All Things 2022 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

Tyler Duffey blow the game for the Twins. We need a closeer now. Duffey should not close another game this season.

It's almost like trading your closer the day before the season opener is a bad idea.
There are a lot better options on the team to close than Duffey. He’s now 4 of 13 in his career in save opportunities. I’d give Duran opportunities right away.

Edit: Forgot about Pagan. He should get a chance also.

Agreed. It cannot be Duffy. Way too emotional, as his freak out in dugout showed.

I think you had to give him the first shot at it

I don’t necessarily disagree, in that Duran is most likely “the guy” made for that role, but needs at least some seasoning. The question is, how long will Rocco trot out bad options at closer before he makes a change? Based on previous experience, he’ll wait way too long.

After last season, I don't think he can give it to Duffy too much longer.

I think he is ideally the 7th inning guy - just like not all coordinators and be HCs, all relief pitchers can't be closers

Duffey - if you look at the entire career, has been a better-than-average relief pitcher.

The concern for me was that he was hitting 91 or 92 with the fast ball. During his best years, he was topping out at 95 or 96.

If he's lost something on the fast ball, the curve needs to be lights-out.

as far as the bullpen, I tend to take the opinion that you do not necessarily have to have one guy who always pitches the 9th inning.

depending on the situation, the key out(s) in the game could happen in the 6th or 7th inning - but according to conventional wisdom, you can't use your "closer" then because you have to save him for the 9th inning. I say bleep that - if the game is on the line, put your best pitcher out there. If you give up 3 runs in the 6th, you probably won't have an opportunity to save the game in the 9th.

also want to see what Pagan can do.

Ober is trying to give up this 6-0 lead. Seattle now with in 2. Do we have any pitching at all.

Well, as long as the Twins hit 6 HR every game, they should be fine!

Ober not sharp at the start, but the rest of the staff made it through the game. Alcala scuffled a little bit, but Pagan looked sharp.

Sounds like Bundy starts on Monday. that will be interesting.

Tuesday and Wednesday's games with the Dodgers looking really iffy with the weather forecast.

I'm not getting batting Buxton lead off. What is the reasoning?

Don't you want runners on base when he is up? You've got 8 and 9 hitting in front of him.

This makes no sense. What am I missing?

Last year he had 19 HRs and 32 RBI. That would support your point a little.

I think Pagan should be the next shot at closer. He seems calm and will throw strikes. Duran eventually maybe but you can't ask him to do it right away. Plus Rocco will not want to use him back to back days.

I still laugh when I think about people who said the Buxton contract was a bad move for the Twins.
Wonder what he could do playing buckets or 🏈 . Elite athletes like him are amazing to watch - literally poetry in motion.

Yeah I think if I remember right he was quite a football player in HS too. A guy like him could probably dominate football at that level on his speed alone.

And yeah, he's one of the most fluid pure athletes I've ever seen, everything just looks so effortless.

I little early on that call. It will all be determined on how healthy he stays, regarding those that laughed or who gets the last laugh.

Personally, I thought it was fair for both sides.

Agreed. There were strong opinions on whether to sign him/trade him when the assumption was he was looking for a contract based on his potential (i.e. guaranteed $25mil+/year). But when he signed a contract that had a fair amount of incentives based on MVP voting, plate appearances, etc. I think most agreed it was a good signing.
