All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

I think it's more than just "playing time".

Again... "flashy".

Great player, though.

BTW, I think you hit the nail on the head with this one, GW, good article:

"First, regardless of who Richard Pitino brings in for 2014 we think his confidence and approach to recruiting thus far at Minnesota is a great sign for the future. An exceptional incoming class of 2014 would certainly mean a boost to Minnesota basketball, but where things are at in years 4 and 5 is much more important to the program and brand than what happens in year 1. Excitement is good, but patience is a virtue. Recruiting is an every day battle and that won’t ever change.

If Minnesota doesn’t bring in a stellar 2014 class, it’s not the end of the world.

If the Gophers land a couple of exceptionally well regarded recruits, the program hasn’t suddenly achieved elite status."

There was a Carolina-Duke documentary on ESPN tonight, and I was reminded that Coach K almost got fired after his first 2 years at Duke. They were awful, and a lot of the boosters wanted him out, but he got the time to implement his system, recruit to his system, and let the players mature and improve, and boom.

Ryan James just posted that we are recruiting Lourawls Nairn. He's a 4 star PG out of Kansas. Here are his recruiting pages and Twitter, if you'd be so kind as to follow. I kinda dig his twitter handle for some reason. tumtum_toofast...is that a reference to Three Ninjas?

I posted that we were going after him hard and he had interest in us 2 days ago on this thread. Where have you been my friend?

About your question, he goes by the name Tum Tum instead of Lourawls, and too fast just fits the creative twitter handle; he is a super quick PG!

Oh man. Sorry about this! I'll change my post, and thanks for the information!

No problem at all! I appreciate the links to his profiles that you added, you didn't have to edit your comment. Sounds like things have picked up at a rapid rate with him regarding Minnesota! And to think he's like Plan E or something at PG? Crazy.

What happens if we land Tyus, Perkins, Newton, and Joseph. Can we run a five guard offense including Andre? This seems like a great problem to have. Lil Rick and staff have been great on the recruiting trail so far.

Take them all, you can always trade them later. /KAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHN!

Gophers target Kaleb Joseph on Pitino: "He seems like a man of his word, and I really respect that"

What have the Gophers talked to you about when they reach out to you? Just the freedom I’d have at the point guard position and just being able to step in from day one and have an impact from day one in that system.

What do you like about new coach Richard Pitino? Coach Pitino and I, we talk all the time. I like that he’s the one that’s actively recruiting me, to me that says a lot. It shows that I’m a priority. And I see him at the games, so I know he means the things he says. He seems like a man of his word, and I really respect that.

Go Gophers!!

Yeah, SU is the most likely destination for Joseph. If another PG commits to SU before him, I think we're in good shape, but as of now I think that he's the most likely PG for their 2014 class. I just hope that other PG isn't Newton!

@ebosshoops: "Four-star guard Sandy Cohen is off the board. He just informed me that he has committed to #Marquette"

Best of luck to Sandy. Kind of what we suspected all along, and a tiny bit dissapointing, but as people have pointed out, plenty will fall of the board, and hopefully a select few will climb on board! Nothing to panic about.

I wish him luck and he's certainly going to a very good program. I have to admit I was very neutral about him.

+1

I'm not sure if I'm disappointed by this news or not. Kind of depends on who we end up getting, I suppose. I got the sense Marquette was on the fence for a while about whether to take him.

CBS: Vegas Notebook: Kaleb Joseph a prime target for many schools

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim was there with an assistant, Providence was in attendance, Minnesota stopped through, Maryland made its presence known, Connecticut had an assistant. With that combination of coaches and programs, it could only mean one thing: Kaleb Joseph was playing.

The 6-foot-2 point guard from Cushing Academy (Mass.) has been a prime target for many schools all summer, with coaches following his every move.

"It just shows me I'm a priority for them," Joseph said. "It shows that there's a need for me in their system. It makes the whole recruiting process a little bit more intriguing."

Joseph rattled off a list of Boston College, Maryland, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Syracuse and Marquette. He's taken only local visits so far, tripping to Boston College, Providence and Connecticut.

Go Gophers!!

@davetelep: Kevin Ollie joins the Whitehead party as UConn arrives full staff for Whitehead. Statement.

Go Gophers!!

I'm going to say it: SCREW UCLA!
Stop targeting all our recruits, especially when you are always one of the last schools to offer. Especially our in-staters. Rashad, Reid, Perkins, Newton, Whitehead, etc...
We kicked UCLA's a$$ last year in the tournament, and it would only be our pleasure if we could do it to them again in recruiting! (Me being angry towards UCLA)

I disliked Alford's existence at Indiana and I dislike it now!

Bummer that we didn't make the final cut for Kaleb Joseph but you would have to think that would help our chances with Ja'Quan Newton. Plenty of other options like Alex Robinson and LouRaws "Tum Tum" Nairn. I'm still optimistic.

Nairn seems to be diggin us a bit. He retweeted and favorited Ryan James' post that Pitino was watching him. Plus, he only has ~600 followers. We should blow him up. In the top 60 players left, and seems like a legit guy.

It's so hard to know whether to be disappointed by the Kaleb Joseph decision or not. On one hand it would seem like we'd have a great shot against WVU and Providence (if not Syracuse), but on the other I have no idea where the staff had him ranked in regards to other point guards on their list. Is it (Tyus), Perkins, Newton, Joseph, Nairn, Robinson, Magee, Mason? Is it (Tyus), Newton, Perkins, Robinson, Nairn, Mason, Joseph? I have no idea other than Tyus is likely the unattainable no.1 choice who might not even be the best fit for Coach Pitino's desired style of play. Outside of landing Tyus, I'd be very happy to see Newton, Nairn, or Ro binson end up a Gopher. I haven't read/seen enough of Magee to have an opinion and would be a bit concerned with Mason as our PG recruit, but would like to have him in combination with Newton/Nairn/Robinson.

It means next to nothing, but after watching this video I really wanted to see Kaleb in Maroon and Gold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDWneq1t6eI

Whenever a top recruit doesn't keep your school in contention, or commit to your school, it's dissapointing. I continue to stay positive, and it seems things are going in the right direction, but fingers crossed that this isn't the start of a recruiting collapse for 2014. Like I said, we have reason to still be very positive.

Apologies if this was asked before.

Does Pitino have a safety net if all of these top recruits he's after sign elsewhere.
