Go Gophers!!

Tyus doesn't mention Gophers. First school mentioned by Whitehead is Indiana then Syracuse, first school mentioned by Vaughn is Kentucky then North Carolina.

Kuzma seemed like an interesting prospect, but it seems like he was quite a ways down the Gophers wish list on the wing.

Doesn't sound all that excited, but why read into what an 17 year old thinks...

This whole recruiting thing sucks... Everybody it seems is willing to consider us and say they have us in their final 3,5,10,15, etc., but when things get down to it, nobody actually wants to come to college here and play basketball. Recruiting is such a fake process, and very few recruits actually tell the truth when it comes to their recruitment.

I think you might be right, but I still feel the neighborhood kid will come. I posted awhile back, Coach P. and staff with sign several players we still haven't heard of. The fat lady hasn't picked out the song, much less started to sing. I think we are going to be very happy with Coach P.'s first class.
I agree. You need to recruit these kids for three years to have a real good shot at them. I too think Tum,Tum will be our best chance to get a four star guy. I'm afraid he will pick Oklahoma though. And I get upset with people being too negative.

Sun Times: Whitney Young's Paul White opens it back up

The recruiting process always has some twists and turns. So just think of the current recruiting status of Whitney Young's Paul White's as just that -- a little twisting and turning as he tries to make the best decision for himself and find the ideal fit.

The versatile 6-9 forward, who teams with the nation's No. 1 player in the country, Jahlil Okafor, for coach Tyrone Slaughter's likely top-ranked team in Illinois, narrowed his list to five schools last month. The list included Arizona, UConn, DePaul, Minnesota and Georgetown.

Now the talented White, who is recovering nicely from a broken arm he suffered in July on the AAU circuit, is opening his recruitment back up.

White has personally spoken with each program on his initial list to let them know of his decision to open his recruitment back up. He has not ruled out any school that was on the initial list. In fact, as of now he plans on taking previously scheduled visits to Georgetown, UConn, Minnesota and DePaul. However, the window has opened up for other schools to get back involved.

Can't seem to get any good news lately.....

You'd think things would have to turn around at some point, we are way overdue for some good news. I don't know if any of the programs on Paul White's initial list can feel good about landing him now.

I think this class is critical for Pitino, even though it's just his first year. We've had a couple years in a row of bottom 1/3 of the conference type classes and that trend really needs to be reversed immediately.

You can't fault Richard's efforts or his ability to get on so many elite recruits' final lists, but this ongoing process highlights the importance and the difficulty of getting the fish into the boat. It also makes a person appreciate the job Tubby did to close the deals on out-of-state four-star recruits Sampson and Joseph.

What I think you're seeing is a gifted recruiter doing a great job of selling himself, the program and the situation, but it's hard for a sought-after athlete to take the leap of faith that this thing is just about to take off, especially when they have their pick of more sure-thing programs. It's been too long since our program has made any real noise, and the longer that goes on, the bigger leap of faith it becomes.

It'll be crucial for Pitino to demonstrate his coaching prowess this season and get this team to achieve. That's what Clem had to do. I think of what Brenda Oldfield (Frese) did her first and only year here, taking a roster that had underachieved and making it hum. It didn't take long and she had created an amazing amount of buzz. That's what you hope for when you hire a coach. It'll be tougher for Pitino, though, considering the talent just lost to graduation. I don't expect that kind of turnaround, just because Littlejohn was a complete dumpster fire, and how could Oldfield NOT improve on that. But if Richard can get this squad looking like they know what they're doing, he'll have that as a real selling point, which is more than just words from a salesman.

I think it's too early to tell whether Pitino is having a tough time "closing" yet. When kids wait past early August to sign, they usually take a visit or two before committing. Nairn has been the only kid to visit officially in the 2014 class. We just have to hope that kids like White and Whitehead make their visits and Coach Pitino can get one of the Big 3 to stay home. I think it's going to be tough to get this program going without infusing some talent immediately. If Pitino can get this team to the tournament, that would certainly demonstrate his coaching prowess, but is that realistic at this point? He's taking over (an admittedly underachieving) 8-10 B1G team that is losing arguably 3 of its top 6 players.

The Gophers/Pitino still are in a decent spot, something (or more accurately someone) should break their way.

This is only the purest of speculation, but what I suspect might be happening is that Minnesota enters these elite recruits' picture on the strength of a good pitch and copious attention from Pitino and his staff, and they're impressed with the coaches and their message. Once the Gophers make final lists, we start to become the target of negative recruiting by the other finalists, and who knows what all they're saying, but I can guess. I'd say we're an easier target than most programs because of our lack of recent success, lesser facilities, relatively unproven coaching regime and brutal winter weather. Again, this is merely speculative, but it would explain the pattern we've been seeing of recruits getting very warm on us and then cooling considerably after they've named their finalists.

I think this could be spot on.

Either that or they havent seen this coach's team play a regular season game. To get an out of state top 50 guy without coaching 1 game at a major school would be somekind of salesmanship. I would love it but I am not holding out hope for it. Peoples expectations given our situation is a bit out of reality.

I tend to agree with this as well. On the bright side, most of the current negatives against the Gophers that you mentioned are things that can/should improve (except the weather). I think the most important part is that Pitino and his staff seem to be relentless recruiters and have a good pitch that is already proving to be effective. That's not something that all coaches/universities are going to be able to match in my opinion.

Macura is sounding more and more like a lock. If he commits in the next week or two, hopefully that starts a little bit of a domino effect. JP has made himself a known commodity becoming a fringe top 100 recruit. Other guys will take notice of that. And while the Duke/Travis news sucks, we still have Paul White and Josh Martin taking officials here. They're a downgrade from Reid but they're still talented players with very good offer lists.
