All Things 2022 Minnesota Twins In-Season Thread

I bet he's going to San Diego. It's being reported that the Twins are discussing a trade for Chris Paddack.
Supposedly he's "tight" and they didn't want to play him on a wet field. Larnach for Paddack is a bit of an overpay by the Twins.

From what i hearing Larnach maybe heading to San Diego as part of the deal. if this is true. then the Twins really screw this one up. This is bad bad trade.

Closers are a dime a dozen and Rogers is an average one at best.
A dime a dozen eh? Who's closing if they trade him?

When healthy he was far better than average. The only way this makes any sense is if he isn't healthy, but then the trade won't go through.

Further Paddack is nowhere near enough of a return.

Right. Different story if this Paddack was consistent and guaranteed to be a third starter or better. But hes not a for sure thing

Paddack is only 26, and he was considered one of the best young starting pitchers in baseball just 2 years ago. He's struggled the last two seasons but obviously he has talent.

The Twins have a lot of young arms and plenty of options to find another closer. It's the most overrated position in baseball. Rogers has only been their full time closer for one season and that was in 2019. He had 6 blown saves that season as well.

Paddack might be great for 2024. If this is a rebuilding year, by all means, trade Rogers for a young starter. But this front office can't decide if they're coming or going.

You don't sign Carlos Correa to one year contract and then trade your closer the day before opening day for an unproven starter no more of a sure thing than the 5 you already have. If they were going to trade Rogers they should have done it months ago.

Who says he's their closer? He's 31 and wasn't their closer last year, for a reason. He's an average relief pitcher who I'd much rather give up over someone like Larnach.

Who knows if Rogers is even the dedicated closer. Last year they were way more interested in guessing at matchups rather than having one guy close games.

They said he was. And he was their closer last year when he got hurt. I'm not dying on the Tyler Rogers hill. But the timing of this is ridiculous and too late for any contingency other than wishing and hoping one of their unproven relievers can do the job.

Contending teams trying to upgrade don't do so by robbing another area of the big league roster. That's what prospects are for. If they're really trying to win in 2022, they can get another starter without trading their best bullpen arm. If they're not trying to win in 2022 then WTF were the last 3 weeks about.

I don't agree that he's their best bullpen arm. He's very replaceable and the upside of Paddock is well worth it. If this goes through, I think it gives them a better chance of winning this year.

Taylor Rogers is there best bullpen arm end of the story and no Paddock does not give them a better chance of winning end of the story. Bad, Bad trade. Twins are screwing this up end of the story.

I'm not sure it is the end of the story. We probably need to see the entirety of the trade if it goes through. The Twins have struggled putting together a young starting pitching staff. This guy fits that mold. Maybe between Paddock/Ober/Ryan/Winder you get two or three guys that are controllable, cheap, and with them longer than the stopgap types like Bundy or Archer. If they are willing to trade Rogers, it is probably an admission they don't like their chances to outbid the market at the end of this year.

I like the trade. It's definitely worth the gamble of giving up a reliever on his last year of control for a starter with some upside and lots of team control. Pagan is a throw in.

Any thoughts on saying good bye to Rooker? Didnt know he was 27 already

Top 25 players 25 years or younger:

21. Alex Kirilloff (Twins OF)

Baumann rank: NR
Kram rank: NR
Lindbergh rank: 15th
Wagner rank: 14th

Argument for: Kirilloff’s 2021 slash line is a lie. For one thing, the rookie played through a torn ligament in his right wrist that eventually led to season-ending surgery in July. For another, despite the injury, he hit better than his surface stats suggested: Kirilloff’s expected slugging percentage, based on his quality of contact, was 118 points higher than his actual .423 mark, the majors’ second-biggest gap. He also skipped Triple-A prior to his promotion. Given improved health, better batted-ball luck, and added experience, his stats should befit the big bat he’s capable of being.—Lindbergh

Argument against: Kirilloff projects as a below-average runner and fielder; FanGraphs prospect analyst Eric Longenhagen wrote before last season that Kirilloff was “trending toward first base” for his long-term positional fit. That means the 24-year-old has to absolutely rake to be a valuable player—which is why it’s so worrying that his on-base percentage last season started with a “2.” A .251/.299/.423 slash line isn’t going to cut it as a baseline for a corner bat, even with some natural improvement baked in. —Kram
