All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

If someone is disappointed with this year's class they unrealistically expected us to get one (or more) of the Big 3, which was never going to happen. Also, our class isn't complete yet so it's silly to already decide whether it's a good class or bad class. The 3 guys we do have signed are all going to fill a need and should contribute immediately.

Really? Reid not coming here when the night before we considered him practically a lock was never ever going to happen? Also besides him we were or are considered the front runner at certain points in time for at least 5 top 100 guys so i wouldn't consider that unrealistic. Its just like the Ragnow reaction, just because a guy does't pick our school in the end doesn't mean he was never ever going to come here, guys like Tyus are an exception to this statement but we were in it to the end for a lot of talented players this year.

Also Piper is not a 4 star, he is not considered a top 100 player by anyone.

Piper is a 4-star according to ESPN. He is a high 3-star according to 247, and he's a 3-star according to Rivals. So, yes he is considered a 4-star by some. He is more of a consensus high 3-star. However, the rankings by all the services are not final yet.

He really enjoyed his visit. Were right in the mix.

Someone tweeted it is between MN and Washington with South Carolina also in the mix. Said our chances go way up if Romar is fired.

That could sway the other way though if Washington gets a coach that infuses energy into the program. With Romar he knows what he's getting, which includes a coach immediately on the hot seat.

Go Gophers!!

He is not a top 100 player in ESPN and only has a grade of 80 so i don't even consider him a 4 star on that site according to their rankings even though they gave him 4 stars, to be legit 4 stars but when you consider that fact that he isn't a 4 star by any other site or not even a top 150 player on rivals it is just silly to call piper a "4 star"

Piper would be a huge get for us. Period. Instead of ripping him and his "ranking", you guys should be hoping we get him.

Who really gives a **** about rankings when it's all said and done. Recruiting sites mis-rank players all of the time.

ESPN ranks him as a 4 star, so why would it matter whether you consider him to be a 4 star? 247 ranks him as a top 150 player and gave him a ranking of 89......which is one point off a 4 star on their site as well. Either way, he's right on the edge. To say that "nobody" considers him a 4 star was simply an incorrect statement.

1 thing to keep in mind, kids who have not yet committed are ranked higher by recruiting services because it gets fans something to get excited about and drives visitors to their site, it serves the recruiting service no good to update guy like josh martin since he has already committed and only one fan base cares about it. If Josh Martin was still available his ranking would be much higher than it is now. They justify their raise in rankings by pointing out the schools that are on the recruit now, but in reality all it is, is schools moving on after missing out on their original guys.

My initial reaction when Cohen announced he was let out of his LOI was that Piper would feel more pressure to make a decision. Not sure if his timing has anything to do with that, but I like our chances.

I think he was making the decision then no matter the situation, it was always believed in Washington that he wanted to wait until after the season to make a decision(NY trip is end of it for his high school career), with a lot local reporter saying that he didn't want to disappoint the local fan base by committing to MN, he wants to keep the focus on rainer beach and their chance at a national title, which the entire state of Washington has rallied behind.

You don't consider him a 4 star on ESPN, even though ESPN clearly has him ranked as a 4 star player? In what world does this make sense? He's not a 4 star on Rivals, Scout, or 247, but he is a 4 star on ESPN. Any way you slice it, Piper is one of the best available players left this Spring and would be a great addition to the Gophers.

Matt Gravett all over Gopher recruiting right now-

Great chance rn. More to the story, which we'll have on G247 later RT @TheBallaholics: @GravettMatt What's our chances with Sandy Cohen?

UMN or UW. Gopher lock if Romar is fired. http://t.co/vPEpXA3IZw RT @bhagen4904: @GravettMatt any feel to where ya think he's leaning?

Great news. I'd take both as well as a JUCO or transfer PF.

Minnesota, Creighton and Oklahoma, according to what 247 shows. Other than Louisville, last fall, he has only taken an official visit to Minnesota.
