All Things 2014 Basketball Recruiting Thread

Pitt, UCLA, and Nova are going to be tough to compete with. Newton is tight with some of the guys at Pitt, and his dad is in love with UCLA. Gonna be tough to land Newton with those guys in the picture.

Right, but what the Dude is saying is that Newton has said he'll cut his list to 5 next week, and with Pitt just offering now it might be too late. If he decides he wants to stay home I think Nova is much more likely. He seems to really like them and has a good relationship with their staff. Bottom line, when you recruit such highly regarded players, none of them are going to be easy to get.

No question...although it was interesting to see that even Northwestern can land a 4 star, top 100 recruit. Hoping to see us land somebody soon too.

I am unsure of what you don't understand...

Newton's tweet:
“@J_Newton20: Cuttin My College List 2 a Top 5 Next week!!!!! #Staytuned”

My point: Newton said he is going to cut his list next week to a top 5 so why did it take this long for a university located in the same state as Newton (approximately four and a half to five hours away) to extend an offer? Wouldn't you think, a recruit who plans to cut his list to 5 next week, already had some sort of idea which 5 he planned on picking (based mostly on schools that had already offered)? Now, Pitt may still make his final 5, but I just feel like it was a pretty late offer, considering how good he is and the proximity of him to the school.

Again, please clarify what you do not understand about that, please!

Relax, Dude. You're being very unDude.

I think jaymil was actually agreeing with you there on Pitt being late to the game. But, just because Pitt hadn't offered until this late doesn't mean that the team and him were not talking consistently through that period about an offer coming through and Newton planning around that. Who knows why it took them a while to offer? I'm sure they had a great excuse for Newton, who in all likelihood had the same question

Are you talking to me? Not sure why you quoted my post. I basically said the same thing you did.

The argument against our thought is that maybe Newton was in constant contact with Pitt and likes them and was waiting for the official offer before cutting his list so he could include them. Kind of the same as what KSB just said.

Trying to glean logical conclusions from tweets and comments from kids usually won't get you far.

Sorry! I meant to quote Winasota Gopher. I looked at his response on your post!

And yeah, I agree with what you guys are saying about Pitt. I just think it's strange they didn't offer sooner.

I feel like Pitt is pretty late to offer (not necessarily UCLA b/c Newton has shown interest) considering Newton has said he plans to cut his list to 5 within the next week or two. Especially considering how close Newton has been to Pitt the whole time.

Lets just say your 2nd Post is much more clear than your first.

I'll say this: Even though Indiana just offered, and even if it came late, if I'm Newton, I'm still going to put IU at the top of my list right away just because of the name. They should be taken seriously. Now Pitt won't have that credibility.

Wait, Indiana just offered Newton? I'm not sure I've seen this anywhere.

Ryan James latest podcast on talk Gopher buckets, talk about Amir Coffey, Maui Invitational, but... I'd recommend the last 5-6 minutes to everyone for very interesting stuff on 2014 Recruiting.

*Sounds like rivals #61 player in 2014 Lourawls Nairn and Minnesota are very quickly gaining mutual interest in each other. Keep an eye on this guy.

Yeah he looks incredibly polished for a high school PG. He has a really good hesitation dribble. Wouldn't mind seeing this guy end up a Gopher, could easily see him being a 4 year starter at PG.

Wow, he's really quick and really strong! Would be tough to beat out Kansas.

It'll be tough to beat Kansas. However, this is why they have 20 plus offers out. The other side of the recruiting coin is that once teams like Kansas and other great programs nail down recruits- some of the options for these guys narrow and we will be there when that happens. If we are second or third choice of enough guys - we will get ours.

1) Let's not get ahead of ourselves anointing any potential recruit a "four year starter," especially at PG. We will have two senior PGs on the roster next year.

2) We won't "beat" Kansas for a KC/St. Louis area prospect, but we probably won't have to. Nairns may have a Kansas "offer" but he isn't Kansas' #1 point guard target. Probably a Plan C or D for them.

Love his first name. I bet he has a tremendous voice.

I said I COULD SEE him being a 4 year starter at PG. Never anointed anyone. Matheiu has yet to play and Dre would be a better SG than PG. Hence, I could see this kid starting as a freshman.

Doesn't have a Kansas offer right now, Kansas State offered, but Weber isn't a great recruiter.

Good news! I think we have a decent shot if Kentucky doesn't offer.

I think it's be a 3-way race between UCLA, Gonzaga, and us. And who knows how something like that could play out. Funky stuff happens with players committing, all of these schools have a legit shot at him!

After reading that article I would agree. The reason I would agree is because his father (helicopter parent) made it seem like all that matters is his playing time right away (typical). He wont get that at Kentucky or Uconn. Kentucky will be LOADED as usual and Uconn will have an incredible lineup as well with guys like Purvis, Hamilton, Boatright, Daniels, & Calhoun. UCLA doesn't have any commits from 2014 year and their 2013 commits were nothing special. So it is b/w those 3 if Perkins (father) is really that concerned with his sons playing time right away.

I think it's more than just "playing time".

Again... "flashy".

Great player, though.

I like your reasoning, and sure, maybe that takes out UCONN and I personally don't believe UK will offer. It seems like UCLA, Gonzaga, and Minnesota are in the mix for his services.
