All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

I think the staff clearly believes they need a PG in the '14 class. Pitino and co. wouldn't have offered ~10 guys at the position if they didn't badly want a PG in this class. There's no position on the floor where the Gophers have offered more players than at the point. I hope they land Tum Tum, but if they don't, I assume they will continue to recruit Josh Gray (Juco/ex Tx Tech), the Wisconsin kid who is mentioned in this thread, and possibly explore the Juco ranks beyond Gray.

I like this Josh Martin kid, and have since he was first brought up, but he doesn't look like a 4.

1-10 rating on chances of getting them (*Rivals Player Ratings)

Tyus Jones(2)....1 if mudiay and okafor sign to kentucky and duke goes a different way
Reid Travis(40)...7....good chance as long as he doesnt get blown away on a visit
Rashad Vaughn(7)....4... chances have increased since pitino and company but still a long way to go...since hes deciding in the spring it will take a good season to lure him in
JP Macura(126).... 8.5... Minnesota is arguably his best offer and its his home state...plus fits great to the system
Quentin Snider(31)....1.5...pitino offered and was probably part of the reason he signed to lousiville in the first place but it seems hes a longshot
Josh Perkins(28)...3... all things point to gonzaga but somehow we made the final 3 without a visit so who knows
Paul White(51).... 6.....Think we have a good shot....people seam leniant after the injury but if anyone knows how to deal with it...its a pitino (ware) would be the backup plan to travis
Tum Tum(61)..8.5.....Probably best realistic option at pg.....can get to the lane easily but struglles shooting the ball...still would be a higher recruit than any of tubbys last 3 years
Issah whitehead(17)...5.5....we werent the favorites 3 days ago but things seemed to have changed...looks like main battle may be vs indiana (robert johnson visits before)
Wade baldwin(117)...6.... would be a backup plan but we definitely have a good shot at him
Josh Martin(NR)...(if we recruit hard enough hes ours) Back up plan but seems like he would fit the sytem
Alex Robinson(71)..1....super athletic but think were pretty much outta the mix

There is a few other names....feel free to add the ones i forgot........Go Gophs #Pitino4President

Can anyone provide any context as to how many other B1G teams have commits for 2014? (too lazy to look)

Do most B1G rosters fill up during the early signing period in November?

Are the Ohio States of the world typically done recruiting in November?

Is the fact that we have zero commits at this point perfectly normal? For a new coach? Historically for Minnesota?

And lastly, what's my favorite color?

Zags Blog Josh Martin Article:

After the game, the 6-foot-7 power forward out of Bothell (WA) told SNY.tv he was focusing on four schools: Florida State, Pittsburgh, Minnesota and Oklahoma State.

He will take officials to Florida State (Sept. 14), Minnesota (Sept. 20) and Oklahoma State (Sept. 27).

On Minnesota and Oklahoma State: “Same thing, man. Basically, the reasons I chose those schools was for all the same reasons. They’re going to develop me as a perimeter player. They’re fast-paced teams and they have a good morale around the team. Everybody’s a family at each school.”

As for a timeframe on a decision, Martin said: “Hopefully before high school season starts but really whenever it feels right I’m going to make my decision.”

Assuming a 1 is basically no chance, 5 is 50/50, and 10 is basically signed, sealed and delivered...

I'd put Travis at 5. (50/50) Been very tight lipped about his recruitment.
Splitting hairs, but Tyus at 2 or 3. I'd love to see what happens if Okafor decides Duke isn't for him.
Vaughn definitely higher than 4. Think we have better than 50/50 shot. Maybe 6.
Lots of competition for Paul White ... no reason to think he's higher than 3 or 4 (which isn't bad, just a reality of recruiting an out of state guy with lots of suitors).

Not sure how you'd rate the plan B guys in this context.

Looks like they'll be spending a lot of time together...

STrib blog: Minnesota came in late to Lourawls Nairn's recruitment, but has impressed quickly

With official visits approaching, Nairn said that it was Minnesota, of the three, recruiting him the hardest right now.

So how did a program so new to the process break a top three for Nairn, who was also offered by Kansas, Kansas State, Creighton, Iowa and Arkansas?

“I think just because of the way they came about it,” Nairn said. “Ever since they saw me, I’ve been in contact with them just about every day, coach [Richard] Pitino and assistant coach [Ben] Johnson. It was just consistent. And I felt like they were supposed to be there. It’s all of the assistant coaches, and not even everything about basketball – just random stuff, how am I doing, how was my day, stuff like that.”

