All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Did anyone realize Whitehead and Perkins were friends? We all knew Vaughn and Perkins were and that Newton and Whitehead were, but Whitehead & Perkins is news to me... Obviously it may not mean anything, but it's still very interesting!

Everyone knows everyone (don't take that literally - but many guys play against each other, are with each other at camps, etc). "Package deal" talk is just guys saying words 95% of the time. "Friends", "my boy", "my brother", etc. talk often just means, "I know the guy and he's good peoples"... most often not news or meaningful in terms of recruiting.

I understand, just thought it was interesting to see the pair tweeting back and forth!

Another note about the 2014 class and a guy to keep in mind who Minnesota has offered is Josh Martin... Looks like a perfect fit for Pitino; he's quick, athletic & can hit the 3 from the looks of it!

Yep... I'm on twitter, and all these top recruits are giving shout outs to like 50 different recruits they call their bros, or "bruh"s, Lil homies, fam, cuz, all the different slang words for guys they may have just met and been around for one or two weekend tournaments. Means nothing.

That Crystall Ball feature on 247 is just stupid. Most of the "prognosticators" are simply following one or two major writers, like Jerry Meyer. When someone like Meyer changes his pick (often based on little more than a twitter message, like for Newton and Whitehead in June), then everyone else follows suit. And yeah, who cares if you made the "right pick" when you've said one guy for 2 months and then change your pick the day before he decides?

I really wish they would just drop that feature. It's dumb and very misleading.

The thing I do like a about 247 is the feature that tells you what schools are warm and cool

Minnesota Offered? last i knew they were just recruiting him.

According to the D1 circuit on twitter we've offered, but rivals & ESPN don't show an offer so I'm not sure...

2014 Team Takeover (DC) guard Phil Booth has committed to Villanova.

Listed as a SG but is known as a versatile guard that can play both guard spots. Could potentially help us with Newton?

ESPN even lists him as a PG. Interesting.

Could go either way. Villanova plays a lot of guards. I have no idea who's on their roster currently but I would think there's still room for Newton to get minutes, especially since Bridges and Booth aren't true PGs like Newton. Who knows, it may make Nova more attractive to him.

Adam Zagoria refers to him as a PG as well.

If he wants to come in and "run the show" from day one, Minnesota seems to be a better option than Villanova.

I would definitely agree with that statement. Booth is very good and he would have to compete for with him from day 1. As of right now, he would come in and start right away in Minnesota's backcourt.

If they get a commitment from one of the SG guards they are recruiting then I would think Villinova would be an unlikely place for Newton, as is it would still be a possibility, can't hurt the Gophers chances though that is for sure.

Article about Newton strongly considering Syracuse and that they will be on his final list.

"Newton, a Class of 2014 guard whose stock has skyrocketed this summer, has an Orange scholarship offer. His Neumann-Goretti coach, Carl Arrigale, said Newton likely will narrow his list in the upcoming days and that Syracuse would make Newton's cut. Newton is also strongly considering Villanova and Miami on his list of potential college destinations. Other schools of interest include Minnesota, Oregon and UCLA."

Not too worried about Syracuse unless Kaleb Joseph commits to Providence or WVU.

Ehh, we don't need to worry about that. Joseph is a lock to Cuse. In other news, Rashad and UNC appear to be moving on from each other per Jerry Meyer. And Phil Booth is primarily a point guard, so well see if that scares Newton away or not

I follow D1Circuit also and from what i've seen they seem legit (only one that has legitimate stats and videos from eybl)... so unless they muffed it up...it seems like they might be a step ahead of kilne, goodman, telep, and bossi on this one...either way the kld looks legit and i agree he seems like he woud fit pitinos system nicely.....also looked at martin's twitter and he retweeted that same tweet so if it wasnt true i wouldnt see why he would do that

Did I just not pay attention (likely) or does it seem like Pitino offers at a higher rate than Tubby? I just don't remember this slew of offers by Tubby.

Ryan James gets real in latest podcast. Paraphrashing for his kind way of making his point, he says the predictions they make on 247 are stupid, like what we all think.

*That being said he makes some predictions, and in short here it goes.
1) He predicts Jones, Travis, Newton, and Whitehead go elsewhere
2) He predicts the Gophers will land Rashad Vaughn and Lourawls Nairn.

*I don't know about you guys but I would be VERY happy if we ended up with #7 Vaughn and #61 Nairn when all is said and done. This is one of the few realistic gopher recruiting predictions I've heard.
PG- Nairn SG- Dre Hollins SF- Vaughn (now that's a backcourt!)

I'd take it gameday, although to me Travis should be the most important recruit because of his position. Losing him would be worst than the others IMO

Gopher PG target:

TheBluejaycafe (@TheBluejayCafe) tweeted at 9:13 PM on Tue, Jul 30, 2013:According to @lourawlsnairn - he will look to trim his list to "4 or 5 teams" in the coming days. #Creighton

Kind of wondering what the hold up is with Joseph. Many have said he's a Syracuse lean for a long time now, and with WVU and Providence being the other two schools, I'd think a Syracuse commitment would've happened by now. I wonder if they prefer Newton and are waiting on his decision before accepting Joseph's commitment?
