All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Don't get me wrong, if they commited today, I'd be all over it.

Just wondering if it would come down to Perkins/Vaughn or Whitehead/Newton, who would be the best option? I'd go with the first to commit, especially if Vaughn waits until Spring period to sign

Do we have any indication of Whitehead or Newton being a one and done like Vaughn intends to be?

Has Vaughn even said he plans to be a one-and-done? I believe he's capable of doing so, I just haven't heard him say so, though admittedly I don't believe I read the last Gopherhole interview with him.

IIRC in one of those ask.fm (or something like that) things where people ask you questions someone asked him and he said he was planning on being one and done. It was quite a while ago though.

OK, now I selfishly hope that Kaleb Joseph commits to Syracuse soon. That would pretty much put us in the driver's seat, since he and Newton are both pure PGs.

I feel pretty good about our chances even with Syracuse in the mix, but man, this would make my day if we got these guys!

And from some brief research, it seems like Joseph is very likely to end up at Syracuse.

Wow hadnt been on gopherhole all day and I come on to see this all this it made my day! Such high hopes for gopher basketballs future!

Getting a couple of guys like this and then capping this class off with others such as Travis and Vaughn, coupled with Pitino's passion could bring a Musselman era atmosphere back to the Barn. Sure would be fun!

Very fun! Can't wait for people to start commiting!

What a potential recruiting class. 2 5 stars and 2 4 stars.

EDIT: assuming the big man you speak of is Reid Travis.

That would be quite amazing indeed. This is going to be an interesting development that could make the Gopher fan base excitement of the Clem years seem mild.

Some Minnesota fans have been hitting up both of these guys on Twitter and Newton has been re-tweeting some of it. There's also this:

+1 good sign..looks to me like newton is trying to do a little recruting

Boy this would be a great start to little Pitino's time here! If we get Whitehead and Newton I will be extremely happy, then we hit Reid Travis hard and go after another big. Or do we go after a guard? I don't know, all I can say is that I am probably overly optimistic about gophers bball right now.

These kids may realize how big of stars they can be if they come to the U. We are starving for some talent and they have it. All it takes is two kids to team up and think, "what school should we be stars at?"

If they are considering the Gophers, I doubt any other fan base would be as excited to have them as us.

I have no idea what "follow back bro" means. However, from a national recruit standpoint it occurs to me that a recruit will understand that a big recruiting class by Pitino here will get plenty of national press because of the Pitino name. If Pitino hits a big class the Gophers could get a fair amount of national coverage for a while. This could become a cool place to be for more than just the weather. And that first class will be remembered as the guys that did it.

Maybe we could bring back the Globetrotter warm up?

That would be top 3 class material right there.

Whitehead and Newton situation will be a great one to watch.!!

Ya. But isn't it fun?

i doubt we get both vaughn and whitehead, if i had to choose i would take whitehead since he will also bring newton and whitehead is more likely to stay at least 2 years

At the end of the day, I want whoever wants to be here - whoever wants to wear the maroon and gold.

It takes a special person to recognize the potential of a situation. Maybe Whitehead is that special person. We want that kind of special.

pitino said he would be willing to play 4 guards... if thats true than no doubt newton whitehead and vaughn are all realistic

I wonder if UCLA will be in the mix as well. Rivals lists Whitehead as having high interest in them.

Verbal Commits.com is listing Minnesota as extending a 6/29/2013 offer to 4* 6-5 2014 SG Carlos Morris out of FL. He is ranked 147 in the nation and #35 SG. He has a decent list of offers.

Carlos is actually a JUCO kid, so the 4*, 147 in the nation is actually from 2012. His highlights on YouTube are pretty impressive, not super explosive going to the rack, but has a really nice touch and is a smooth athlete. Kind of like Austin Hollins, but with less bounce, better handles and a smoother looking jumper. I did read that the Gophers interest in him might not be as strong as it was at one time.
