All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Apologies if this was asked before.

Does Pitino have a safety net if all of these top recruits he's after sign elsewhere.

Nobody is signed yet, so there is that. But what is your definition of a safety net? 3 star players? Some people on this board would consider those players to be an absolute failure by Pitino(purely from me reading other people's posts as I don't post much or know much, I just like to stay up to date on gopher gossip).

I think that's a very good question and the answer is probably. I'm guessing we sign Macura and Travis. No idea on the other two. He has at least 25 offers out there and I would guess it doesn't slow down. Pretty sure he will sign 1 or 2 we haven't heard of yet. Next year I believe he will be able to focus on a much smaller number.

Whenever a top recruit doesn't keep your school in contention, or commit to your school, it's dissapointing. I continue to stay positive, and it seems things are going in the right direction, but fingers crossed that this isn't the start of a recruiting collapse for 2014. Like I said, we have reason to still be very positive.

We were never in the driver's seat with Joesph.

Always felt pretty strongly that Joseph would end up with Syracuse and still think he will. I think this may actually end up being beneficial to us if Newton and Whitehead decide on the package deal because I think Syracuse is one of the top options for Whitehead.

Does Colson represent the next tier of recruit that we will start to see pop up now that our real wish list seems to have already been established (which may or may not go our way)? Would he be considered almost a safety net, per a recent poster. Or would he still be considered on par with some of the other high level talent that we have offered? I haven't seen him play.

I watched him against Pulley-- not very tall but pretty effective and efficient offensively. But Pulley doesn't have much for size other than Travis either, so there wasn't any secondary defensive help coming. He isn't quite the stretch 4 that will really succeed in Pitino's system, but he has big 10 beef.

Crazy that he's only 6'5 (Rivals) to 6'6 (every where else). After some quick research seems like his height may be what is keeping his recruiting ratings down, though ESPN dos have him as a 4 star. Has some decent offers too... FSU, Pitt, Iowa State, Notre Dame, Seton Hall among others.

Obviously Colson's height for the position he projects at isn't there, but he's got a very nice wingspan and is a solid rebounder. He's one of those guys that just finds a way to get it done on the court.

Not a guy who is going to stretch the defense, but the kid is a winner. Probably 6'5", but 6'11" on the wingspan. Can block shots with the crazy arm length.

Heres an article on him, travis and tyus.....like i mentioned before hes not the tallest and struggled trying to contain travis down low, but with pitino's system he seems like he would be a legit 4...the announcers kept bragging about how hard he worked and how skilled he was..... http://basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1528555

Colson does have a somewhat decent offer list. He does seem to be a considerable step down from what Pitino has recently been chasing after. Have to think he is a back up plan.

Why take things outta context my man? I mean, we certainly aren't in the drivers seat (drivers seat means the known favorite) for Vaughn, Travis, Larrier, Perkins, Robinson, Whitehead, etc, but I expect 1-2 of those guys to be Gophers, if not, I'd be a little surprised. It isn't surprising either if these guys go elsewhere, but it still counts as a bit of a recruiting tumble.

I personally think we are/have been in the drivers seat for Newton, Tum Tum, and Macura. How many of those guys come here though? 1-2 I'd expect. Probably 1.

As for Bonzie, a 6-5 Power Forward, very skilled, athletic, and powerful. It's hinted by Paul Biancardi that he will be in the ESPN100 next time ESPN updates their 2014 rankings. Trevor was 6-7, so I'm not really worried about Colson's height. Especially if he can add an inch or two in the next 18 months. I guarantee Pitino's offer came after the Pulley game in the Super Showcase last week.
*I think Bonzie's primary interest may lie somewhere other than Minnesota and we may be a little late to the party, but who knows.

A downside if we end up signing this kid is that Sid will think we signed Arthur Fonzarelli.

Bonzie

watched him play vs Howard Pulley and was impressed, may not be the biggest guy but was athletic, good rebounder and offensively was skilled.

As of yesterday he has Kaleb Joseph and Isaiah Whitehead to Syracuse. :(

But if his latest predictions come true, we'd end up with a class of Newton, Macura, Vaughn, and Travis for 2014. Couldn't be disappointed with a class like that.

The guy only has two picks correct out of that whole list of football and basketball players where he picked the right school more than a day in advance. While the 77% might look impressive, it looks like he just changes his pick right before the announcement once he's heard from another source.

That Crystall Ball feature on 247 is just stupid. Most of the "prognosticators" are simply following one or two major writers, like Jerry Meyer. When someone like Meyer changes his pick (often based on little more than a twitter message, like for Newton and Whitehead in June), then everyone else follows suit. And yeah, who cares if you made the "right pick" when you've said one guy for 2 months and then change your pick the day before he decides?

I really wish they would just drop that feature. It's dumb and very misleading.

I agree it's dumb, but most stuff on websites is. "top 10 this", "top 50 that".. it's all nonsense; mindless drivel meant to get clicks. It helps the masses with topic starters, but there's usually little insight or worthwhile analysis.
