for another right-handed reliever under team control for 2024.

For Minnesota, the motivation to swap López for Floro is similarly clear. They simply were never able to trust López in the type of high-leverage role they acquired him to fill last season, so 2024 team control was no longer of much value.

Floro’s poor ERA masks strong secondary numbers largely in line with his career norms, including a 41-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio and just two homers allowed in 40 innings.

Floro has been hurt by a .396 batting average on ball in play, fourth-highest among MLB relievers and 80 points above his career mark. While there’s no guarantee his luck will change, some of those grounders and bloopers finding gloves could turn him back into a reliable option very quickly. Both his 3.37 xERA and 3.06 xFIP — which are more predictive than traditional ERA — are setup-caliber and in line with his career norms.

Overall, Floro boasts a career 3.32 ERA and gives Twins manager Rocco Baldelli another trusted reliever in a Minnesota bullpen hurt by injuries to Brock Stewart and Caleb Thielbar. — Gleeman

Lot-

I found this article interesting regarding his future- I gotta think he knows he’s going to get called up at some point, especially when he doesn’t use the opt-out. Writer makes interesting point about the number of innings pitched by our starters or that he could replace Kenta with him going to the pen. With a read IMO -

Man that went south fast.
What an unmitigated disaster was last year's trade deadline:

According to Vegas Spencer Steer has the 6th highest odds to win NL rookie of the year.

Also Vegas says Yannier Cano has the 9th highest odds to win AL rookie of the year.

CES was just called up to the majors after being one of the best hitters in AAA.

Cade Povich is the 11th best prospect in the Oriole's farm system.

What did we get in return for all this? A mediocre reliever named Floro who will likely be with us for a grand total of two months.

With those moves, despite being tied for 1st Place as late as Labor Day last year, the Twins finished 14 games behind the Guards.
