Before leavin practice at the high performance academy I asked a person in the know with the big 3 if we had a dance at any of them, and he said I can tell you that Tyus Jones will not be a gopher. He then stated Reid Travis will also be hard to get because of Stanford and Duke, but he never ruled the gophers out. Rashad Vaughn is who he said was most likely to be a gopher due to Vaughn wanting to be the man and that he is a very selfish player.

thanks. this is pretty consistent with what most people are hearing, so glad we still have a shot at two of them. i realize that vaughn will have more initial appeal and is the "sexier" recruit as of now, will thrill fans and would give us an nba player pretty quickly, but if i had to choose one of the big three (now that tyus is out) i'd take reid travis. i think he'll be an absolute monster throughout his career, he's a program guy, very unselfish, carries himself well, will be here 3 or 4 years and gets us into the de la salle pipeline a bit which hasn't always been fruitful for the u.

No problem I also asked this man what he thought of Pitino, and he said he is young and hasn't established himself enough yet and this is y he has missed out on highly ranked recruits this year. He also stated that Pitino is allowed a pass being he was hired so late to get a long lasting relationship with these 2014 recruits. He then ended with he has a hands to get a couple of prominent recruits next year and that he will do just fine with the Gophers.

Interesting tweet from Ryan James....he was asked by Jerry Meyer if the possible commitment of Trevon Blueitt to Xavier would impact J.P. Macura.....

Doesn't this just mean that there is no chance of JP deciding to decommit even if Trevon decides to go to Xavier?

Right. I've read a couple tweets and maybe a comment or two on GH that suggested Macura might decommit if Blueitt committed to Xavier because he wouldn't have as much playing time. According to James, that would not be the case.

Forget about JP that ship has sailed. And if he decides down the road to transfer tell him no thanks.

+100. The last thing you want is for local players thinking that they can use the U as a backup plan in case the grass isn't so green at another school. The local kids would think that they never have to commit to the U because the U will always be waiting for them if they change their mind.

The local players, just like everyone else, needs to understand the scholarships at the U are a very coveted honor and you better jump on it before someone else takes it.

My latest projections, trying to read between all the lines:

Jones = Kansas
Travis = Duke
Vaughn = UNLV

Travis probably Gophers' best chance?

That's fine if he does come back, as long as he doesn't become Kris Humphries 2.0.

Take Macura out of this conversation for a second.....That sounds good in theory, but I'm not sure that should always be the case. By that definition the Gophers shouldn't have allowed Mbakwe to play for us either because he went to Marquette first. (unless the Gophers didn't recruit him initially -- somebody can correct me if I'm wrong).

It also works both ways. Should Nate Mason tell us thanks but not thanks because he is a "backup plan" to Tum Tum who was a "backup plan" to Josh Perkins who was a "backup plan" to Jaquan Newton/Kaleb Joseph/Quentin Snider/others <-----not sure on the order, but you get my point.

In theory it would be nice to spurn any recruit that comes back to us in a hypothetical situation like the one we are talking about with JP Macura. Maybe Macura might not meet my threshold, but if Tum Tum or Whitehead called me today and said he had a change of heart, I'm picking up the phone.

If Duke misses out on Jones/Okafor, I think it would be very likely that Travis ends up at Duke.

Kris Humphries became what he was here because there was zero talent around him. He was so far and away the best player on that team- as a frosh - that it was amazing. Vaughn would come onto a team with good players and experience.

No. Humphries was an extremely selfish player who had no interest in being a teammate. He and his father ran roughshod over Monson and the team because Monson was weak and desperate, and Humphries wanted a personal showcase for the NBA. Coach K was happy to let him come here.

Humphries was not a selfish player because of his lack of surrounding talent. This is a guy who had less tham one assist-per-game and a bad reputation as a teammate and person since high school as he was booed at his high school graduation at Hopkins while Dan Coleman was cheered.

Not saying Hump wasn't selfish. I am saying that had there been talent around him the coach would have had choices and could have shaped him. The coach had little choice but to play him and work through the issues. That team wasn't going to win either way.

That same 'talentless' team minus Humphries and plus Vincent Grier went to the NCAA tournament the following year.

PG - Boone
SG - Hargrow
SF - Johnson
PF - Bauer
PF/C - Humphries

and

PG - Robinson
SG - Lawson
SF - Grier
PF - Coleman
C - Hagen

Not really the same team. Plus the tournament team had Tollackson, Stamper, and Tucker, none of whom were there the prior year.

I dont have a rivals account but Kline knows more than most people so if someone does itd be interesting to see how or if any of these affect gophers recruits

Don't forget the Molinari factor.

It'd argue the team the year before had more talent.

Disagree completely, that was a team that Monson lost and it should have cost him his job, they had Hargrow, Boone, Bauer, Robinson, Ben Johnson, along with Humphries. Coleman was a freshman that was decent, Gaines a sophmore that had some ability. Not great but certainly decent talent, had they had someone that could manage and coach they could easily have been middle of the Big Tem.

Yes. Maturi should have cut the cord after this season. This team was pathetic. It was pathetic what Monson let the Humphries' get away with. No father and player should ever be able to do what they got away with. That alone was a fireable offense not to mention the horrible team performance.

+1 Humphries was indeed the only option. True he wasn't much on sharing but he was in fact the only good option most of the time. I have always felt he was a scapegoat for a bad team. The well warn oft repeated bromide that we would have been better without him is just absurd.

so ummmm can we talk about 2014 recruiting and not humphries now? sorry to quote you sec, but it was just the last one on the topic.