- Travis is not a 7. Maybe a 5 - us and Stanford are his favorites.
- Feeling just as confident about landing Vaughn as I am about landing Travis.
- Paul White at 6? No way...UCONN is still recruiting White fairly hard despite his arm injury.
- Tum Tum at 8.5? Sheeeeet, he has a standing offer at Indiana and his best friend plays at Oklahoma. Both Oklahoma and Indiana have been recruiting him since sophomore year. I understand that Nairn is a "perfect fit" for Pitino's system and that we've been recruiting him the hardest lately, but you should not have the same confidence level for Macura and Nairn...if Macura's an 8.5, Nairn is a 4.5.
- Whitehead is an interesting dude. Syracuse is out, and Indiana came into the picture kind of late. I've heard different opinions about whether or not Arizona is still in play, but it seems like UCLA is our main competition right now. I REALLY BELIEVE that we have a better chance at landing Whitehead than a lot of people think.
- Wade Baldwin is likely Vanderbilt-bound. So, IMO, not a 6.
- Curious why you think Martin will be a Gopher if we recruit him hard enough. He has a top 4 of (no order) Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Florida State, and Pitt. Those aren't schools to scoff at. He also has a standing offer from Washington, his hometown school.
- As you said, we're out of the mix for Alex Robinson.

Quentin Snider has several college visits lined up

Scott Snider, the player’s father, told the Herald-Leader on Saturday night that the family will take an unofficial to Cincinnati sometime this week, then fly to UCLA for an official visit starting Friday. The following weekend will include an unofficial visit to Memphis. The Sniders have also set up an official visit to UConn for Sept. 20 and an unofficial visit to Illinois for Sept. 27.

Snider also has offers from Oklahoma State, Marquette, Minnesota, Southern Cal and several others. Scott Snider said Indiana wanted his son to visit this weekend, but the family decided to take a couple of days to relax after a hectic summer of travel.

“Indiana and Michigan State have both called a little bit more than they had, here in the past week or so,” the elder Snider said.

Michigan State extended a scholarship offer Sunday night, Scott Snider confirmed to the Herald-Leader.

2014 Paul White Working Hard Despite Injury

That same approach is in effect once again for White, who is entering his senior year of high school with a recently broken arm. An attempt to block a dunk went awry; White landed badly on his arm, and is slated to be out until early October. With upcoming official visits scheduled, including one to Arizona on September 6, an injury might be a discouraging setback, but White’s attitude is one of determination.

“I’ve still been working out,” he says. “I’ve actually been working a lot on my left hand.”

slightly different spin on Wade Baldwin from Joe Martino, sportswriter of the Courier News and Home News Tribune in New Jersey

Baldwin is set to visit Vanderbilt on Wednesday and attend the Commodores’ football season opener against Ole Miss Thursday, and according to a source very close to the situation the combo guard ranked, No. 117 nationally by Rivals.com, could commit on the spot.

Later in the blog he says that he doesn't expect it to happen this week....

Arizona got a commitment from PF Craig Victor, I hope this improves our chances with White, they were one of his final five and is taking a visit there.

STrib: Gophers target Josh Martin thinks Minnesota can help develop him into an all-around, NBA-caliber player

What has intrigued you about Minnesota? Obviously, staff-wise, I like coach Pitino. He’s the son of Rick Pitino, so he’s going to have a good connection with lots of people, NBA-wise and international-wise, so I like that aspect. And I like the fact that he’s told my dad he’s going to work with me personally – usually schools have individual trainers that they give to their players, but he told me he would train me personally, which is a big part of that relationship between player and coach, which I appreciated. And I like the fact that they’re going to play me at more of a 3-spot than a post player, which I should have been developing when I was a little younger, but, you know, I was always the tallest kid out there, so they wanted to put me in the post. But with my size, at the next level, I’m not really a post player. So what intrigued me a lot is they were going to give me the opportunity to play a lot more on the outside.

Definitely encouraging to hear. I'm starting to like our chances with Martin.

Ryan James tweeted that JP, Reid, and Tum Tum will all be at the game on Thursday. Hopefully they have a fun time with Austin, Dre and the rest of the squad. Amir Coffey and Illikainen will also be on campus. Big day for Gopher hoops!

Lets hope that those 50,000 people and 8,00 students projected in attendance are rockin the Bank! And a little competitive football wouldn't hurt the impression on the recruits either. Oh, and the usual, great weather!

Colson is a guy not being talked about much, but I think he will be a really good college player. He put up a lot of points on Reid Travis when they played in Vegas. Very solid scorer, despite being a bit undersized.
