All Things 2022 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

You asked why. I answered.

If you're going to reject any answer as plausible, there really is no need to ask the question.
Well, I'd kind of knew that one. It still makes no sense to me.

Ohtani hits 1st, Trout 2nd for the Angels. Tatis, Soto, Betts, and Acuna almost always bat in the 1 or 2 spot. The best hitters hit 1 or 2 more often now days than 3 or 4.
They have a 3 hitter that will hit 35 HR's and drive in 100 runs.

We don't have that at 3

So now you're changing your argument I see.

Rendon has hit more than 25 HR one time in 9 seasons. Polanco just hit 33 HR and drove in 98 last year.

My argument is that batting buxton one and correa two is stupid.

I'll ask your opinion when they eventually move buxton down and ask for the explanation.

My response was to this comment.

The best hitters pretty much hit number 3 or possibly 4.
I’ve already shown that to be false. Maybe 10+ years ago but it’s more common now for a team’s best hitters to hit 1 or 2. At no point have I said one way or another if he should lead off. It’s just that, despite you saying otherwise, his spot in the batting order is not uncommon at all.

If it were me I’d go Arraez, Buxton, Polanco, Correa.

Well, Kirilloff is on the IL with wrist soreness - the same wrist he had surgery on last season. Not good.

Larnach back up.

As I type this, Kershaw is mowing down the Twins. Paddack had a rocky 1st inning but pitched better after that. Defense didn't help with 2 errors. But, when you're facing Kershaw, you can't start the game by handing the Dodgers a lead.

Update: Kershaw is throwing a perfect game with 13K. Twins batting in bottom of 7. Kershaw has thrown roughly 80 pitches through 7. Will the Dodgers let him try to go the distance in his 1st start of the season?

Pretty embarrassing today. Probably more Dodgers fans at the game too.

And now the Dodgers go back to back to back. Coaching staff pretty much gave up on this game. With a day off tomorrow and so many pitchers on the roster there’s no reason Rodriguez should be out there for his fourth inning.

Update - Kershaw leaves the game after 7 perfect innings and 80 pitches.

Twins get their 1st hit of the game off of the relief pitcher.

The Dodger fanatic in me is a little peeved Kershaw got pulled but whatever..

F’n baseball. I understand it’s his first start of the year, and I understand he “got a late start” this spring. But good gravy- he’s a vet that should know how to preserve his arm and throw 25 more pitches. Limit his off day work or push his start by a day if you’re worried about overworking him. A perfect game through 7 innings- even a guy like Kershaw only gets that so many times in his career. I’m surprised the competitor in him didn’t demand to go back out. Gladden and Provus were making a good point- that baseball needs some good news and relevancy. A perfect game by one of your best players would provide that.

I saw an analytical deal a few years ago and batting someone first yields significantly more ABs - so I get the logic. I like ARraez first due to the amount of pitches he sees and they he’s the second hardest player to strikeout in all of MLB, per last years stats.

In MLB history, there have been nearly 220,000 games played. A pitcher has tossed a perfect game only 23 times. The record for most strikeouts in a perfect game is 14, shared by Matt Cain and some guy named Sandy Koufax. There hasn't been a perfect game in MLB since 2012.

Where did these Dodger fans came from? I don't think of LA fans as traveling well... is there a bunch of closeted Dodger fans in the Upper Midwest?
There are Dodger fans everywhere, but I would guess that the primary reason that so many of them were at Target Field is that their team only comes through town every few years. This was their one chance to see them in town until when? 2025 or 2026?

I think the reason that they outnumbered Twins fans is because Twins fans have 75 more chances to see their team this year and don't need to sit in those conditions to watch a game. Yesterday was a weekday afternoon game with lousy weather. I would guess that the Twins had very few single game tickets sold for the game. Most season ticket holders don't go to every single game and ones in that type of weather are the ones to skip. There also isn't much buzz about the squad right now.

In today's MLB, complete game shutouts feel about as rare as perfect games.

Best performance by a Dodger lefty in Minnesota since Koufax in 1965.

The great thing is this will change starting next year. They're reducing the number of intradivision games to 56 and each team will now play 46 interleague games. Four against their rivals (for the Twins it'll be the Brewers of course) and then three games each year against the other NL teams alternating ballparks. So every NL team should play at Target Field once every two years now. It's a great move that has kinda gone under the radar.

You are right, I totally missed that. Thanks for the education!

Thanks for the reply. I seriously have never seen them in such numbers in the Midwest. I was very surprised as I haven't seen their NFL franchises with this much of a following!

for all of the complaining about pulling Kershaw - here to me is the only opinion that matters.

from Clayton Kershaw:

"I knew going in that my pitch count wasn't going to be 100, let alone 90 or whatever," he said, later adding, "Blame it on the lockout. Blame it on me not picking up a baseball until January. My slider was horrible the last two innings. It didn't have the bite. It was time."

again - 1st start of the year - 40-degree weather - coming off of a short Spring Training. For a pitcher who had arm problems last year that ended his season early. On a team that has legitimate hopes of winning a World Series.

The Dodger manager did the right thing.

If the Dodgers don't win the World Series, the entire season is essentially a failure. Managing Kershaw's workload with that goal in mind was the right thing to do. He was 100% on board with the move.

Archer in the first game looked very good - a vet like that with previous high level success! If he can be a quality starter I think we’re in a great spot.

When does Kenta return?

Your tendons and ligaments don't care whether you're a veteran or future hall of famer. Zero reason for them to put Kershaw back out in those conditions.

And as far as "good news and relevancy", a perfect game would be a story for maybe 48 hours, and then everyone would forget about it. Heck the only people who would notice are those who already follow the sport. Let's stop with these sky is falling takes with baseball please.

Nolan Ryan once threw 235 pitches in a game. Screwed up his arm so bad that he could only pitch 19 seasons after that shameful display of stamina.

True story. I threw 165 in a JV game in tenth grade- I was Wild Thing - had like 9Ks and 8BBs. Just let it fly
