Baldwin Edits Top 5

Rutgers’ stay in Wade Baldwin’s top five didn’t last long.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard from St. Joe’s-Metuchen (N.J.) told SNY.tv Friday he is replacing Rutgers with Florida State after getting an offer from FSU.

“I replaced it with Florida State,” he told SNY.tv.

He’s now considering Virginia Tech, Florida State, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Pitt.

Baldwin has set visits to Virginia Tech (Sept. 7), Florida State (Sept. 14), Minnesota (Sept. 21) and Vanderbilt (Sept. 27).

To bring this thread back on topic... this was posted elsewhere, though I'd share it here.. question was asked if Wade Baldwin is similar to Andre Hollins:

Quite different from Dre. Andre is an excellent shooter - Baldwin is not. Dre gets very few of his points around the rim - Baldwin is the opposite.

Baldwin is also a bit bigger, especially upper body strength compared to Dre at the same age. Baldwin's got a nice wingspan and that along with some physicality means I think he's got a chance to be a good defender in college, and cover a range of opponents.

Personality wise probably a lot different too.. a little more flash and attitude from Baldwin. Not noting that as a positive or negative in this case, just an observation.

Overall, I think of Baldwin as more of a solid, all around type of contributor to a team.. whereas Andre can be, and arguably has been, a star.

That’s an interesting idea, Joe, and one I’ve decided could be kind of fun, if highly speculative (keep that in mind, please). To keep things a little bit simpler, let’s limit the list to 2014 recruits, shall we? Since it doesn’t make much sense for me to rank these guys’ talent level (that is everywhere), I’ve just ranked the likelihood the Gophers will get them on.
Not every 2014 recruit the Gophers have offered is on this list because, simply, I haven’t talked with all of them, certainly not them all extensively, and with many offered recently, it’s tough to get a practical reading on them at this point. At the same time, remember that this a ranking as of today. As with any situation, those rankings could change substantially depending on what happens with the others. So, if the Gophers sign one of these point guards, the others become much less likely. Etc. Etc.

1. JP Macura: (3-star) – I believe playing for his home-state school would be a draw for Macura, who showed up for a Gophers practice earlier this week. Brad Stevens leaving Butler, which initially seemed like the favorite, kind of helps redirect his interest. Macura has also talked about visits to Purdue, Iowa State, Kansas State, Creighton, Vanderbilt and Xavier.
2. Lourawls Nairn Jr.: (4-star) – I think the Gophers have a good shot with Nairn, who would seem to be a good fit. He has said that Minnesota is among the short list of schools contacting him the most. With Ja’Quan Newton off the board and Josh Perkins potentially leaning elsewhere, Nairn could be the No. 1 non-Tyus point guard target going forward.

After reviewing all of our offers my guess at who the gophers get for 2014 would be 1 PG 2 SG and 1 PF...

Those 4 would be:

PG - Lourawls Nairn Jr.
SG - Wade Baldwin
SG - J.P. Macura
PF - Reid Travis

Out of the 30+ we've offered that's who I see us getting.
I know this would be a very good recruiting class, but I just think we've got a great shot at all those guys & that's who we'll land.

What are the chances that lourawls goes to either Kansas or K-state? I would think that they would have the best shot at him but I hope I'm wrong

I think that's a pretty accurate list, although I'm not very confident we'll get Travis. If we could get those 4 by the spring and still be in the mix for Vaughn that'd be ideal. If we somehow get him, room can be made. If not, that's still a really good class for Pitino's first year.

That would be an excellent class and would be the best we've seen since the Royce White/Rodney Williams/Trevor Mbakwe class which ultimately fizzled.

I think he is a contingency plan for Kansas. Don't know about K-State.

Definitely a back up plan for Kansas. I like our odds with him because of how close he's become with Pitino & Johnson - they've made him a huge priority, my guess is because they don't like our odds with Jones (obviously), Perkins, Snider & MaGee (I would rather have Nairn than MaGee anyway). He's so quick and strong and would be a perfect 4 year player (as long as he didn't grow a bunch) for Pitino to mold. Plus he's a good kid!

PiPress: Gophers basketball: Dre Mathieu apparently clears obstacle to U

"He passed all his tough ones and did very well," Dreiling said. "The couple that he needed were tougher classes, but he did good."

Mathieu was a walk-on reserve at Morehead State to begin his college career, but developed into a starter at the end of his freshman season (2011-12). He then transferred to Central Arizona in hopes of earning a Division I scholarship and averaged 17.1 points, 6.5 assists, 6.1 rebounds and two steals a game as a sophomore.

"I know that his size is something people question, but he can handle the physicality," said Dreiling, now the coach at Midland College in Texas. "He's already coming in as one of the most electric guards in the country, as far as just speed and quickness. I think there's not going to be anybody who is much faster than he is."

Just a fallback... But still bad news
